Day 8: What do you do?

Course › Week 2: Everyday actions

Day 8 of 90 · about 60 minutes

By the end of today you can:

  • Use any regular -ar verb in the present: falo, fala, falamos, falam
  • Say where you live and work, what you study and which languages you speak
  • Say "we" the way Brazilians do, with a gente
  • Say how much or how well: um pouco, muito, bem

It's Monday, the start of Emma's first full week at the agency. She and Lucas are having a coffee in the office kitchen when Carol walks in.

Warm-up: do you remember?

Before anything new, pull these out of memory. They come from earlier days, some from yesterday and some from weeks ago. Getting one wrong is useful: it shows you what to look at again.

Listen and read

Listen once without reading. Every time you hear a word ending in -o right after eu, that's someone talking about what they do.

Lucas Emma, você fala português muito bem! Emma, you speak Portuguese very well!

Emma Obrigada! Eu falo só um pouco. Eu estudo em casa. Thank you! I only speak a little. I study at home.

Lucas Eu falo inglês, mas não muito bem. Aqui na agência a gente fala português e inglês. I speak English, but not very well. Here at the agency we speak Portuguese and English.

Emma Que bom! Onde você mora, Lucas? That’s good! Where do you live, Lucas?

Lucas Eu moro no centro, com dois amigos. E você? I live downtown, with two friends. And you?

Emma Eu moro em um apartamento pequeno, aqui no bairro. I live in a small apartment, here in the neighborhood.

Lucas Que legal! E no Canadá, você trabalha muito? How cool! And in Canada, do you work a lot?

Emma Trabalho. Em Toronto eu trabalho com uma equipe grande. I do. In Toronto I work with a big team.

Lucas Aqui nós trabalhamos muito, mas a gente toma muito café! Here we work a lot, but we drink a lot of coffee!

Carol Vocês falam muito, né? E o trabalho? You two talk a lot, don’t you? And the work?

Lucas Desculpa, chefe! Sorry, boss!

Did you understand?

  1. How much Portuguese does Emma say she speaks?None at all. A lot. Only a little.
  2. Which languages do they speak at the agency?English and French Portuguese and English Only Portuguese
  3. Where does Lucas live?Downtown, with two friends. In Toronto. In a small apartment, alone.
  4. What does Carol think Lucas and Emma do a lot?Talk Work Study

Verbs that end in -ar

In a dictionary, a Portuguese verb ends in -ar, -er or -ir: falar (to speak), morar (to live). That form is called the infinitive, and it's the "to …" form in English. Most verbs end in -ar, and almost all of them follow the same pattern, so today's four endings unlock hundreds of verbs.

Take off the -ar and add an ending that shows who is doing it: -o for eu, -a for você, ele and ela, -amos for nós, and -am for vocês, eles and elas.

Portuguese Sounds like English
eu falo EH-oo FAH-loo I speak
você fala voh-SAY FAH-lah you speak
ele fala / ela fala AY-lee FAH-lah / EH-lah FAH-lah he speaks / she speaks
nós falamos naws fah-LAH-moos we speak
vocês falam voh-SAYS FAH-lowng you (all) speak
eles falam / elas falam AY-lees FAH-lowng / EH-lahs FAH-lowng they speak
  • Eu falo inglês. I speak English.
  • A Emma fala português. Emma speaks Portuguese.
  • Nós falamos muito. We talk a lot.
  • Eles falam espanhol. They speak Spanish.

Just as with ser, ter and estar, the form for você is the same as the form for ele and ela, and the form for vocês is the same as for eles and elas. So there are only four forms to learn.

Where's "do"? English needs "do" and "does" for questions and for "not": Do you speak…? I don't speak… Portuguese doesn't. A question is the statement with your voice going up, and "not" is não before the verb, exactly as you learned with ser.

  • Você fala inglês? Do you speak English?
  • Eu não falo espanhol. I don't speak Spanish.

And to say yes, repeat the verb: Você trabalha muito? — Trabalho.

Listen for the stress. In falo, fala and falam the loud syllable is FA. Only falamos moves it: fa-LA-mos. The ending -am is a quick, soft nasal "owng", never "am" as in English: falam, moram, trabalham.

Five verbs for everyday life

These five all work exactly like falar.

Portuguese Sounds like English
falar fah-LAR to speak, to talk
morar moh-RAR to live (in a place)
trabalhar trah-bah-LYAR to work
estudar ees-too-DAR to study
tomar café toh-MAR kah-FEH to drink coffee, to have coffee
falar morar trabalhar estudar
eu falo moro trabalho estudo
você, ele, ela fala mora trabalha estuda
nós falamos moramos trabalhamos estudamos
vocês, eles, elas falam moram trabalham estudam
  • Eu moro em São Paulo. I live in São Paulo.
  • A Carol trabalha muito. Carol works a lot.
  • Vocês estudam português? Do you (all) study Portuguese?
  • Eles tomam café na agência. They have coffee at the agency.

You met o trabalho (work, the job) on day 1. Eu trabalho (I work) is the same word doing a different job, just as "work" does in English.

A gente: the everyday "we"

Nós means "we", but in conversation Brazilians say a gente far more often. It means exactly the same thing. The catch: a gente takes the ele/ela form of the verb, not the nós form.

Portuguese Sounds like English
nós falamos naws fah-LAH-moos we speak
a gente fala ah ZHEN-tchee FAH-lah we speak
nós moramos naws moh-RAH-moos we live
a gente mora ah ZHEN-tchee MAW-rah we live
  • A gente trabalha em uma agência. We work at an agency.
  • A gente não fala francês. We don't speak French.
  • A gente é do Canadá. We're from Canada.
  • A gente tem um carro. We have a car.

Don't mix the two. A gente falamos is a mistake that Brazilians notice. Choose one: nós falamos or a gente fala. Both are correct. Nós is a little more formal and is normal in writing; a gente is what you'll hear all day. From today this course uses both, so you get used to them.

Where, with whom, how well

Languages come straight after falar and are written without a capital letter.

Portuguese Sounds like English
português por-too-GAYS Portuguese
inglês een-GLAYS English
espanhol ees-pah-NYAW-oo Spanish
francês frahn-SAYS French

Morar em is "to live in" and trabalhar em is "to work in" or "at". Remember from day 5 that em joins up with "the": no, na, nos, nas. Most cities take plain em.

  • Eu moro em Toronto. I live in Toronto.
  • Ela mora no Brasil. She lives in Brazil.
  • O Lucas trabalha na agência. Lucas works at the agency.
  • Eu trabalho em casa. I work at home.

Trabalhar com and morar com say who you work or live with: Eu trabalho com a Carol. Ele mora com dois amigos.

The first four of these little words tell you how much or how well, and they go after the verb:

Portuguese Sounds like English
um pouco oong POH-koo a little
muito MWEEN-too a lot; very
bem bayng well
muito bem MWEEN-too bayng very well
só saw only, just
aqui ah-KEE here
em casa ayng KAH-zah at home
com kohng with
  • Eu falo um pouco de português. I speak a little Portuguese.
  • Ela trabalha muito. She works a lot.
  • Você fala inglês muito bem. You speak English very well.
  • Eu não falo espanhol muito bem. I don't speak Spanish very well.

Morar is not "to be alive". Morar is only for where your home is: Eu moro em São Paulo. The verb for living in the sense of being alive or living your life is viver, which comes later.
