Emma Bom dia, Seu Zé! Tudo bem, e o senhor? Good morning, Seu Zé! All good, and you?

Seu Zé Tudo ótimo. Onde é que você trabalha? Everything’s great. Where do you work?

Emma Eu trabalho em uma agência de design. I work at a design agency.

Seu Zé Que legal! E com quem você trabalha? How cool! And who do you work with?

Emma Com o Lucas e a Carol. Eles são muito legais. With Lucas and Carol. They’re very nice.

Seu Zé E por que você estuda português? And why do you study Portuguese?

Emma Porque eu moro e trabalho aqui, né? Because I live and work here, right?

Seu Zé Você fala francês também? Do you speak French too?

Emma Falo, mas só um pouco. E o senhor, fala inglês ou espanhol? I do, but only a little. And you, do you speak English or Spanish?

Seu Zé Não falo, não. Só português! No, I don’t. Only Portuguese!

Emma Seu Zé, onde fica a padaria? Seu Zé, where’s the bakery?

O senhor. Remember from day 6: to an older person Emma doesn't say você. She says o senhor to Seu Zé, just as she says a senhora to Dona Marta. The verb is the same as with você: o senhor fala, a senhora fala.

The question words

Portuguese Sounds like English
o que oo kee what
quem kayng who
onde OHN-djee where
quando KWAHN-doo when
como KOH-moo how
por que poor KAY why
qual / quais kwow / kwice which, what (one / more than one)
quanto / quanta KWAHN-too / KWAHN-tah how much
quantos / quantas KWAHN-toos / KWAHN-tahs how many

The question word goes first. After it, the sentence stays in its normal order: the person, then the verb. There's no "do" and nothing is turned around.

  • O que você estuda? What do you study?
  • Quem mora aqui? Who lives here?
  • Onde vocês trabalham? Where do you (all) work?
  • Quando você estuda? When do you study?
  • Como você está? How are you?
  • Por que ela mora no Brasil? Why does she live in Brazil?
  • Quantas línguas você fala? How many languages do you speak?

Three things to know:

  • A little word like de or com goes in front of the question word, never at the end as in English: De onde você é? (Where are you from?), Com quem você mora? (Who do you live with?).
  • Qual is "which", and it's also the "what" you use before é when you're asking for one piece of information: Qual é o seu nome?, Qual é o seu telefone? (What's your phone number?) Use o que when you want an explanation or the name of a thing: O que é isso? For more than one, qual becomes quais: Quais línguas você fala?
  • Quanto changes to match the thing you're counting, like quantos anos on day 4: Quantos amigos você tem?, Quantas pessoas trabalham aqui?

Por que and porque. The question "why" is two words, por que. The answer "because" is one word, porque. They sound the same.

  • Por que você estuda português? Why do you study Portuguese?
  • Porque eu moro no Brasil. Because I live in Brazil.

É que and né?

In conversation, Brazilians very often slip é que in after the question word. It adds no meaning; it only makes the question flow. The two versions mean exactly the same thing.

Portuguese Sounds like English
Onde você mora? OHN-djee voh-SAY MAW-rah Where do you live?
Onde é que você mora? OHN-djee eh kee voh-SAY MAW-rah Where do you live?
O que você estuda? oo kee voh-SAY ees-TOO-dah What do you study?
O que é que você estuda? oo kee eh kee voh-SAY ees-TOO-dah What do you study?

You don't have to say é que yourself, but you need to recognize it, because you'll hear it all day.

Né? at the end of a sentence means "right?", "isn't it?", "don't you?". It's short for não é? and it's the same for every person and every verb.

  • Você é canadense, né? You're Canadian, aren't you?
  • Eles moram aqui, né? They live here, don't they?

Yes and no

You've seen that Brazilians answer "yes" by repeating the verb. Now you can do that with any verb. Use the form for the person who is answering.

Portuguese Sounds like English
Você fala inglês? voh-SAY FAH-lah een-GLAYS Do you speak English?
Falo. / Falo, sim. FAH-loo / FAH-loo seeng Yes, I do.
Não falo. / Não, não falo. nowng FAH-loo No, I don't.
Vocês moram aqui? voh-SAYS MAW-rowng ah-KEE Do you (all) live here?
Moramos. moh-RAH-moos Yes, we do.
Não moramos. nowng moh-RAH-moos No, we don't.

A plain Sim is understood, but it can sound a little stiff. And you'll often hear a second não at the end, as Seu Zé says it: Não falo, não.

Também, mas, ou

Portuguese Sounds like English
também tahm-BAYNG also, too
mas mahs but
ou oh or
a língua ah LEEN-gwah the language
a pessoa ah peh-SOH-ah the person
a padaria ah pah-dah-REE-ah the bakery
a esquina ah ees-KEE-nah the street corner
  • Eu falo inglês e também falo francês. I speak English and I also speak French.
  • Ela trabalha muito, mas está feliz. She works a lot, but she's happy.
  • Você mora aqui ou no centro? Do you live here or downtown?

Também usually goes before the verb or at the end of the sentence: Eu também moro aqui. or Eu moro aqui também. On its own, Eu também! is "Me too!"

Mas or mais? Mas is "but". Mais, with an i, is "more", as in mais ou menos. In much of Brazil the two sound almost the same, so check the spelling when you write.
