Listen and read

Listen for two things: tinha, tivesse or teria followed by a word in -ado or -ido, and the reproaches that start with devia ter and podia ter.

I can’t believe it! The nine o’clock boat had already left when we got here.

If we had left the house earlier, we would have gotten here on time.

Lucas Desculpa, gente. Eu devia ter colocado o despertador. Sorry, guys. I should have set the alarm.

You could have told us you were still asleep!

Lucas Eu sei. I know. If I had gone to sleep earlier last night, I wouldn’t have woken up so late.

And I should have bought the tickets yesterday, online. It’s not only your fault.

Emma Tá bom, tá bom. E agora? Tem outro barco? OK, OK. What now? Is there another boat?

Rafa Tem um às onze. Ainda bem que hoje é segunda. No domingo só tem um barco. There’s one at eleven. Good thing today is Monday. On Sunday there’s only one boat.

Lucas Ainda bem! Thank goodness! I wish I’d had breakfast on the island, but that’s OK.

Too bad we lost two hours of beach.

Rafa Vocês têm sorte, porque eu conheço um café ótimo aqui perto. Estão com fome? You’re lucky, because I know a great café near here. Are you hungry?

Lucas Eu estou com muita fome. E com sono. I’m very hungry. And sleepy.

If you had woken up on time, you would have had breakfast at home!

Lucas Você tem razão. Hoje o café é por minha conta. You’re right. Today breakfast is on me.

Você entendeu? (Did you understand?)

Porque o Rafa perdeu as passagens.
  3. A que horas sai o outro barco?Às onze. Ao meio-dia. Às nove.
  4. Quem vai pagar o café?A Emma. O Lucas. O Rafa.

Had done: one step further back

You met tinha + participle on day 53. It's the "had done" of English: something that was already finished before another moment in the past.

The boat had already left when we got there.
  • Eu nunca tinha visto um mar tão azul. I had never seen such a blue sea.
  • A Emma estava cansada porque tinha dormido pouco. Emma was tired because she hadn't slept much.

Everything in today's lesson is built on the participle, so here it is again. Regular verbs take -ado (-ar verbs) or -ido (-er and -ir verbs): falado, comido, saído. These are the irregular ones. After ter, the participle never changes its ending.

Verb Portuguese English
fazer feito done, made
dizer dito said
ver visto seen
vir vindo come
pôr posto put
escrever escrito written
abrir aberto opened
pagar pago paid
ganhar ganho won, earned
gastar gasto spent

If I had known…

Yesterday's "if" imagined a different present: Se eu tivesse tempo, viajaria. Today's imagines a different past, and that past can't be changed any more. Both halves get a helper verb plus the participle:

se + tivesse + participle, then teria + participle

if… had would have
If we had left earlier, we would have arrived on time.
  • Se eu tivesse sabido, teria ido. If I had known, I would have gone.
  • Se você tivesse me ligado, eu teria esperado. If you had called me, I would have waited.
If it hadn't rained, we would have stayed at the beach.

You now have all three kinds of "if". Compare them:

Portuguese English
Se eu tiver tempo, eu vou. If I have time, I'll go. (it may happen)
Se eu tivesse tempo, eu iria. If I had time, I'd go. (imagining: I don't have time)
Se eu tivesse tido tempo, eu teria ido. If I had had time, I would have gone. (too late now)

What you'll hear. In conversation, tinha often takes the place of teria, in the same way as the imperfect replaced the conditional yesterday: Se eu tivesse sabido, tinha ido. And with saber, many people keep the short form in the first half: Se eu soubesse, teria ido. Both are normal. The exercises accept them.

Should have, could have, wish I had

For regrets and reproaches, put ter + participle after devia, podia or queria. The ter stays in the infinitive.

Portuguese English
Eu devia ter ligado. I should have called.
Você podia ter avisado. You could have let me know.
Eu queria ter ido. I wish I had gone. (I wanted to go and didn't)
Eu não devia ter dito isso. I shouldn't have said that.
  • Eu devia ter colocado o despertador. I should have set the alarm.
  • Você podia ter me ligado! You could have called me!
  • Eu queria ter conhecido o seu avô. I wish I had met your grandfather.

In careful or formal Portuguese you'll see the conditional forms: deveria ter, poderia ter, gostaria de ter. They mean the same.

Watch the order. English says "should have called", and so does Portuguese: devia ter ligado. The object pronoun goes between ter and the participle in Brazilian speech: Você podia ter me avisado.

Ainda bem que, pena que

Two short phrases for reacting to how things turned out.

Ainda bem que is "good thing" or "thank goodness". It's followed by a plain verb, with no subjunctive, because you're stating a fact you're happy about.

  • Ainda bem que você veio! Good thing you came!
  • Ainda bem que tem outro barco. Thank goodness there's another boat.

Pena que (or que pena que) is "too bad". On day 58 you learned it with the present subjunctive for things happening now: Que pena que você não possa vir. When Brazilians talk about something that already happened, in conversation they normally use the simple past after it:

  • Pena que choveu. Too bad it rained.
  • Pena que a gente perdeu o barco. Too bad we missed the boat.

Ter and estar in everyday expressions

English uses "to be" for most of these. Portuguese uses ter for the first group, and estar com or estar de for passing states.

Portuguese English
ter sorte to be lucky
ter azar to be unlucky
ter razão to be right
ter certeza to be sure
ter cuidado to be careful
ter culpa to be to blame
ter coragem de to have the courage to
ter vontade de to feel like (doing something)
estar com pressa to be in a hurry
estar com sono to be sleepy
estar com saudade de to miss
estar de bom humor to be in a good mood
estar de mau humor to be in a bad mood
  • Você tem razão. You're right.
  • A gente teve sorte com o tempo. We were lucky with the weather.
  • Desculpa, estou com pressa. Sorry, I'm in a hurry.
  • Ninguém teve culpa. It was nobody's fault.
