Listen and read
Everything in this conversation is imagined, until almost the end. Listen for the pairs: a verb in -sse in the se half, and a verb in -ria in the other half.
Emma Que lugar lindo! What a beautiful place! If I lived here, I’d come to the beach every day.
Rafa Se você morasse aqui, não trabalharia nunca! If you lived here, you’d never work!
If I won the lottery, I’d buy a house right there, facing the sea.
What if we opened a restaurant here? I’d cook and you’d play guitar.
Lucas E quem pagaria as contas? And who’d pay the bills? We’d spend everything in a month.
Emma Posso perguntar uma coisa? E se eu ficasse no Brasil? Can I ask something? What if I stayed in Brazil?
Lucas Como assim? Depois dos três meses? What do you mean? After the three months?
Yeah. If I had a job here, I’d stay. But it’s not that easy.
Why not? If I were you, I’d talk to Carol.
I’d need a visa, a bank account, a salary in reais…
You talk as if it were impossible. If you want to stay, we’ll help you.
Emma Obrigada. Thank you. But if I stayed, I’d miss my family a lot.
If your family comes to visit you, I’ll make them a moqueca.
Then they’ll never want to go back to Canada!
Você entendeu? (Did you understand?)
Dos colegas do escritório.

Two kinds of "if"
Portuguese makes you choose between two kinds of "if", and you now have the forms for both.
A real possibility. It may well happen. Use se + future subjunctive (day 64), and the present or vou + infinitive in the other half.
An imagined situation. It isn't true now, or you think it's unlikely. Use se + past subjunctive (day 65), and the conditional (day 52) in the other half.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Se chover, eu fico em casa. | If it rains, I'll stay home. (it may rain) |
| Se chovesse, eu ficaria em casa. | If it rained, I'd stay home. (but look at that sun) |
| Se eu tiver tempo, eu te ajudo. | If I have time, I'll help you. (I may have time) |
| Se eu tivesse tempo, eu te ajudaria. | If I had time, I'd help you. (but I don't) |
| Se a Emma ficar no Brasil, o Lucas vai ficar feliz. | If Emma stays in Brazil, Lucas will be happy. (she may) |
| Se a Emma ficasse no Brasil, o Lucas ficaria feliz. | If Emma stayed in Brazil, Lucas would be happy. (only imagining) |
English does the same thing with its own tools: "if I have time, I will" against "if I had time, I would". The past form in "if I had" isn't about the past at all. It marks the situation as imagined, and so does the Portuguese past subjunctive.
A reminder of the conditional: add -ria, -ria, -ríamos, -riam to the whole infinitive.
| ficar | ir | fazer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | ficaria | iria | faria |
| você, ele, ela, a gente | ficaria | iria | faria |
| nós | ficaríamos | iríamos | faríamos |
| vocês, eles, elas | ficariam | iriam | fariam |
Only three verbs are irregular: faria (fazer), diria (dizer) and traria (trazer).
The two halves never share a form. In a condition, the conditional never comes right after se: Se eu teria tempo is wrong, in the same way as "if I would have time" in English. And the present subjunctive of week 9 never follows se either: not se eu tenha. After this kind of se it's tiver (it may happen) or tivesse (I'm imagining).
The order of the two halves is free: Eu ficaria se tivesse um emprego aqui. means the same as Se eu tivesse um emprego aqui, eu ficaria.
What people say out loud
On day 52 you saw that in conversation Brazilians often use the imperfect where the grammar book has the conditional. That's very common in these sentences.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Se eu tivesse dinheiro, viajaria mais. | If I had money, I'd travel more. (written, careful) |
| Se eu tivesse dinheiro, viajava mais. | If I had money, I'd travel more. (spoken) |
| Se eu pudesse, eu ia com você. | If I could, I'd go with you. (spoken) |
Ia + infinitive does the same job, as in Lucas's line A gente ia gastar tudo em um mês. We'd spend everything in a month.
Only the "would" half relaxes like this. The se half keeps its -sse form in speech too. In today's exercises, the conditional is the first answer and the imperfect is accepted as well.
Se eu fosse você, e se…?, como se
Three ready-made frames use the past subjunctive.
Se eu fosse você… is "If I were you…", the friendliest way to give advice. You can also say no seu lugar (day 52).
If I were you, I'd talk to Carol.
- Se eu fosse você, não gastaria tanto. If I were you, I wouldn't spend so much.
E se…? is "What if…?" With the past subjunctive, it's a suggestion or a daydream. With the future subjunctive, it's a real worry.
What if we went to the movies today? (a suggestion)
- E se eu ficasse no Brasil? What if I stayed in Brazil? (thinking out loud)
- E se chover? What if it rains? (it may)
Como se is "as if", and it always takes the past subjunctive, because what follows isn't really the case.
- Ele fala como se soubesse tudo. He talks as if he knew everything.
She treats me as if I were family.
- Você gasta como se fosse rico. You spend as if you were rich.
Money matters
If Emma stayed, she'd have to deal with all of this.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| o salário | the salary |
| ganhar | to earn; to win |
| ganhar na loteria | to win the lottery |
| gastar | to spend |
| economizar | to save (money) |
| a conta | the account; the bill |
| abrir uma conta | to open an account |
| a poupança | the savings account |
| pagar as contas | to pay the bills |
| o empréstimo | the loan |
| emprestar | to lend |
| investir | to invest |
| a dívida | the debt |
| rico / rica | rich |
- Quanto você ganha por mês? How much do you earn a month?
- Eu tento economizar um pouco todo mês. I try to save a little every month.
- Você pode me emprestar vinte reais? Can you lend me twenty reais?
