  • Choose between Quero ir (same person) and Quero que você… (two people)

Listen and read

Listen to the whole conversation first without reading. Every time Carol says quero que, listen to the verb that comes next: its ending isn't the one you'd expect.

Carol Emma, você tem um minuto? Preciso falar com você. Emma, do you have a minute? I need to talk to you.

Emma Claro, Carol. Aconteceu alguma coisa? Of course, Carol. Did something happen?

Carol A Renata, a dona do Café Serra, vem aqui na sexta. Eu quero que você faça a apresentação. Renata, the owner of Café Serra, is coming here on Friday. I want you to do the presentation.

Emma Eu? Em português? Me? In Portuguese?

In Portuguese. Renata doesn’t speak English, and the project is yours.

Emma Mas o meu português ainda não é perfeito… But my Portuguese isn’t perfect yet…

It doesn’t need to be perfect. I only want you to speak calmly and Renata to understand the ideas.

Emma Tá bom. O que você quer que eu mostre? OK. What do you want me to show?

Quero que você mostre as três e diga qual é a melhor. She wants us to bring three ideas for the new packaging. I want you to show all three and say which one is the best.

Would you rather Lucas helped me with the slides?

Carol Prefiro. Yes, I would. And I ask that you finish everything by Thursday, because I want to see the slides first.

Emma Combinado. Espero que a Renata goste. Deal. I hope Renata likes it.

I hope she signs the contract! And I hope you sleep well this week.

Emma Vou tentar! Obrigada pela confiança, Carol. I’ll try! Thank you for trusting me, Carol.

Facts and wishes: what the subjunctive is

Every verb form you've learned so far states something as a fact: Você fala português (you speak Portuguese), Ela chegou (she arrived), Eu morava lá (I used to live there). Grammar books call these forms the indicative.

Portuguese has a second set of forms, the subjunctive (o subjuntivo), for things that are not being stated as fact: things somebody wants, hopes, feels or doubts. It almost always comes after the word que.

  • Você fala português. You speak Portuguese. (a fact)
  • Eu quero que você fale português. I want you to speak Portuguese. (a wish: it may or may not happen)
  • A Renata assina o contrato. Renata signs the contract. (a fact)
  • Eu espero que a Renata assine o contrato. I hope Renata signs the contract. (a hope)

English still has a little of this: "I suggest that he be here early", "It's important that she go". In English it's rare and formal. In Portuguese it's everyday language: you can't order a coffee for a friend, wish someone luck or say "I hope you like it" without it.

Don't translate "I want you to…" word by word. English says I want you to speak. Portuguese can't say Eu quero você falar: that's wrong. It says "I want that you speak": Eu quero que você fale. This is the mistake English speakers make most, so say the pattern out loud a few times: quero que você…, quero que você…

This week is all about the present subjunctive. Take it one step at a time: today, how to build it and the first place to use it.

How to build it: start from eu

Three steps:

  1. Take the eu form of the present: falo, como, abro.
  2. Take off the -o.
  3. Add the "opposite" vowel: -e for -ar verbs, -a for -er and -ir verbs.
falar comer abrir
eu fale coma abra
Carol wants me to speak to Renata.
I hope you (all) eat well in Salvador.
  • Você quer que eu abra a janela? Do you want me to open the window?

Three things to notice:

  • The eu form and the você / ele / ela form are the same, so keep the pronoun or the name when it isn't clear who you mean: que eu fale, que ela fale.
  • A gente uses the você form, as always: Ela quer que a gente traga três ideias.
  • You already know these forms. They're the commands from day 50: Fale! Coma! Abra! A command is the subjunctive standing on its own.

Keeping the sound. The spelling changes you met in the past (cheguei, fiquei, comecei) happen here too, in every person, because the ending now starts with e: chegar → chegue, pagar → pague, ficar → fique, tocar → toque, começar → comece.

Why the eu form? It carries the irregularities

If a verb has an odd eu form in the present, the whole subjunctive copies it. That's the reason for starting from eu and not from the infinitive.

Verb eu (present) Portuguese English
ter tenho que eu tenha that I have
fazer faço que eu faça that I do, make
dizer digo que eu diga that I say
vir venho que eu venha that I come
ver vejo que eu veja that I see
pôr ponho que eu ponha that I put
poder posso que eu possa that I can
trazer trago que eu traga that I bring
ouvir ouço que eu ouça that I hear
dormir durmo que eu durma that I sleep
pedir peço que eu peça that I ask for
conhecer conheço que eu conheça that I know, meet

The other persons follow the same pattern as falar and comer: tenha, tenha, tenhamos, tenham; faça, faça, façamos, façam.

  • Eu quero que você venha à minha casa. I want you to come to my house.
  • Espero que vocês tenham um bom dia. I hope you (all) have a good day.
  • Ela quer que eu diga a verdade. She wants me to tell the truth.

Seven verbs don't follow the rule: ser, estar, ir, dar, saber, querer and haver. They're tomorrow's lesson. Today's sentences leave them out on purpose, so everything you meet today can be built with the three steps.

When to use it: wanting something from someone else

Today's four triggers all express a wish about what another person does. After them comes que and the subjunctive.

Portuguese English
Eu quero que você venha. I want you to come.
Eu espero que ela goste. I hope she likes it.
Eu prefiro que vocês fiquem. I'd rather you (all) stayed.
Eu peço que vocês cheguem cedo. I ask you (all) to arrive early.

The pattern never changes: person 1 + wish verb + que + person 2 + subjunctive.

The doctor wants Lucas to sleep more.
I don't want you to pay for dinner.
My parents hope I call every Sunday.
  • Você prefere que eu volte amanhã? Would you rather I came back tomorrow?

Pedir (to ask for, to request) is new as a full verb. Its eu form is irregular: eu peço, você pede, nós pedimos, eles pedem. Remember that preferir does the same thing: eu prefiro, so que eu prefira.

Why the subjunctive here? Because what comes after que isn't a fact. When Carol says Quero que você faça a apresentação, Emma hasn't done it yet, and she may never do it. Carol is describing what she wants the world to look like.

Same person? Use the infinitive

When the person who wants and the person who does are the same, there's no que and no subjunctive. You use the infinitive, exactly as you learned on day 22.

Portuguese English
Eu quero fazer a apresentação. I want to do the presentation.
Eu quero que você faça a apresentação. I want you to do the presentation.
Ela espera chegar cedo. She hopes to arrive early.
Ela espera que o Lucas chegue cedo. She hopes Lucas arrives early.
Eu prefiro ficar em casa. I'd rather stay home.
Eu prefiro que você fique em casa. I'd rather you stayed home.

Ask yourself one question: how many people are involved? One person → infinitive. Two people → que + subjunctive.

Words for the presentation

Portuguese English
a apresentação the presentation
o cliente, a cliente the client
o dono, a dona the owner
a embalagem the packaging
o contrato the contract
assinar to sign
a ideia the idea
a confiança trust, confidence
com calma calmly, without rushing
Combinado! Deal! Agreed!
