Listen and read

Listen for the feelings: fico feliz que, tenho medo que, que pena que, sinto muito que, é uma pena que, me preocupa que. What verb form comes after each one?

Dona Marta Entra, minha filha! Que bom que você veio! Fiz um bolo de fubá. Come in, my dear! How nice that you came! I made a cornmeal cake.

Emma Obrigada, Dona Marta. Thank you, Dona Marta. I’m glad you’re home. I needed to talk to someone.

Dona Marta O que foi? Você está com uma cara preocupada. What’s wrong? You look worried.

I have a presentation on Friday, in Portuguese. I’m afraid it’ll be a disaster and the client won’t understand a thing.

Dona Marta Imagina! Você já fala muito bem. Nonsense! You already speak very well.

And I’m afraid she’ll ask difficult questions and I won’t know how to answer.

Dona Marta Calma. Vai dar tudo certo. E a viagem para Salvador? É no sábado, não é? Relax. Everything will work out. And the trip to Salvador? It’s on Saturday, isn’t it?

Yes. I’m really excited! What a shame you’re not coming with us.

Oh, I’m sorry it’s not possible to go, but my sister arrives from Minas on Saturday.

Emma Fico feliz que ela venha visitar a senhora! I’m glad she’s coming to visit you!

Me too. It’s just a pity she’s staying such a short time. It’s only three days.

Emma A senhora conhece a Bahia? Do you know Bahia?

I do. I went with my husband many years ago. I’m glad you’re going to see Salvador.

Rafa has already made a huge list of places.

I’m only worried that you all want to do everything in four days! Take a piece of cake for the trip. And good luck on Friday!

The seven irregulars

Yesterday's rule (take the eu form, drop the -o, add the opposite vowel) works for every verb except these seven. Five of them have an eu form that doesn't end in -o (sou, estou, vou, dou, sei), so the rule has nothing to work with.

Verb Portuguese nós vocês, eles, elas English
ser que eu seja sejamos sejam that I am
estar que eu esteja estejamos estejam that I am
ir que eu vá vamos vão that I go
dar que eu dê demos deem that I give
saber que eu saiba saibamos saibam that I know
querer que eu queira queiramos queiram that I want
haver que haja that there is, that there are

As always, the você / ele / ela / a gente form is the same as the eu form: que ela seja, que você vá, que a gente saiba.

  • Espero que a apresentação seja um sucesso. I hope the presentation is a success.
  • Fico feliz que você esteja aqui. I'm glad you're here.
What a shame they're not going with us.
I want you to give this book to Lucas.
I'm afraid she doesn't know the way.
  • Me preocupa que ele não queira comer. It worries me that he doesn't want to eat.

Three shortcuts:

  • You met seja, esteja, vá and dê on day 50 as commands: Seja bem-vindo! Vá em frente! Me dê um minuto. Same forms.
  • For ir, the nós and vocês forms look exactly like the normal present: vamos, vão. Only vá is different.
  • Dê has an accent so it isn't confused with de ("of"). The plural deem has none.

Haja is the subjunctive of há ("there is / there are"), and you'll see it in writing: Espero que não haja problemas. In conversation, Brazilians use ter for "there is" (day 18), so they say tenha: Espero que não tenha fila. I hope there's no line.

Feelings bring the subjunctive

Yesterday the subjunctive came after wishes. Today's trigger is feelings. When a sentence starts with how you feel about something, the verb after que goes into the subjunctive.

Portuguese English
Fico feliz que… I'm glad that…
Sinto muito que… I'm sorry that…
Tenho medo (de) que… I'm afraid that…
É uma pena que… It's a pity that…
Me preocupa que… It worries me that…
Que bom que… How nice that…, I'm glad that…
Que pena que… What a shame that…
  • Fico feliz que vocês gostem do bolo. I'm glad you (all) like the cake.
  • Sinto muito que você esteja doente. I'm sorry you're sick.
  • Tenho medo que o Lucas chegue atrasado. I'm afraid Lucas will arrive late.
It's a pity she can't come.
  • Me preocupa que ele durma tão pouco. It worries me that he sleeps so little.

Here's the surprise: often the thing is a fact. Emma's friend really is sick; Lucas really does sleep too little. So why not the normal verb forms? Because the sentence isn't reporting the fact. It's reacting to it. The fact is in the background, and your feeling is the message. Compare:

  • Ela está em casa. She's at home. (you're telling me a fact)
  • Fico feliz que ela esteja em casa. I'm glad she's at home. (you're telling me how you feel)

English has no special form here, so you have to train your ear: feeling + que → subjunctive.

What people really say after que bom que and que pena que. With these two, everyday Brazilian speech very often uses the normal forms, above all for something that has already happened: Que bom que você veio! How nice that you came! That's what Dona Marta says at the door, and it's what you should say too. For the present or future you'll hear both: Que pena que você não pode ir and Que pena que você não possa ir. The subjunctive is the careful choice.

After fico feliz que, sinto muito que, tenho medo que, é uma pena que and me preocupa que, use the subjunctive. All of today's sentences with these are about the present or the future. Feelings about the past need one more form, which comes later.

The de in tenho medo de que is optional. Both Tenho medo que chova. and Tenho medo de que chova. are fine.

Same person? De + infinitive

The rule from yesterday still holds: if the person who feels and the person who does are the same, you don't need que or the subjunctive. Use the infinitive.

Portuguese English
Tenho medo de errar. I'm afraid of making a mistake.
Tenho medo que você erre. I'm afraid you'll make a mistake.
Fico feliz em ajudar. I'm glad to help.
Fico feliz que você me ajude. I'm glad you're helping me.
Sinto muito não poder ir. I'm sorry I can't go.
Sinto muito que você não possa ir. I'm sorry you can't go.

Words for feelings

Remember that these adjectives agree with the person, and that feelings of the moment go with estar (day 17).

Portuguese English
animado, animada excited
ansioso, ansiosa anxious
nervoso, nervosa nervous
aliviado, aliviada relieved
orgulhoso, orgulhosa (de) proud (of)
estar com medo (de) to be afraid (of)
estar com saudade (de) to miss (someone or something)
errar to make a mistake, to get something wrong
dar certo to work out, to go well
o desastre the disaster
o sucesso the success
Boa sorte! Good luck!
  • Estou com saudade da minha família. I miss my family.
  • Vai dar tudo certo! Everything's going to work out!
  • Espero que dê tudo certo. I hope everything works out.
