Good to know

  • Ser or estar? Use ser for what something is: identity, origin, jobs, personality, dates and time. Use estar for how something is right now, and for where people and things are: Ela é bonita. (She's beautiful.) Ela está bonita hoje. (She looks nice today.)
  • Events take ser for place and time: A festa é na casa da Ana. (The party is at Ana's house.) For people and things, use estar: A Ana está em casa. (Ana is at home.)
  • Telling the time: the verb agrees with the number of hours: É uma hora. (It's one o'clock.) São duas horas. (It's two o'clock.)
  • Same forms as ir: fui, foi, fomos, foram can mean "was/were" or "went", and fosse and for are shared too. Context tells you which: Foi ótimo! (It was great!) Fui ao mercado. (I went to the market.)
