Listen and read

Listen for the little words that move the story forward: primeiro, depois, então, aí, de repente, por isso, no final. Notice which past tense comes after each one.

Emma Lucas! O que aconteceu com o seu braço? Lucas! What happened to your arm?

Lucas Eu caí da bicicleta no sábado. Acabei de chegar do médico. I fell off my bike on Saturday. I’ve just come from the doctor’s.

Carol Nossa! Como foi? Wow! How did it happen?

First, I left home early and went to the park. It was a beautiful day.

Lucas Depois, eu andei uns dez quilômetros. Então parei para beber água. Then I rode about ten kilometers. So I stopped to drink some water.

And then, while I was drinking, a dog ran past in front of me.

Emma E você caiu? And you fell?

Lucas Ainda não! De repente, o cachorro voltou. Eu perdi o equilíbrio e caí em cima do braço. Not yet! Suddenly, the dog came back. I lost my balance and fell on my arm.

Carol Você quebrou o braço? Did you break your arm?

I didn’t break it, but I hurt my arm and my knee. That’s why I went to the doctor this morning.

Emma Ainda está doendo? Does it still hurt?

My arm hurts a little, and I have a headache. In the end, the dog’s owner drove me home.

Carol Coitado! E você acabou de comprar essa bicicleta… Poor thing! And you’ve only just bought that bike…

I know. But next Saturday I’m going again!

Você entendeu?

  2. Por que ele perdeu o equilíbrio?Porque estava chovendo. Porque um cachorro passou na frente dele. Porque a bicicleta era velha.

Putting a story in order

A story needs signposts. These are the ones Brazilians use most.

Portuguese English
primeiro first
depois then, afterwards
então so, then
aí and then, so (spoken)
de repente suddenly
enquanto while
quando when
por isso that's why, so
no final in the end
  • Primeiro eu tomei banho, depois tomei café. First I took a shower, then I had breakfast.
  • Eu estava cansado, então fui para casa. I was tired, so I went home.
  • Aí o cachorro voltou. And then the dog came back.

You met aí on day 18 as "there" (near you). In a story it means "and then", and in conversation you'll hear it in almost every sentence.

The two pasts from day 45 do the rest. The events that these words line up (saí, fui, parei, caí) are in the simple past. The background (estava um dia lindo, eu estava bebendo) is in the imperfect.

Acabar de: "have just"

Acabar means "to finish, to end". Acabar de + infinitive says that something happened a moment ago. Use acabar in the simple past: acabei, acabou, acabamos, acabaram.

  • Eu acabei de chegar. I've just arrived.
  • A Emma acabou de sair. Emma has just left.
  • A gente acabou de almoçar. We've just had lunch.
  • Eles acabaram de ligar. They've just called.

English says "I have just arrived", but don't reach for ter here: it's acabei de chegar. You'll also see the present, acabo de chegar, especially in writing. It means the same thing.

The body

Portuguese English
o corpo body
a cabeça head
o olho eye
o dente tooth
o braço arm
a mão, as mãos hand, hands
o dedo finger, toe
a barriga belly, stomach
as costas back
a perna leg
o joelho knee
o pé foot

A mão is feminine although it ends in -o, and as costas is always plural: Minhas costas estão doendo.

Getting hurt

Portuguese English
O que aconteceu? What happened?
cair to fall
machucar to hurt, to injure
quebrar to break
doer to hurt, to ache
Está doendo. It hurts.
a dor pain
estar com dor de cabeça to have a headache
estar com dor de barriga / de dente to have a stomachache / a toothache
estar com dor nas costas to have a backache
machucado / machucada hurt, injured

Cair in the simple past keeps its a and needs accents: eu caí, você / ele / ela caiu, nós caímos, vocês / eles / elas caíram. Machucar changes its spelling in the eu form to keep the "k" sound, like ficar: machuquei.

With doer, the part of the body is the subject, as in English "my head hurts". There are only two forms to learn in each tense: one for one thing and one for several.

  • Minha cabeça está doendo. My head hurts. (right now)
  • Meus pés estão doendo. My feet hurt.
  • Minha perna dói quando eu ando. My leg hurts when I walk.

"The arm", not "my arm". When it's obvious whose body it is, Portuguese uses o or a, not meu or minha: Eu machuquei o braço. is "I hurt my arm", and Ele quebrou a perna. is "He broke his leg".
