Lucas Emma, eu comprei uma bicicleta! Paguei oitocentos reais por ela. Emma, I bought a bike! I paid eight hundred reais for it.
Emma Que linda! É para você ou para a Bia? It’s lovely! Is it for you or for Bia?
Lucas É para mim! It’s for me!
And what do you want a bike in São Paulo for?
Lucas Para ir para o trabalho. Eu passo duas horas por dia no ônibus! To go to work. I spend two hours a day on the bus!
Emma E por onde você vai passar? As ruas são perigosas. And which way are you going to go? The streets are dangerous.
I’m going through the park and then along the bike lane on the avenue. That’s why it isn’t dangerous.
So you’re going to get here on time, at least once a week?
Very funny. On Saturday I’m going to ride around Ibirapuera Park for two hours. Are you coming with me?
Thanks for the invitation, but I need to finish a project for Monday.

Para: where something is headed
Para looks forward, to where something is going or what it's meant for. In speech it's usually shortened to pra.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Eu vou para casa. | I'm going home. (destination) |
| Eu estudo para falar bem. | I study in order to speak well. (purpose: para + infinitive) |
| Este presente é para você. | This present is for you. (the person who receives it) |
| O projeto é para segunda-feira. | The project is for Monday. (deadline) |
| Para mim, é fácil. | For me, it's easy. / In my opinion, it's easy. (opinion) |
- Para que você quer uma bicicleta? What do you want a bike for?
- Eu preciso de dinheiro para viajar. I need money to travel.
"To" + verb. When English "to" means "in order to", Portuguese needs para: I study to learn is Eu estudo para aprender. But after querer, poder, precisar and gostar de there's no para, because there's no "in order to": Eu quero aprender.
Por: what's behind it, or along the way
Por looks back at the cause, or at the path, the price and the time that something takes.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Obrigada pelo convite. | Thanks for the invitation. (reason) |
| Paguei oitocentos reais pela bicicleta. | I paid eight hundred reais for the bike. (exchange, price) |
| Eu esperei por duas horas. | I waited for two hours. (how long) |
| Eu vou pelo parque. | I'm going through the park. (through, along, around) |
| duas vezes por semana | twice a week (per) |
When por meets o, a, os, as, the two words always join:
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| por + as = pelas | pelas fotos (for the photos) |
- Eu passei pela sua rua ontem. I went down your street yesterday.
- A gente viajou pelo Brasil. We traveled around Brazil.
- Obrigado pela ajuda! Thanks for the help!
English "for" is the trap. It can be either word, so ask what it means. For you (it's going to you) is para você. For two hours (how long), for ten reais (the price) and thanks for… (the reason) are all por. The question words follow the same idea: Por que…? asks for the reason ("why?") and Para que…? asks for the purpose ("what for?").
Fixed phrases with por
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| por favor | please |
| por isso | that's why, so |
| por exemplo | for example |
| pelo menos | at least |
| por enquanto | for now |
It was raining, so I stayed home.
- Por enquanto, eu moro em São Paulo. For now, I live in São Paulo.
Verbs that bring their own preposition
Some verbs always come with the same little word, and it often isn't the one English uses. Learn the verb and its preposition together.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| gostar de | to like |
| precisar de | to need (+ a thing) |
| pensar em | to think about |
| sonhar com | to dream about |
| depender de | to depend on |
| acreditar em | to believe in, to believe (someone) |
De and em join the article in the usual way (do, da, no, na):
- Eu penso muito na minha família. I think about my family a lot.
- Depende do tempo. It depends on the weather.
- Ela sonha com uma casa na praia. She dreams about a house on the beach.
- Você acredita em mim? Do you believe me?
More words that join up
You know no, na, do, da. Em and de join other words in the same way.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| em + um = num, em + uma = numa | in a, on a |
| em + esse = nesse, em + essa = nessa | in that, on that |
| em + este = neste, em + esta = nesta | in this, on this |
| em + aquele = naquele, em + aquela = naquela | in that (over there, or back then) |
| de + esse = desse, de + essa = dessa | of that, from that |
| de + este = deste, de + esta = desta | of this, from this |
| de + aquele = daquele, de + aquela = daquela | of that, from that (over there) |
- Eu moro num apartamento pequeno. I live in a small apartment.
- Eu gosto desse filme. I like that movie.
- Naquela época, eu não tinha carro. Back then, I didn't have a car.
