Listen and read
Lucas uses both past tenses to tell his story. Listen for the moments when something happens (entrou, começou, convidou) and for the background behind them (tinha, tocava, estava tocando).
Emma Lucas, como você conheceu o Rafa? Lucas, how did you meet Rafa?
It was thirteen years ago. I was eighteen and I played guitar in a bar every Friday.
Emma E o Rafa trabalhava lá? And did Rafa work there?
No, he was a customer. One night, I was playing a song from Bahia when he walked into the bar.
Emma E o que ele fez? And what did he do?
Lucas Ele começou a cantar comigo! Ele cantava muito bem, e todo mundo aplaudiu. He started singing with me! He sang really well, and everybody clapped.
Emma Você já conhecia Salvador naquela época? Did you already know Salvador back then?
I didn’t. And I didn’t know he was a cook. I found out that night, because he invited me to dinner at his place.
Emma E a comida estava boa? And was the food good?
Lucas Estava ótima! Enquanto ele cozinhava, a gente conversava sobre música. De repente, eram três horas da manhã. It was great! While he cooked, we talked about music. Suddenly, it was three in the morning.
Emma E vocês ficaram amigos. And you became friends.
Lucas Ficamos. We did. Back then Rafa wanted to open a restaurant, but he couldn’t: he didn’t have the money. Five years later, he was able to.
Você entendeu?
- Quantos anos o Lucas tinha quando conheceu o Rafa?Trinta e um. Dezoito. Treze.
Estava jantando. Estava cozinhando. Estava tocando violão.
- O que o Rafa fez no bar?Abriu um restaurante. Começou a cozinhar.

Two pasts, two jobs
Think of a story as a movie. The simple past is the action: the things that happen, one after another, each one finished. The imperfect is the set: what things were like, what people used to do, and what was already going on when the action started.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Ele entrou no bar. | He walked into the bar. (an event: simple past) |
| Ele começou a cantar. | He started to sing. (the next event: simple past) |
| Eu tinha dezoito anos. | I was eighteen. (background: imperfect) |
| Eu tocava violão toda sexta-feira. | I played guitar every Friday. (a habit: imperfect) |
| Ele cantava muito bem. | He sang really well. (a description: imperfect) |
A quick test: if you could say "used to" or "was …ing" in English, you need the imperfect. If it happened once, or a counted number of times, and it's over, you need the simple past.
- Eu morava em Curitiba. I used to live in Curitiba. (that was my life then)
- Eu morei em Curitiba por dez anos. I lived in Curitiba for ten years. (a finished block of time)
- Eu fui ao Rio três vezes. I went to Rio three times. (counted)
A length of time closes the action. As soon as you say how long something lasted (por dez anos, durante duas horas, o dia todo) or how many times it happened, you're looking at it as a finished whole, so Portuguese uses the simple past, even when it lasted a long time.
The interrupted action
The two tenses often meet in one sentence. Something was going on (imperfect, usually estava + -ndo) when something else happened (simple past).
- Eu estava dormindo quando o telefone tocou. I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- Estava chovendo quando eu saí de casa. It was raining when I left home.
- Ela estava cozinhando quando eu cheguei. She was cooking when I arrived.
With enquanto ("while"), two things were going on at the same time, so both are in the imperfect:
- Enquanto ele cozinhava, a gente conversava. While he cooked, we talked.
Words that point to each tense
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| ontem, anteontem, na semana passada | yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week → simple past |
| uma vez, duas vezes | once, twice → simple past |
| de repente | suddenly → simple past |
| naquele dia, naquela noite | that day, that night → simple past |
| há dois anos, em 2015 | two years ago, in 2015 → simple past |
| sempre, geralmente, às vezes | always, usually, sometimes → imperfect |
| todo dia, toda sexta-feira | every day, every Friday → imperfect |
| antigamente, naquela época | in the old days, back then → imperfect |
| quando eu era criança | when I was a child → imperfect |
| enquanto | while → imperfect |
These words point the way, but they don't decide. What decides is what you mean: Ontem eu fui ao parque is an event, and Ontem estava frio is a description, both with ontem.
Four verbs that change meaning
With a few verbs, the two tenses are translated by different English verbs. The imperfect is a state that was already there. The simple past is the moment something happened.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Eu conhecia o Rafa. | I knew Rafa. (already) |
| Eu conheci o Rafa em um bar. | I met Rafa in a bar. (for the first time) |
| Eu sabia da festa. | I knew about the party. |
| Eu soube da festa ontem. | I found out about the party yesterday. |
| Ele queria abrir um restaurante. | He wanted to open a restaurant. |
| Ele não quis ir à festa. | He refused to go to the party. |
| Eu não podia sair. | I couldn't go out. (I wasn't able or allowed to) |
| Eu não pude sair ontem. | I couldn't go out yesterday. (I tried or planned to, and it didn't happen) |
The simple past of saber is soube, soube, soubemos, souberam. The others you met on day 32 (quis, pude) and day 38 (conhecer).
Friends and couples
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| conhecer | to meet (for the first time), to know (a person) |
| o melhor amigo / a melhor amiga | best friend |
| a amizade | friendship |
| o namorado / a namorada | boyfriend / girlfriend |
| namorar | to date, to go out with |
| casar com | to marry |
| o casamento | wedding, marriage |
| ficar amigos | to become friends |
