Good to know

  • Tocar or jogar? Tocar is for instruments and music, jogar for games and sports: Ela toca piano. (She plays the piano.) / Ela joga tênis. (She plays tennis.)
  • Phones and doorbells: tocar is also "to ring": O telefone tocou. (The phone rang.) / O despertador não tocou! (The alarm didn't go off!)
  • Tocar em means "to touch": Alguém tocou no meu celular? (Did someone touch my phone?) And tocar no assunto means "to bring something up": Ele nunca toca nesse assunto. (He never brings that up.)
