Listen and read

Carol and Lucas give Emma a lot of advice. Listen for the small linking words: para que, embora, antes que, caso, desde que, até que, mesmo que, sem que, a não ser que. After each one, the verb is in the subjunctive.

Carol Vamos ensaiar? É importante que você faça a apresentação inteira pelo menos uma vez antes que a Renata chegue amanhã. Shall we rehearse? It’s important that you do the whole presentation at least once before Renata arrives tomorrow.

Emma Tudo bem. Embora eu esteja nervosa, acho que estou pronta. All right. Although I’m nervous, I think I’m ready.

Carol Ótimo. Fale devagar, para que ela entenda cada ideia. Great. Speak slowly, so that she understands each idea.

Emma E caso ela pergunte o preço, o que eu digo? And in case she asks the price, what do I say?

Carol Caso ela pergunte, diga que eu explico essa parte no final. If she asks, say that I’ll explain that part at the end.

Lucas Emma, é melhor que você não leia os slides. Olhe para ela. Emma, it’s better that you don’t read the slides. Look at her.

Emma Eu sei, mas tenho medo de esquecer alguma coisa. Posso levar as minhas anotações? I know, but I’m afraid of forgetting something. Can I take my notes?

Carol Pode, desde que você não olhe para o papel o tempo todo. You can, as long as you don’t look at the paper the whole time.

Emma Combinado. Vou ensaiar até que fique natural. Deal. I’m going to rehearse until it feels natural.

Lucas Mesmo que você erre uma palavra, não pare. Ninguém vai perceber. Even if you get a word wrong, don’t stop. Nobody will notice.

Carol É verdade. E não mude nada nos slides sem que eu veja antes, está bem? That’s true. And don’t change anything on the slides without my seeing it first, all right?

Emma Está bem. A não ser que eu ache um erro de português, claro! All right. Unless I find a mistake in the Portuguese, of course!

Carol Nesse caso, pode corrigir. Apesar de ter pouco tempo no Brasil, você já escreve melhor do que o Lucas. In that case, you can correct it. In spite of having been in Brazil a short time, you already write better than Lucas.

Lucas Ei! Eu ouvi isso! Hey! I heard that!

Você entendeu? (Did you understand?)

  1. O que a Emma e a Carol estão fazendo?Estão almoçando com a Renata. Estão fazendo as malas. Estão ensaiando a apresentação.
  2. Quem vai explicar o preço para a Renata?A Carol. A Emma. O Lucas.
  3. O que a Emma pode levar para a apresentação?O computador do Lucas. Um presente para a Renata. As anotações dela.
  4. O que a Emma pode corrigir nos slides sem falar com a Carol?Um erro de português. O preço. As cores.

It's important that…

Expressions that judge an action (important, necessary, better, good) work like querer que: what follows isn't a fact, it's what someone thinks should happen. So: subjunctive.

Portuguese English
É importante que você venha. It's important that you come.
É necessário que todos tragam o passaporte. Everyone needs to bring their passport.
É melhor que a gente vá de táxi. It's better that we go by taxi.
É bom que vocês cheguem cedo. It's good for you (all) to arrive early.

Compare them with yesterday's expressions of certainty, which keep the normal forms: É verdade que ele vem. It's true that he's coming. But É importante que ele venha. It's important that he comes.

When you're speaking in general, about nobody in particular, there's no que and the verb stays in the infinitive:

  • É importante dormir bem. It's important to sleep well. (anyone)
  • É importante que você durma bem. It's important that you sleep well. (you)

Nine linking words that take the subjunctive

A linking word (a conjunction) joins two halves of a sentence. After these nine, the verb is always in the subjunctive. There's nothing to decide: learn each one with an example and the form comes with it.

Portuguese English Example
para que so that Fale devagar para que ela entenda.
embora although Embora esteja cansada, ela vai trabalhar.
antes que before Vamos sair antes que chova.
até que until Eu espero até que você volte.
caso in case, if Caso você precise de ajuda, me ligue.
a não ser que unless Eu vou a pé, a não ser que chova.
sem que without Ele sempre sai sem que ninguém veja.
mesmo que even if Mesmo que faça frio, eu vou correr.
desde que as long as, provided that Você pode ir, desde que volte cedo.

Why the subjunctive? Look at what these words introduce: a purpose (para que), a condition (caso, desde que, a não ser que, mesmo que), or something that hasn't happened yet (antes que, até que). None of these is a fact. Embora is the odd one out: the thing after it usually is true (Emma really is nervous), and it takes the subjunctive anyway. Learn it as a pair: embora esteja, embora seja, embora tenha.

  • Vou explicar de novo para que tudo fique claro. I'll explain again so that everything is clear.
  • Embora ele diga que está bem, eu acho que ele está doente. Although he says he's fine, I think he's sick.
  • Caso a Bia venha para São Paulo, ela pode ficar aqui. If Bia comes to São Paulo, she can stay here.
  • Não mude nada sem que eu veja. Don't change anything without my seeing it.

Three things not to mix up:

  • Embora the linking word has nothing to do with ir embora (to leave, to go away): Vou embora means "I'm leaving".
  • Desde que with the subjunctive means "as long as". With the normal forms it means "since" in time: Desde que cheguei ao Brasil, falo português todo dia. Since I arrived in Brazil, I've spoken Portuguese every day.
  • Caso is a slightly more careful "if". The everyday word for "if" is se, and it uses different forms that you'll learn on day 64. Until then, caso + subjunctive does the job.

The shortcut: same person, infinitive

You know the question by now: how many people? When both halves of the sentence are about the same person, Portuguese prefers a preposition and the infinitive, which you've been using since day 26 (antes de sair, depois de comer) and day 46 (para aprender).

Two different people: subjunctive The same person: infinitive
para que + subjunctive para + infinitive
antes que + subjunctive antes de + infinitive
sem que + subjunctive sem + infinitive
até que + subjunctive até + infinitive
embora + subjunctive apesar de + infinitive
  • Eu falo devagar para que você entenda. I speak slowly so that you understand. (I speak, you understand)
  • Eu estudo todo dia para falar bem. I study every day to speak well. (I study, I speak)
  • Ligue antes que ela saia. Call before she leaves.
  • Ligue antes de sair. Call before you leave.
  • Ele saiu sem dizer nada. He left without saying anything.
  • Apesar de estar cansada, a Emma foi trabalhar. In spite of being tired, Emma went to work.

Embora and apesar de. Embora has no infinitive version of its own, so its partner is apesar de ("in spite of"), which also works before a noun: Apesar da chuva, a gente foi à praia. Embora itself is fine with one person too: Embora eu esteja nervosa, estou pronta. In conversation you'll hear apesar de and plain mas much more often; embora is common in writing and careful speech.
