By the end of today you can:
- Tell one person or several people what to do: Tome, Beba, Abram
- Tell them what not to do: Não esqueça, Não cheguem tarde
- Use the ten most common irregular commands (seja, vá, faça, venha…)
- Understand the short commands Brazilians use with friends (Fala! Vem cá! Me dá…)
- Follow a doctor's advice and a simple recipe
Lucas fell off his bike last week, and his arm still hurts. This morning Emma goes with him to see a doctor.

Listen once without reading. The doctor gives Lucas a lot of instructions. Which two things does she tell him not to do?
Médica Bom dia, Lucas. Sente aqui, por favor. O que aconteceu? Good morning, Lucas. Sit here, please. What happened?
Lucas Eu caí da bicicleta na semana passada e meu braço ainda está doendo. I fell off my bike last week and my arm still hurts.
Médica Mostre o braço, por favor. Agora levante devagar. Está doendo aqui? Show me your arm, please. Now raise it slowly. Does it hurt here?
Lucas Ai! Está, sim. Ow! Yes, it does.
Médica Não está quebrado, mas você precisa descansar. Tome este remédio duas vezes por dia, depois do almoço e depois do jantar. It isn’t broken, but you need to rest. Take this medicine twice a day, after lunch and after dinner.
Lucas Eu posso jogar futebol no sábado? Can I play soccer on Saturday?
Médica Não! Não jogue futebol e não ande de bicicleta por duas semanas. No! Don’t play soccer and don’t ride your bike for two weeks.
Lucas Duas semanas? E o que eu faço? Two weeks? And what do I do?
Médica Fique em casa, ponha gelo no braço e durma bem. E beba bastante água. Stay home, put ice on your arm and sleep well. And drink plenty of water.
Emma Não se preocupe, doutora. Eu vou cuidar dele. Don’t worry, doctor. I’m going to look after him.
Médica Ótimo. Lucas, volte aqui na segunda-feira. E tenha paciência! Great. Lucas, come back here on Monday. And be patient!

The imperative: telling someone what to do
The imperative is the verb form for instructions, advice and orders: Take this. Open the door. Come back on Monday. You've been using a few since day 25 as fixed phrases (vire, siga, pegue). Today you learn how to make one from any verb.
Start from the eu form of the present, take off the -o, and add the "opposite" vowel:
- -ar verbs take -e: eu tomo → tome
- -er and -ir verbs take -a: eu bebo → beba, eu abro → abra
For more than one person (vocês), add -m.
| Verb | Eu (present) | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| tomar | tomo | Tome! / Tomem! | Take! |
| falar | falo | Fale! / Falem! | Speak! |
| beber | bebo | Beba! / Bebam! | Drink! |
| comer | como | Coma! / Comam! | Eat! |
| abrir | abro | Abra! / Abram! | Open! |
| dormir | durmo | Durma! / Durmam! | Sleep! |
| ouvir | ouço | Ouça! / Ouçam! | Listen! |
Starting from the eu form is what makes this work for verbs like dormir and ouvir: the odd eu form (durmo, ouço) carries over into the command.
- Tome este remédio. Take this medicine.
- Beba bastante água. Drink plenty of water.
- Abram os livros, por favor. Open your books, please. (to a group)
Three spelling changes you already know. They're the same ones as in cheguei, fiquei, comecei (day 29), and they're there to keep the sound of the verb:
- -car → -que: ficar → Fique em casa.
- -gar → -gue: chegar → Chegue cedo., pagar → Pague aqui., jogar → Não jogue futebol.
- -çar → -ce: começar → Comece agora.
Ten irregular commands
| Verb | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|
| ser | Seja! / Sejam! | Be! |
| estar | Esteja! / Estejam! | Be! (somewhere, or in a state) |
| ir | Vá! / Vão! | Go! |
| dar | Dê! / Deem! | Give! |
| fazer | Faça! / Façam! | Do! / Make! |
| dizer | Diga! / Digam! | Say! / Tell! |
| vir | Venha! / Venham! | Come! |
| ter | Tenha! / Tenham! | Have! |
| pôr | Ponha! / Ponham! | Put! |
| trazer | Traga! / Tragam! | Bring! |
Only the first four are truly irregular. The other six follow today's rule, because their eu forms are faço, digo, venho, tenho, ponho and trago.
- Tenha paciência! Be patient! (literally "have patience")
- Venha aqui amanhã. Come here tomorrow.
- Façam o exercício em casa. Do the exercise at home. (to a group)
- Vá ao médico. Go to the doctor.
Don't! And where me and se go
For a negative command, put não in front. The verb doesn't change.
- Não abra a porta. Don't open the door.
- Não esqueçam as chaves. Don't forget the keys. (to a group)
- Não ponha muito sal. Don't put in a lot of salt.
In Brazilian speech, me, se and nos stay before the verb, just as they do in other sentences:
- Me diga uma coisa. Tell me something.
- Não se preocupe. Don't worry.
- Me traga a conta, por favor. Bring me the check, please.
And for "let's", you already have vamos + infinitive from day 19: Vamos fazer um bolo! Let's make a cake!
A command isn't rude, but a softener helps. Add por favor, or turn it into a question with pode: Pode abrir a janela, por favor? is gentler than Abra a janela. Day 52 adds the even more polite poderia.
What you'll hear among friends
In relaxed speech in most of Brazil, people use a shorter command that looks exactly like the ele/ela form of the present. You don't need to produce it yet, but you'll hear it all day:
| Portuguese | The form you learned today | English |
|---|---|---|
| Fala! | Fale! | Speak! / Go ahead! |
| Olha! | Olhe! | Look! |
| Espera! | Espere! | Wait! |
| Vem cá! | Venha cá! | Come here! |
| Me dá um café. | Me dê um café. | Give me a coffee. |
| Faz isso para mim? | Faça isso para mim. | Do this for me? |
| Desculpa! | Desculpe! | Sorry! |
So the Desculpa! you learned on day 1 was a command all along: "excuse (me)!"
When do you use which? The forms in -e / -a (fale, venha, faça) are what you'll read in recipes, signs, instructions and ads, and what a doctor, a boss or a stranger will say to you. They're understood everywhere and never wrong, so they're the ones to practice. The short forms belong to conversation with people you know well.
