By the end of today you can:
- Talk about plans with ir + infinitive and with the plain present
- Say when: daqui a duas semanas, na semana que vem, depois de amanhã
- Read the simple future (viajarei, fará) in news, signs and ads
- Wonder out loud with será que…?
- Say what you intend, plan and hope to do
It's Tuesday night at Rafa's restaurant. Rafa is from Salvador, in Bahia, and he has an idea for Emma and Lucas.
Warm-up: do you remember?
Before anything new, pull these out of memory. They come from earlier days, some from yesterday and some from weeks ago. Getting one wrong is useful: it shows you what to look at again.

Listen and read
Listen for the words that point to the future. Near the end, Rafa reads a sentence from a travel site. Why does Lucas laugh at it?
Rafa Emma, você já conhece Salvador? Emma, have you been to Salvador yet?
Emma Ainda não. Mas eu quero muito conhecer! Not yet. But I really want to!
Rafa Então vamos! Eu vou visitar minha família daqui a dez dias. Você e o Lucas vão comigo. Then let’s go! I’m going to visit my family ten days from now. You and Lucas are coming with me.
Lucas Sério? Quando a gente viaja? Seriously? When do we travel?
Rafa O voo sai no sábado de manhã e a gente volta na quarta. The flight leaves on Saturday morning and we come back on Wednesday.
Emma E onde nós vamos ficar? And where are we going to stay?
Rafa Na casa da minha mãe. Ela vai adorar vocês. E vai fazer moqueca! At my mom’s house. She’s going to love you. And she’s going to make moqueca!
Lucas Será que o meu braço vai estar bom até lá? I wonder if my arm will be OK by then.
Emma Vai, sim. E será que vai fazer sol? Yes, it will. And do you think it’ll be sunny?
Rafa Em Salvador sempre faz sol! Eu pretendo levar vocês à praia todo dia. In Salvador it’s always sunny! I intend to take you to the beach every day.
Emma Que maravilha! Amanhã eu vou comprar as passagens. How wonderful! Tomorrow I’m going to buy the tickets.
Rafa Olha o que diz este site: "Você amará a Bahia e voltará muitas vezes." Look what this site says: "You will love Bahia and will return many times."
Lucas "Amará"? Isso é português de livro, Rafa! "Amará"? That’s book Portuguese, Rafa!
Rafa É verdade. Mas vocês vão amar mesmo. True. But you really are going to love it.
Você entendeu?
- Para onde eles vão viajar?Para Toronto. Para Salvador. Para o Rio.
- Quando o Rafa vai visitar a família? No ano que vem. Daqui a dez dias. Amanhã.
- Onde eles vão ficar?Na casa da Bia. Na casa da mãe do Rafa. Num hotel.
- Quem vai comprar as passagens?A mãe do Rafa. O Lucas. A Emma.

Three ways to talk about the future
1. ir + infinitive. This is the future you learned on day 19, and it's the one Brazilians use nearly all the time in conversation.
- Eu vou comprar as passagens amanhã. I'm going to buy the tickets tomorrow.
- Ela vai adorar vocês. She's going to love you.
- Vai chover. It's going to rain.
2. The plain present, for plans that are fixed, when a time word makes the future clear. English does the same: "The flight leaves on Saturday."
- O voo sai no sábado de manhã. The flight leaves on Saturday morning.
- A gente volta na quarta. We come back on Wednesday.
- Amanhã eu trabalho em casa. Tomorrow I'm working from home.
3. The simple future (amará, voltará), a single word. You'll meet it in writing and in formal speech, and it has its own section below.
What about "I'm going to go"? Vou ir exists and you'll hear it, but most of the time Brazilians say vou on its own: Amanhã eu vou à praia. Tomorrow I'm going to (go to) the beach.
When? Time words for the future
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| amanhã | tomorrow |
| depois de amanhã | the day after tomorrow |
| daqui a dois dias | two days from now, in two days |
| daqui a pouco | in a little while |
| na semana que vem | next week |
| no mês que vem | next month |
| no ano que vem | next year |
| no próximo sábado | next Saturday |
| até lá | by then, until then |
Daqui a means "from now" and looks forward. It's the mirror image of há and faz from day 33, which look back:
- Eu cheguei há dois meses. I arrived two months ago.
- Eu vou voltar daqui a dois meses. I'm going back two months from now.
Que vem means "that's coming": a semana que vem is literally "the week that's coming". In speech people often drop the na: Semana que vem eu viajo.
The simple future: -rei, -rá, -remos, -rão
This tense is one word: add the endings to the whole infinitive. The endings are the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu viajarei | I will travel |
| você viajará | you will travel |
| ele viajará / ela viajará | he / she will travel |
| nós viajaremos | we will travel |
| vocês viajarão | you (all) will travel |
| eles viajarão / elas viajarão | they will travel |
Only three verbs are irregular. They lose the -ze- of the infinitive:
| Verb | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|
| fazer | farei, fará, faremos, farão | will do, will make |
| dizer | direi, dirá, diremos, dirão | will say |
| trazer | trarei, trará, traremos, trarão | will bring |
Where will you find it? In news headlines, weather forecasts, signs, contracts, ads and speeches:
- O voo chegará às vinte horas. The flight will arrive at 8 p.m.
- Amanhã fará sol em todo o Nordeste. Tomorrow it will be sunny all over the Northeast.
- A loja abrirá no próximo sábado. The store will open next Saturday.
In conversation it sounds stiff, which is why Lucas laughs at amará. Learn to recognize it and to write it, and keep saying vou + infinitive.
Watch the last syllable. Eles falaram (they spoke) and eles falarão (they will speak) differ only in the ending and in the stress: fa-LA-ram is past, fa-la-RÃO is future. Listen: Eles chegaram ontem. Eles chegarão amanhã.
Wondering and planning
Será que…? is one of the most useful phrases in Brazilian Portuguese. Será is the simple future of ser, and the phrase means "I wonder if…" or "Do you think…?" Put it in front of any ordinary sentence:
- Será que vai chover? I wonder if it's going to rain.
- Será que ela gostou do presente? Do you think she liked the present?
- Será que o Lucas está em casa? I wonder if Lucas is home.
Three verbs for plans, each followed by an infinitive:
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| pretender | to intend to, to plan to |
| planejar | to plan |
| esperar | to hope (and, as you know, to wait) |
- Eu pretendo viajar em dezembro. I intend to travel in December.
- Nós planejamos ficar quatro dias. We're planning to stay four days.
- Eu espero voltar no ano que vem. I hope to come back next year.
Pretender is a false friend. It never means "to pretend". Eu pretendo estudar is "I intend to study".
Planning a trip
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| a viagem | trip |
| a passagem | ticket (plane, bus) |
| o voo | flight |
| reservar | to book, to reserve |
| a reserva | booking, reservation |
| a mala | suitcase |
| o passaporte | passport |
| fazer a mala | to pack |
| a pousada | guesthouse, inn |
| o Nordeste | the Northeast (of Brazil) |
