Listen and read

Yesterday you learned how to build the imperfect. As you listen, ask yourself what each one is doing: is it a habit, a description, or something that was going on?

Lucas Emma, como era a sua vida no Canadá quando você era pequena? Emma, what was your life in Canada like when you were little?

Emma Era bem diferente daqui. No inverno fazia muito frio e tinha neve na rua durante meses. It was really different from here. In winter it was very cold and there was snow on the street for months.

Lucas Nossa! E o que você fazia com tanto frio? Wow! And what did you do when it was that cold?

Emma Eu costumava patinar no lago com o meu pai. A gente ia todo sábado. I used to skate on the lake with my dad. We went every Saturday.

Lucas Vocês tinham animais em casa? Did you have animals at home?

Emma Tínhamos. Eu tinha uma cachorra. Ela se chamava Maple, era branca e dormia na minha cama. We did. I had a dog. Her name was Maple, she was white and she slept on my bed.

Lucas Eu tinha um gato e um pássaro. O gato estava sempre olhando para o pássaro! I had a cat and a bird. The cat was always looking at the bird!

Emma Coitado do pássaro! E você, costumava brincar na rua? Poor bird! And you, did you use to play in the street?

Lucas Todo dia. Eu jogava futebol até a noite, e minha mãe ficava brava. Every day. I played soccer until night, and my mom would get mad.

Emma Que horas eram quando você voltava para casa? What time was it when you got home?

Lucas Eram umas oito horas, e já estava escuro. Tinha muitas crianças na minha rua. It was about eight, and it was already dark. There were a lot of kids on my street.

Lucas Emma, eu queria ver uma foto da Maple. Você podia me mostrar? Emma, I’d like to see a photo of Maple. Could you show me?

Emma Claro! Tenho muitas no celular. Of course! I have a lot on my phone.

Você entendeu?

  1. Como era o inverno no Canadá?Fazia calor e tinha sol. Chovia todo dia. Fazia muito frio e tinha neve.
  2. O que a Emma costumava fazer no sábado?Patinar no lago. Jogar futebol na rua. Ficar em casa.
  3. Quem era a Maple?A mãe da Emma. A gata do Lucas. A cachorra da Emma.
  4. Por que a mãe do Lucas ficava brava?Porque ele não gostava de gatos. Porque ele tinha um pássaro. Porque ele jogava futebol até a noite.

Habits in the past: "used to"

The imperfect's first job is to say what someone did regularly, again and again, at some time in the past. English has three ways to say this, and Portuguese uses the imperfect for all of them:

  • Eu jogava futebol todo dia. I used to play soccer every day. / I played soccer every day.
  • Minha mãe ficava brava. My mom would get mad.

You can also say it with costumava + infinitive, from costumar, "to be in the habit of":

  • Eu costumava patinar no lago. I used to skate on the lake.
  • A gente costumava almoçar na casa da minha avó. We used to have lunch at my grandmother's.

The trap for English speakers: English often uses its plain past for a habit ("I played every day"). In Portuguese the simple past, joguei, is for something that happened and finished, usually once. If you could say "used to" in English, use the imperfect.

Setting the scene

The imperfect describes what a person, a place or a situation was like. It's also what you use for age, the time and the weather in the past.

Portuguese English
A casa era grande. The house was big. (description)
Ela era branca e muito carinhosa. She was white and very affectionate. (description)
Eu tinha oito anos. I was eight. (age)
Era uma hora. / Eram oito horas. It was one o'clock. / It was eight o'clock. (time)
Fazia muito frio. It was very cold. (weather)
Estava escuro. It was dark. (how things were at that moment)

The difference between ser and estar stays the same in the past: era for what something was like, estava for how or where it was at that moment.

Tinha also means "there was" and "there were", just as tem means "there is" and "there are" (day 18). It never changes, even when you're talking about many things:

  • Tinha neve na rua. There was snow on the street.
  • Tinha muitas crianças na minha rua. There were a lot of kids on my street.

In formal writing you'll see havia instead of tinha.

What was going on: estava + -ando

For an action that was in progress at some moment in the past, put estar in the imperfect and add the -ando, -endo, -indo form from day 36.

Portuguese English
eu estava falando I was talking
você estava / ele estava / ela estava comendo you were / he was / she was eating
nós estávamos dormindo we were sleeping
vocês estavam / eles estavam / elas estavam saindo you (all) / they were leaving
  • O gato estava olhando para o pássaro. The cat was looking at the bird.
  • O que você estava fazendo? What were you doing?
  • Estava chovendo. It was raining.

The plain imperfect can mean the same thing (Chovia is also "It was raining"), but in speech Brazilians prefer estava + -ndo for an action in progress.

Being polite

The imperfect softens a request. You've used eu queria since day 22. Podia does the same job for "could you…?":

  • Eu queria um café, por favor. I'd like a coffee, please.
  • Eu queria falar com a Carol. I'd like to speak with Carol.
  • Você podia me ajudar? Could you help me?

These aren't about the past at all. The imperfect here puts a little distance between you and the request, the way "I wanted to ask you…" does in English.

Animals

Portuguese English
o animal, os animais animal, animals
o cachorro / a cachorra dog
o gato / a gata cat
o pássaro bird
o peixe fish
o cavalo horse
a vaca cow
o porco pig
a galinha chicken, hen
o animal de estimação pet
