Listen and read

Listen once without reading. You'll hear a lot of verbs ending in -ava and -ia. They're all about Dona Marta's childhood: what do you think those endings mean?

Dona Marta Nesta foto eu tinha oito anos. In this photo I was eight years old.

Emma Que linda! Onde a senhora morava? How lovely! Where did you live?

Dona Marta A gente morava em uma fazenda em Minas Gerais, perto de uma cidade pequena. We lived on a farm in Minas Gerais, near a small town.

Emma A sua família era grande? Was your family big?

Dona Marta Era. Eu tinha seis irmãos. Meu pai trabalhava na fazenda e minha mãe cozinhava para todo mundo. It was. I had six brothers and sisters. My father worked on the farm and my mother cooked for everyone.

Emma E a senhora ia para a escola? And did you go to school?

Dona Marta Ia, sim. Eu e meus irmãos íamos a pé. A escola ficava longe! Yes, I did. My brothers and sisters and I went on foot. The school was far away!

Emma O que vocês faziam depois da escola? What did you do after school?

Dona Marta A gente brincava no quintal e nadava no rio. Naquela época, as crianças não tinham celular. We played in the yard and swam in the river. Back then, children didn’t have cell phones.

Emma Em Toronto era diferente. Eu morava em um apartamento e via muita televisão. In Toronto it was different. I lived in an apartment and watched a lot of television.

Dona Marta Antigamente a vida era mais simples. Mas a gente era muito feliz. In the old days life was simpler. But we were very happy.

Emma A senhora tem saudade da fazenda? Do you miss the farm?

Dona Marta Tenho. Meus avós vinham almoçar todo domingo, e minha mãe punha uma mesa enorme no quintal. I do. My grandparents came for lunch every Sunday, and my mother set a huge table in the yard.

A second past tense

In week 5 you learned the simple past: morei, comi, fui. It reports something that happened and finished: Ontem eu comi pizza.

Portuguese has a second past tense, the imperfect (pretérito imperfeito). It doesn't report an event. It paints a picture of how things were or used to be, with no beginning or end in view: Eu morava em uma fazenda. "I lived / I used to live on a farm."

Today is about how to build it. Tomorrow you'll see everything it's used for, and on day 45 you'll learn to choose between the two pasts. For now, use the imperfect for what life was like when you were a child.

-ar verbs: -ava

Take off -ar and add -ava, -ava, -ávamos, -avam.

Portuguese English
eu morava I lived, I used to live
você morava / ele morava / ela morava you / he / she lived
nós morávamos we lived
vocês moravam / eles moravam / elas moravam you (all) / they lived
  • Meu pai trabalhava na fazenda. My father worked on the farm.
  • Nós brincávamos no quintal. We used to play in the yard.
  • Vocês falavam inglês em casa? Did you (all) speak English at home?

Two things to notice:

  • The eu form and the você / ele / ela form are the same. When it isn't clear who you mean, say the pronoun: Eu morava em Toronto. Ela morava em Minas.
  • The nós form has an accent, because the stress stays on the same syllable in all four forms: mo-RA-va, mo-RÁ-vamos.

-er and -ir verbs: -ia

Verbs in -er and -ir share one set of endings: -ia, -ia, -íamos, -iam.

Portuguese English
eu comia I ate, I used to eat
você comia / ele comia / ela comia you / he / she ate
nós comíamos we ate
vocês comiam / eles comiam / elas comiam you (all) / they ate
  • Eu dormia no mesmo quarto que a minha irmã. I slept in the same room as my sister.
  • A gente abria os presentes de manhã. We used to open the presents in the morning.
  • Meus pais liam o jornal todo dia. My parents read the newspaper every day.

Here's the good news. Almost every verb that is irregular in the present or the simple past is regular in the imperfect:

Portuguese English
fazer → eu fazia I did, I used to do / make
estar → eu estava I was
ir → eu ia, nós íamos I went, we went (used to go)
ver → eu via I saw, I used to see / watch
dizer → eu dizia I said, I used to say
querer → eu queria I wanted
poder → eu podia I could
saber → eu sabia I knew

You already know one of these: eu queria from day 22, the polite "I'd like". It's the imperfect of querer.

The only four irregular verbs

Only four verbs don't follow the rule, and you'll use the first two all the time.

Portuguese English
ser: eu era, ele era, nós éramos, eles eram I was, he was, we were, they were
ter: eu tinha, ele tinha, nós tínhamos, eles tinham I had, he had, we had, they had
vir: eu vinha, ele vinha, nós vínhamos, eles vinham I came, he came, we came, they came (used to come)
pôr: eu punha, ele punha, nós púnhamos, eles punham I put, he put, we put, they put (used to put)
  • Quando eu era criança, eu tinha um cachorro. When I was a child, I had a dog.
  • Nós éramos seis irmãos. There were six of us brothers and sisters.
  • Meus avós vinham almoçar todo domingo. My grandparents used to come for lunch every Sunday.
  • Minha mãe punha a mesa no quintal. My mother used to set the table in the yard.

Pôr means "to put", and pôr a mesa is "to set the table". It's a very irregular verb, and in everyday speech Brazilians often say colocar (a regular -ar verb) instead. For now, recognise punha; you'll meet the rest of pôr later in the course.

Words for "back then"

Portuguese English
quando eu era criança when I was a child
quando eu tinha dez anos when I was ten
naquela época back then, at that time
antigamente in the old days
a infância childhood
a criança child
brincar to play (as children do)
o brinquedo toy
a fazenda farm
o quintal yard, backyard
o rio river
ter saudade de to miss (a person, a place, a time)

Three verbs for "to play". Brincar is what children do: play with toys, play in the yard. For a game or a sport, the verb is jogar: Eu jogava futebol. For an instrument, it's tocar: O Lucas toca violão. English uses one word for all three, so this is an easy mistake to make.
