Listen and read

Listen without reading first, and listen for numbers: how many years, how many days, how many months?

Emma Dona Marta, eu trouxe uma lembrança do Rio para a senhora. Dona Marta, I brought you a souvenir from Rio.

Dona Marta Que amor! Obrigada, minha filha. Quanto tempo vocês ficaram lá? How sweet! Thank you, dear. How long did you stay there?

Emma Só dois dias. A senhora já esteve no Rio? Only two days. Have you ever been to Rio?

Dona Marta Já, mas faz muito tempo. Eu fui lá pela primeira vez há trinta anos, com o meu marido. Yes, but it’s been a long time. I went there for the first time thirty years ago, with my husband.

Emma E da última vez? And the last time?

Dona Marta Da última vez, nós ficamos lá durante uma semana. Isso foi há dez anos. The last time, we stayed there for a week. That was ten years ago.

Emma E faz quanto tempo que a senhora mora em São Paulo? And how long have you lived in São Paulo?

Dona Marta Faz quarenta e dois anos que eu moro aqui. Cheguei de Minas com vinte anos. I’ve lived here for forty-two years. I came from Minas when I was twenty.

Emma Nossa! Quarenta e dois anos! Wow! Forty-two years!

Dona Marta E você? Faz um mês que você mora no Brasil, né? And you? You’ve been living in Brazil for a month, right?

Emma Faz! Eu cheguei há um mês. E não falo inglês desde sexta-feira! Yes! I arrived a month ago. And I haven’t spoken English since Friday!

Dona Marta Muito bem! E Minas, você já visitou? Well done! And Minas, have you visited yet?

Emma Ainda não. Eu nunca comi comida mineira. Not yet. I’ve never eaten food from Minas.

Dona Marta Nunca? Então amanhã você vai jantar aqui. Eu vou fazer um feijão tropeiro! Never? Then tomorrow you’re having dinner here. I’m going to make feijão tropeiro!

Já, ainda não, nunca

Three little words place a past action in your life so far. All three go before the verb.

Portuguese English
já already; ever (in a question)
ainda não not yet
nunca never
  • Você já foi ao Rio? Have you ever been to Rio?
  • Já fui. Yes, I have.
  • Ainda não fui. I haven't been yet.
  • Eu nunca fui. I've never been.

English needs "have" for all of these (have you been, I have never been). Portuguese uses the simple past you learned this week, and nothing else. Short answers are Já., Ainda não. and Nunca.

No extra não with nunca. When nunca comes before the verb, it does the negative work alone: Eu nunca estive em Minas. Don't write eu não nunca estive.

Ago: há and faz

For "ago", put há or faz before the amount of time. They mean the same thing, and you'll hear both every day.

Portuguese English
há dois dias two days ago
faz dois dias two days ago
há uma semana a week ago
faz um mês a month ago
há muito tempo a long time ago
faz pouco tempo a short time ago
  • Eu cheguei há um mês. I arrived a month ago.
  • Ela ligou faz dez minutos. She called ten minutes ago.
  • Nós fomos ao Rio há três dias. We went to Rio three days ago.

Há is said exactly like the word a (the h is silent), so the accent matters in writing. Faz stays the same whatever the amount: faz um ano, faz dois anos, never fazem.

A third way. In conversation you'll also hear the time first and then atrás, which is the closest thing to English word order: Eu cheguei um mês atrás. Use one or the other: há um mês or um mês atrás.

How long? Faz … que, desde, durante, por

Here Portuguese and English part ways, so go slowly.

Something that started in the past and is still true. English says "I have lived here for a month". Portuguese uses the present, because you still live here:

  • Faz um mês que eu moro aqui. I've lived here for a month.
  • Eu moro aqui há um mês. I've lived here for a month. (the same thing, another order)
  • Faz dois anos que ela estuda português. She's been studying Portuguese for two years.
  • Faz quanto tempo que você mora aqui? How long have you lived here?

Desde means "since" and gives the starting point. Again the verb is in the present if it's still true:

  • Eu moro aqui desde março. I've lived here since March.
  • Ela trabalha na agência desde 2020. She's worked at the agency since 2020.
  • Eu não falo inglês desde sexta-feira. I haven't spoken English since Friday.

Something that's over. Use the past, and say how long it lasted. Por and durante both mean "for", and often people leave them out:

  • Quanto tempo você ficou no Rio? How long did you stay in Rio?
  • Eu fiquei lá dois dias. I stayed there two days.
  • Nós ficamos lá durante uma semana. We stayed there for a week.
  • Ele morou em Toronto por dois anos. He lived in Toronto for two years.

Durante also means "during", before a noun: Eu dormi durante o voo. I slept during the flight.

Portuguese English
Faz dois anos que eu moro aqui. I've lived here for two years. (I still do.)
Eu morei lá por dois anos. I lived there for two years. (It's over.)
Eu cheguei há dois anos. I arrived two years ago.

First time, last time

Portuguese English
pela primeira vez for the first time
da última vez the last time
uma vez once
duas vezes twice
muitas vezes many times
É a minha primeira vez. It's my first time.
  • Eu comi feijoada pela primeira vez no Rio. I ate feijoada for the first time in Rio.
  • Da última vez, nós fomos de ônibus. The last time, we went by bus.
  • Eu já estive em Salvador duas vezes. I've been to Salvador twice.
