Listen and read

Listen once without reading. Every time you hear a verb ending in a strong -ei or -ou, something happened in the past. How many can you catch?

Emma Bom dia, Lucas! Você chegou tarde hoje. Good morning, Lucas! You got in late today.

Lucas É verdade. Eu acordei às nove! It’s true. I woke up at nine!

Emma Às nove? Você trabalhou até tarde ontem? At nine? Did you work late yesterday?

Lucas Não. Eu toquei violão até meia-noite. E você? O que você fez ontem à noite? No. I played guitar until midnight. And you? What did you do last night?

Emma Eu jantei na casa da Dona Marta. Ela cozinhou um frango delicioso. I had dinner at Dona Marta’s. She cooked a delicious chicken.

Lucas Que legal! Vocês conversaram em português? How nice! Did you two chat in Portuguese?

Emma Conversamos, sim. Eu falei muito! Depois eu voltei para casa e estudei um pouco. Yes, we did. I talked a lot! Then I went back home and studied a little.

Lucas Olha, eu liguei para a Bia ontem. Ela convidou a gente. Vamos passar o fim de semana no Rio? Listen, I called Bia yesterday. She invited us. Shall we spend the weekend in Rio?

Emma No Rio? Adorei a ideia! Mas as passagens são caras, né? In Rio? I love the idea! But the tickets are expensive, right?

Lucas Não. Eu olhei os preços hoje de manhã e comprei duas passagens de avião. No. I looked at the prices this morning and bought two plane tickets.

Emma Você comprou as passagens? Quanto custaram? You bought the tickets? How much did they cost?

Lucas Eu paguei quatrocentos reais. Barato, né? I paid four hundred reais. Cheap, right?

Carol Lucas! A reunião começou às nove e meia! Lucas! The meeting started at nine thirty!

Lucas Desculpa, Carol! Eu cheguei agora. Sorry, Carol! I just got here.

The simple past of -ar verbs

The simple past (its Portuguese name is pretérito perfeito) is for things that happened and are over: I talked, she arrived, we bought. To make it, take -ar off the verb and add one of four endings.

Portuguese English
eu falei I spoke
você falou you spoke
ele falou / ela falou he spoke / she spoke
nós falamos we spoke
vocês falaram you (all) spoke
eles falaram / elas falaram they spoke

And with a gente, as always, the ele/ela form: A gente falou.

The stress moves to the ending: falei is "fah-LAY" and falou is "fah-LOH". That stress matters. Eu falo (FAH-loo) is "I speak"; ele falou (fah-LOH) is "he spoke".

  • Eu trabalhei ontem. I worked yesterday.
  • Ela comprou duas passagens. She bought two tickets.
  • Nós jantamos em casa. We had dinner at home.
  • Eles viajaram para o Rio. They traveled to Rio.

Portuguese has no word for the English "did". The question is the same sentence with your voice rising, and não goes before the verb as usual. To say "yes", repeat the verb.

  • Você falou com a Carol? Did you talk to Carol?
  • Falei. Yes, I did.
  • Não, eu não falei com ela. No, I didn't talk to her.

Nós falamos: today or yesterday? For nós, the past looks and sounds exactly like the present: nós falamos is both "we speak" and "we spoke". A time word or the conversation tells you which: Nós jantamos cedo todo dia. (every day) and Nós jantamos cedo ontem. (yesterday). With a gente there's no doubt: a gente fala is the present and a gente falou is the past.

Cheguei, fiquei, comecei

Three groups of -ar verbs change one letter in the eu form. The verb isn't irregular: the spelling changes so that the sound stays the same.

Verbs ending in Change Portuguese English
-car c → qu eu fiquei, eu toquei I stayed, I played
-gar g → gu eu cheguei, eu paguei, eu liguei, eu joguei I arrived, I paid, I called, I played
-çar ç → c eu comecei, eu almocei, eu dancei I started, I had lunch, I danced

Why? Before an e, the letter c sounds like "s" and g sounds like "zh". Written ficei, the word would be read "fee-SAY", so Portuguese writes fiquei to keep the "k" sound. In the same way, cheguei keeps the hard "g". And ç is never needed before an e, so começar gives comecei.

Only the eu form changes, because it's the only one whose ending starts with e:

  • Eu cheguei às nove, e a Carol chegou às oito. I arrived at nine, and Carol arrived at eight.
  • Eu fiquei em casa, mas eles ficaram no trabalho. I stayed home, but they stayed at work.
  • Eu comecei ontem. Você começou hoje. I started yesterday. You started today.

When did it happen?

Portuguese English
ontem yesterday
ontem à noite last night
anteontem the day before yesterday
hoje de manhã this morning
na semana passada last week
no mês passado last month
no ano passado last year
no sábado on Saturday
no fim de semana on the weekend
cedo / tarde early / late

Passado agrees with its noun: a semana passada, o mês passado. No sábado can be last Saturday or next Saturday; the verb tells you which: No sábado eu trabalhei. (last Saturday) and No sábado eu vou trabalhar. (next Saturday).

Ten useful -ar verbs

You already know dozens of -ar verbs, and every one of them now works in the past: morar, estudar, comprar, viajar, acordar, jantar, voltar… Here are ten more for telling what you did.

Portuguese English
ligar para to call (on the phone)
conversar to chat, to talk
convidar to invite
visitar to visit
encontrar to meet up with; to find
esperar to wait (for)
mandar to send
olhar to look (at)
descansar to rest
tocar to play (an instrument); to touch

Two phrases to learn whole today. "What did you do?" needs the verb fazer, which is irregular in the past: O que você fez ontem? Learn the question as one piece for now; day 32 gives you the rest of the verb. And when Brazilians like something they've just seen or heard, they say so in the past: Adorei! ("I love it!") and Gostei! ("I like it!").
