Day 30: What did you eat?

Course › Week 5: Yesterday

Day 30 of 90 · about 60 minutes

By the end of today you can:

  • Say what you ate, drank, wrote, opened and decided, with -er and -ir verbs in the past
  • Tell the three sets of past endings apart: falei, comi, abri
  • Ask "Have you eaten yet?" with já, and answer it
  • Order a snack and a drink at a café

Friday, five o'clock. Emma is at a café in Congonhas airport with her suitcase. The flight to Rio leaves soon, and Lucas is nowhere to be seen. Then he comes running.

Listen and read

Listen first without reading. Yesterday's verbs ended in -ei and -ou. Today, listen for the new endings -i, -eu and -iu.

Lucas Emma! Desculpa! Eu perdi o ônibus. Emma! Sorry! I missed the bus.

Emma Tudo bem. Eu saí do trabalho às quatro e cheguei aqui às cinco. That’s OK. I left work at four and got here at five.

Lucas Você já comeu? Have you eaten yet?

Emma Já. Eu comi um pão de queijo e bebi um suco de laranja. E você? Yes. I ate a cheese bread and drank an orange juice. And you?

Lucas Eu não almocei hoje. Só bebi um café de manhã. I didn’t have lunch today. I only drank a coffee this morning.

Emma Por que você não almoçou? Why didn’t you have lunch?

Lucas Porque eu dormi até tarde, e depois a Carol decidiu fazer uma reunião ao meio-dia. Because I slept late, and then Carol decided to have a meeting at noon.

Emma Você precisa comer! O misto-quente aqui é muito bom. You need to eat! The grilled ham and cheese sandwich here is very good.

Lucas Boa ideia. Você recebeu a mensagem da Bia? Good idea. Did you get Bia’s message?

Emma Recebi. Ela escreveu: "Espero vocês no aeroporto às oito." I did. She wrote: "I’ll wait for you at the airport at eight."

Lucas Que bom! Um misto-quente e uma água com gás, por favor. Great! A grilled ham and cheese sandwich and a sparkling water, please.

Emma Lucas, olha! O nosso portão já abriu. Lucas, look! Our gate has already opened.

Lucas Já? Mas eu não comi o meu misto-quente! Already? But I haven’t eaten my sandwich!

Emma Você pode comer no avião. Vamos! You can eat on the plane. Let’s go!

Você entendeu?

  1. Por que o Lucas chegou tarde ao aeroporto?Porque ele dormiu no táxi. Porque ele almoçou com a Carol. Porque ele perdeu o ônibus.
  2. O que a Emma bebeu?Uma água com gás. Um café. Um suco de laranja.
  3. Quem escreveu uma mensagem?A Carol. A Bia. O Lucas.
  4. O Lucas almoçou hoje?Não, ele só bebeu um café. Sim, ele comeu um misto-quente. Sim, ele almoçou com a Emma.

The simple past of -er and -ir verbs

Yesterday you took -ar off and added -ei, -ou, -amos, -aram. Verbs in -er and -ir work the same way with their own endings, and the two groups are almost twins.

Portuguese English
eu comi I ate
você comeu you ate
ele comeu / ela comeu he ate / she ate
nós comemos we ate
vocês comeram you (all) ate
eles comeram / elas comeram they ate
Portuguese English
eu abri I opened
você abriu you opened
ele abriu / ela abriu he opened / she opened
nós abrimos we opened
vocês abriram you (all) opened
eles abriram / elas abriram they opened

Here are the three groups side by side. The stress is always on the ending: comi is "koh-MEE", comeu is "koh-MEH-oo", abriu is "ah-BREE-oo".

-ar (falar) -er (comer) -ir (abrir)
eu falei comi abri
você, ele, ela falou comeu abriu
nós falamos comemos abrimos
vocês, eles, elas falaram comeram abriram
  • Eu bebi um café. I drank a coffee.
  • Ela escreveu uma mensagem. She wrote a message.
  • Nós decidimos viajar. We decided to travel.
  • Eles dormiram no avião. They slept on the plane.

The mistake to watch for: comeu ends in the letters "eu", but it is not the eu form. "I ate" is eu comi; comeu is for você, ele, ela and a gente. Say the pairs out loud until they feel right: eu comi, ele comeu, eu bebi, ela bebeu.

As with -ar verbs, the nós form is the same in the present and the past: nós comemos is "we eat" and "we ate"; nós abrimos is "we open" and "we opened".

Good news about some verbs you know. Several verbs with an odd eu form in the present are perfectly regular in the past:

Portuguese English
eu dormi, ele dormiu I slept, he slept
eu ouvi, ela ouviu I heard, she heard
eu li, ele leu I read, he read
eu saí, ela saiu I left, she left

Sair needs a written accent in three forms, saí, saímos, saíram, to show that the i is said on its own: "sah-EE". One verb that isn't regular in the past is ver (to see): it waits for day 32.

Já: already and yet

Já goes before the verb. In a statement it means "already". In a question it does the work of the English "yet".

  • Você já comeu? Have you eaten yet?
  • Já comi. I've already eaten.
  • O portão já abriu. The gate has already opened.
  • Vocês já decidiram? Have you decided yet?

Notice the English: "have you eaten", "has opened". Portuguese doesn't build the past with "have" here. The simple past, with já when you mean "already" or "yet", covers both "I ate" and "I have eaten".

To answer yes, já is enough by itself: Você já almoçou? — Já. To answer no, use não and the verb: Não, eu não almocei.

At the café

Portuguese English
o pão de queijo cheese bread (small, round and served warm)
o misto-quente grilled ham and cheese sandwich
a coxinha chicken croquette
o salgado savory snack
um pedaço de bolo a piece of cake
o suco de laranja orange juice
a água com gás / a água sem gás sparkling water / still water
o café com leite coffee with milk
o chá tea

And five verbs that go with them, all regular in the past:

Portuguese English
pedir to order, to ask for
perder to miss (a bus, a flight); to lose
receber to receive, to get
escolher to choose
dividir to share, to split

Pedir and perder have an irregular eu form in the present, which you'll meet later in the course. In the past they behave: Eu pedi um chá. I ordered a tea. Eu perdi o ônibus. I missed the bus.
