Course › Week 4: Getting things done
By the end of today you can:
- Describe your day from waking up to going to sleep
- Use sair, dormir, ver, ler and ouvir in the present, including their irregular eu forms
- Say how often you do something: always, usually, sometimes, almost never, never
- Say "before …ing" and "after …ing" with antes de and depois de
Almost a month in, Emma's life in São Paulo has a rhythm. On Sunday afternoon Dona Marta invites her in for coffee and cake, and wants to know everything about it.
Warm-up: do you remember?
Before anything new, pull these out of memory. They come from earlier days, some from yesterday and some from weeks ago. Getting one wrong is useful: it shows you what to look at again.

Dona Marta Emma, você sempre sai tão cedo! A que horas você acorda? Emma, you always leave so early! What time do you wake up?
Emma Eu acordo às seis e meia. Tomo banho, tomo café da manhã e saio de casa às sete e meia. I wake up at six thirty. I take a shower, have breakfast and leave home at seven thirty.
Dona Marta E onde você almoça? And where do you have lunch?
Emma Geralmente eu almoço perto do trabalho, com o Lucas. I usually have lunch near work, with Lucas.
Dona Marta E à noite? Você volta tarde? And in the evening? Do you get back late?
Emma Não, eu volto para casa às sete. Depois de jantar, eu leio um pouco ou vejo uma série. No, I get back home at seven. After having dinner, I read a little or watch a series.
Dona Marta Você não ouve música? Eu ouço rádio todo dia. Don’t you listen to music? I listen to the radio every day.

The day, step by step
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| acordar | ah-kohr-DAR | to wake up |
| tomar banho | toh-MAR BAH-nyoo | to take a shower |
| tomar café da manhã | toh-MAR kah-FEH dah mah-NYAHNG | to have breakfast |
| sair de casa | sah-EER djee KAH-zah | to leave home |
| almoçar | ow-moh-SAR | to have lunch |
| voltar para casa | vohw-TAR PAH-rah KAH-zah | to go back home |
| jantar | zhahn-TAR | to have dinner |
| dormir | dohr-MEER | to sleep, to go to sleep |
| cedo / tarde | SAY-doo / TAR-djee | early / late |
Acordar, tomar, almoçar, voltar and jantar are all regular -ar verbs, so you can already use them.
- Eu acordo às sete. I wake up at seven.
- Ela toma banho de manhã. She takes a shower in the morning.
- A gente almoça ao meio-dia. We have lunch at noon.
- Eles jantam às oito. They have dinner at eight.
Lunch and dinner are verbs. English says "have lunch" and "have dinner". Portuguese has a verb for each: almoçar and jantar. So "I have lunch at one" is Eu almoço à uma., not eu tenho almoço. Breakfast is the exception: it has no verb of its own, so you tomar café da manhã.
Five verbs with a surprise in the eu form
These five are among the most used verbs in the language. Each one is irregular in the eu form. The rest is close to what you'd expect, with a few spellings to notice.
| Verb | eu | você, ele, ela | nós | vocês, eles, elas |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sair (to leave, to go out) | saio | sai | saímos | saem |
| dormir (to sleep) | durmo | dorme | dormimos | dormem |
| ver (to see, to watch) | vejo | vê | vemos | veem |
| ler (to read) | leio | lê | lemos | leem |
| ouvir (to hear, to listen to) | ouço | ouve | ouvimos | ouvem |
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| eu saio | EH-oo SY-oo | I leave, I go out |
| eu durmo | EH-oo DOOR-moo | I sleep |
| eu vejo | EH-oo VAY-zhoo | I see, I watch |
| eu leio | EH-oo LAY-oo | I read |
| eu ouço | EH-oo OH-soo | I hear, I listen |
| ela sai | EH-lah sy | she leaves |
| nós saímos | naws sah-EE-moos | we leave |
| ele vê / ele lê | AY-lee vay / AY-lee lay | he sees / he reads |
| eles veem / eles leem | AY-lees VAY-ayng / AY-lees LAY-ayng | they see / they read |
| ela dorme | EH-lah DAWR-mee | she sleeps |
How to use them:
- Sair de is to leave a place; sair com is to go out with someone; sair alone is to go out. Eu saio do trabalho às seis. Eu saio com os meus amigos na sexta.
- Ver is "to see" and also "to watch": Eu vejo um filme no domingo. You know assistir for "to watch" from day 15; with films, series and TV, both verbs work.
- Ouvir takes the thing directly, with no word for "to": Eu ouço música. I listen to music.
- Dormir is both "to sleep" and "to go to sleep": Eu durmo oito horas. Eu durmo à meia-noite.
Only eu is odd. Durmo has a u, but dorme, dormimos, dormem keep the o. Ouço has a ç, but ouve, ouvimos, ouvem keep the v. When a verb is irregular in the present, the eu form is almost always where it shows.
How often?
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| sempre | SEN-pree | always |
| geralmente | zheh-row-MEN-tchee | usually |
| às vezes | ahs VAY-zees | sometimes |
| quase nunca | KWAH-zee NOON-kah | almost never |
| nunca | NOON-kah | never |
| todo dia | TOH-doo DJEE-ah | every day |
| uma vez por semana | OO-mah vays poor seh-MAH-nah | once a week |
| duas vezes por semana | DOO-ahs VAY-zees poor seh-MAH-nah | twice a week |
Sempre, nunca and quase nunca go right before the verb. Nunca already means "not ever", so it takes the place of não:
- Eu sempre tomo café de manhã. I always have coffee in the morning.
- Ela nunca dorme cedo. She never goes to sleep early.
- Eu quase nunca vejo televisão. I almost never watch television.
Geralmente, às vezes, todo dia and the phrases with por usually go at the start or the end of the sentence:
- Geralmente eu almoço em casa. I usually have lunch at home.
- Às vezes a gente sai à noite. Sometimes we go out at night.
- Eu leio todo dia. I read every day.
- Eu vou à academia duas vezes por semana. I go to the gym twice a week.
Every day or all day? Todo dia (no o) means "every day". O dia todo means "all day long". Eu trabalho todo dia. is "I work every day"; Eu trabalho o dia todo. is "I work all day". You'll also hear todos os dias for "every day".
Before and after
Antes de (before) and depois de (after) are followed by a verb in the infinitive. English uses "-ing" here; Portuguese never does.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| antes de dormir | AHN-tchees djee dohr-MEER | before sleeping, before going to sleep |
| depois de jantar | deh-POYS djee zhahn-TAR | after having dinner |
| antes do almoço | AHN-tchees doo ow-MOH-soo | before lunch |
| depois do trabalho | deh-POYS doo trah-BAH-lyoo | after work |
| depois | deh-POYS | then, afterwards |
- Antes de dormir, eu leio um pouco. Before going to sleep, I read a little.
- Depois de almoçar, ela toma um café. After having lunch, she has a coffee.
- Eu tomo banho antes de sair de casa. I take a shower before leaving home.
Before a noun, de joins the article as usual: antes do almoço, depois da aula, depois das onze. On its own, depois means "then" or "afterwards": Eu janto e depois vejo uma série.
