Listen and read

Listen without reading first. Dona Marta asks about three people: who are they? Then listen again for é and está.

Dona Marta Você está bonita hoje, Emma! O vestido é novo? You look pretty today, Emma! Is the dress new?

Emma É, sim. Obrigada! No domingo eu como na casa dos pais do Lucas. Yes, it is. Thank you! On Sunday I’m eating at Lucas’s parents’ house.

Dona Marta Ah, o Lucas! Como ele é? Ah, Lucas! What’s he like?

Emma Ele é alto e magro. Tem cabelo preto e olhos castanhos. He’s tall and thin. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Dona Marta É bonito? Is he handsome?

Emma É… e é muito simpático. Mas é só um amigo! He is… and he’s very nice. But he’s just a friend!

Dona Marta Hum… E o trabalho? É chato? Hmm… And the job? Is it boring?

Emma Não, o trabalho é legal. Mas hoje está chato: o computador novo está tão lento! No, the job is fun. But today it’s boring: the new computer is so slow!

Dona Marta E a sua chefe? Como ela é? And your boss? What’s she like?

Emma A Carol é ótima. Mas esta semana ela está muito ocupada e um pouco nervosa. Carol is great. But this week she’s very busy and a little on edge.

Dona Marta E você? Está feliz no Brasil? And you? Are you happy in Brazil?

Emma Estou muito feliz. A cidade é grande, mas as pessoas são simpáticas. I’m very happy. The city is big, but the people are friendly.

Dona Marta Que bom! Agora, uma sopa quente. Você está com fome, né? That’s good! Now, some hot soup. You’re hungry, aren’t you?

Emma Estou! A sopa da senhora é tão boa! I am! Your soup is so good!

Did you understand?

  1. What is new?Dona Marta’s kitchen Emma’s dress Emma’s apartment
  2. What color is Lucas’s hair?Black Brown Blond
  3. What does Emma say about her job? It’s easy, but far away. It’s fun, but boring today. It’s boring every day.
  4. How is Carol this week?Very busy and a little on edge Very happy Sick and tired
Show all answers
  1. What is new? Emma’s dress
  2. What color is Lucas’s hair? Black
  3. What does Emma say about her job? It’s fun, but boring today.
  4. How is Carol this week? Very busy and a little on edge

"Your" for a senhora. Emma calls Dona Marta a senhora, the respectful "you" for an older woman. So "your soup" is a sopa da senhora, built just like a sopa dela.

Adjectives match the noun

An adjective is a describing word: tall, new, red. You've been matching adjectives to people since day 2 (brasileiro, brasileira) and day 5 (cansado, cansada). Here is the whole pattern. An adjective copies the gender (masculine or feminine) and the number (one or several) of the noun it describes.

Adjective ends in Masculine Feminine Plural
-o alto alta altos, altas
-e grande grande grandes
a consonant feliz feliz felizes
  • O carro é novo. The car is new.
  • A casa é nova. The house is new.
  • Os carros são novos. The cars are new.
  • As casas são novas. The houses are new.

Most adjectives that don't end in -o have one form for both genders: um amigo inteligente, uma amiga inteligente. (Nationalities are the main exception: inglês, inglesa; francês, francesa.) Their plurals follow the rules you learned for nouns on day 3: feliz → felizes, jovem → jovens, azul → azuis, legal → legais. Two to learn by heart: bom becomes boa in the feminine (bons, boas in the plural), and fácil and difícil become fáceis and difíceis.

Where does it go? Usually after the noun, the opposite of English:

  • um carro vermelho a red car
  • uma cidade grande a big city
  • uma amiga brasileira a Brazilian friend

Colors and nationalities always go after. A few short, very common adjectives often go before the noun: bom, grande, novo, velho. Bom is the one you'll hear before the noun most: um bom amigo, uma boa ideia (a good idea), and of course bom dia and boa noite. With the others, the place can change the meaning a little: uma cidade grande is a big city, while uma grande cidade is a great city; um amigo velho is a friend who is old, while um velho amigo is an old friend, one you've had for years. When you aren't sure, put the adjective after the noun.

The mistake English speakers make: forgetting the adjective when it's far from the noun. In As pessoas no meu trabalho são muito simpáticas. the adjective comes six words after pessoas, and it still has to be feminine and plural.

Words for describing

Portuguese Sounds like English
alto / baixo OW-too / BY-shoo tall / short
grande / pequeno GRAHN-djee / peh-KAY-noo big / small
novo / velho NOH-voo / VEH-lyoo new / old
jovem ZHAW-vayng young
bonito / feio boh-NEE-too / FAY-oo pretty, handsome / ugly
lindo LEEN-doo beautiful
bom, boa / ruim bohng, BOH-ah / hoo-EENG good / bad
magro MAH-groo thin
simpático / chato seem-PAH-tchee-koo / SHAH-too nice, friendly / boring, annoying
legal leh-GOW nice, cool, fun
inteligente een-teh-lee-ZHEN-tchee intelligent
fácil / difícil FAH-seew / djee-FEE-seew easy / hard
rápido / lento HAH-pee-doo / LEN-too fast / slow
quente / frio KEN-tchee / FREE-oo hot / cold
limpo / sujo LEEM-poo / SOO-zhoo clean / dirty

To make an adjective stronger or weaker, put one of these little words in front of it:

Portuguese Sounds like English
muito caro MWEEN-too KAH-roo very expensive
bem caro bayng KAH-roo really expensive, quite expensive
um pouco caro oong POH-koo KAH-roo a little expensive
tão caro towng KAH-roo so expensive

Before an adjective, these words never change: Ela é muito alta. (not muita). As casas são tão bonitas! The houses are so pretty!

Colors, hair and eyes

Portuguese Sounds like English
branco BRAHN-koo white
preto PRAY-too black
vermelho vehr-MAY-lyoo red
azul ah-ZOOW blue
verde VAYR-djee green
amarelo ah-mah-REH-loo yellow
marrom mah-HOHNG brown
cinza SEEN-zah gray
laranja lah-RAHN-zhah orange
rosa HAW-zah pink

Colors are adjectives, so they match too: uma bolsa preta, canetas vermelhas, olhos azuis, sapatos marrons (brown shoes). The exceptions are cinza, laranja and rosa, which are really the names of things (ash, orange, rose) and stay the same: uma bolsa rosa, carros cinza.

To ask about a color: De que cor é o seu carro? What color is your car? — É branco. It's white.

For hair and eyes, use ter, as in English "she has blue eyes":

Portuguese Sounds like English
o cabelo oo kah-BAY-loo hair
os olhos oos AW-lyoos eyes
castanho kahs-TAH-nyoo brown (hair and eyes)
loiro LOY-roo blond
ruivo HOOY-voo red (hair)
curto / comprido KOOR-too / kohm-PREE-doo short / long
liso / cacheado LEE-zoo / kah-shee-AH-doo straight / curly
  • Ele tem cabelo preto e curto. He has short black hair.
  • Ela tem olhos verdes. She has green eyes.
  • A minha irmã tem cabelo loiro e comprido. My sister has long blond hair.

Cabelo is singular, like "hair", and its adjectives are singular too. Brown hair and brown eyes are castanho, not marrom. And notice curto and baixo: hair or a movie is curto; a person is baixo.

Ser or estar?

On day 5 you saw that Portuguese has two verbs for "to be". With adjectives, the choice changes what you mean:

  • ser says what a person or thing is like: the description you'd give of them any day.
  • estar says how they are right now: today, this week, in this moment. It's often something that has changed, or something you've just noticed.
Portuguese Sounds like English
A Emma é bonita. ah EH-mah eh boh-NEE-tah Emma is pretty. (she's a pretty woman)
A Emma está bonita. ah EH-mah ees-TAH boh-NEE-tah Emma looks pretty. (today, in that dress)
O trabalho é chato. oo trah-BAH-lyoo eh SHAH-too The job is boring. (it's a boring job)
O trabalho está chato. oo trah-BAH-lyoo ees-TAH SHAH-too Work is boring. (today, or these days)
A sopa é boa. ah SOH-pah eh BOH-ah The soup is good. (it's a good recipe)
A sopa está boa. ah SOH-pah ees-TAH BOH-ah The soup is good. (this bowl, now)

The same goes for questions. Como ele é? asks "What's he like?": Ele é alto e simpático. Como ele está? asks "How is he?": Ele está bem. Está um pouco cansado.

Some adjectives are almost always about right now, so they go with estar: cansado, doente, ocupado, nervoso. Others describe what someone is like, so they go with ser: alto, inteligente, brasileiro, jovem.

"You look great!" English needs a different verb, "look", to compliment someone on how they are today. Portuguese just uses estar: Você está linda! You look beautiful! A casa está tão limpa! The house looks so clean!

Not "permanent" and "temporary". You may read that ser is for permanent things and estar for temporary ones. It's a useful first idea, but it breaks down: nobody is young forever, and still it's Ele é jovem., because that's what he's like. "What it's like" against "how it is right now" works much better.
