Every word is masculine or feminine

In Portuguese every noun (a word for a thing, a person or an idea) is either masculine or feminine. This is a grammar label, not a fact about the thing: a book is masculine and a table is feminine for no reason you can see. The label matters because the words around the noun change to match it, starting with "the": o for masculine words and a for feminine ones.

Portuguese Sounds like English
o celular oo seh-loo-LAR the cell phone
o livro oo LEE-vroo the book
o caderno oo kah-DEHR-noo the notebook
o computador oo kohng-poo-tah-DOHR the computer
o escritório oo ees-kree-TAW-ree-oo the office
o dicionário oo djee-see-oh-NAH-ree-oo the dictionary
o cartão oo kar-TOWNG the card
o papel oo pah-PEHW the paper
o presente oo preh-ZEN-tchee the present, the gift
a chave ah SHAH-vee the key
a mesa ah MAY-zah the table, the desk
a caneta ah kah-NAY-tah the pen
a bolsa ah BOHW-sah the bag, the purse
a mochila ah moh-SHEE-lah the backpack
a cadeira ah kah-DAY-rah the chair
a caneca ah kah-NEH-kah the mug
a carteira ah kar-TAY-rah the wallet
a porta ah PAWR-tah the door

Learn every new word with its o or a. Don't memorize chave = key. Memorize a chave = the key. Say the two words together every time, and the gender comes for free.

Clues to the gender

You can often tell from the ending.

Clue Portuguese Sounds like English
ends in -o: masculine o livro oo LEE-vroo the book
ends in -a: feminine a caneta ah kah-NAY-tah the pen
ends in -ção: feminine a informação ah een-for-mah-SOWNG the information
ends in -dade: feminine a cidade ah see-DAH-djee the city
ends in -ema: masculine o problema oo proh-BLAY-mah the problem
  • The -ema words are the trap: they end in -a but are masculine. o problema, o sistema (the system). So is o dia (the day), which is why it's bom dia and not boa dia.
  • Words that end in -e or in a consonant can be either: o presente, a chave, o papel, o celular. For these, the article is the only clue, which is one more reason to learn it with the word.
  • With people, the gender follows the person: o amigo is a male friend and a amiga a female friend, o homem (the man) and a mulher (the woman). Some words only change their article: o colega and a colega, o estudante and a estudante.

A, an and some

"A" or "an" is um for masculine words and uma for feminine ones. Their plurals, uns and umas, mean "some".

Portuguese Sounds like English
um livro oong LEE-vroo a book
uma caneta OO-mah kah-NAY-tah a pen
uns livros oongs LEE-vroos some books
umas canetas OO-mahs kah-NAY-tahs some pens

To ask what something is, say O que é isso? The answer starts with É ("it is"). Portuguese has no separate word for "it" here.

  • O que é isso? What's that?
  • É um caderno. It's a notebook.
  • É uma chave. It's a key.

Remember day 2: jobs take no um or uma after ser. Ela é professora. is "She's a teacher." Things do take it: É uma caneta.

More than one

"The" has plural forms too: os for masculine words and as for feminine ones. The noun gets a plural ending, and the ending depends on its last letter.

Rule One Portuguese Sounds like English
ends in a vowel: add -s o livro os livros oos LEE-vroos the books
a chave as chaves ahs SHAH-vees the keys
ends in -r or -z: add -es o computador os computadores oos kohng-poo-tah-DOH-rees the computers
a mulher as mulheres ahs moo-LYEH-rees the women
-ão becomes -ões o cartão os cartões oos kar-TOYNGS the cards
a informação as informações ahz een-for-mah-SOYNGS the information (pieces of it)
-l becomes -is o papel os papéis oos pah-PEH-ees the papers
o hotel os hotéis ooz oh-TEH-ees the hotels
-m becomes -ns o homem os homens ooz AW-mayngs the men

Four things to know:

  • Most words in -ão make -ões, but a few common ones don't: a mão (the hand) becomes as mãos, and o pão (the bread roll) becomes os pães. Learn those when you meet them.
  • Words that already end in -s add -es when the last syllable is the stressed one, and lose their accent mark: o inglês (the Englishman) becomes os ingleses. Otherwise they don't change at all: o ônibus (the bus), os ônibus (the buses).
  • A group of men and women, or of masculine and feminine things, is masculine: os amigos can be male friends or a mixed group.
  • A few words are always plural, as in English: os óculos are "the glasses".

Describing words match the noun, just as nationalities matched the person on day 2. With a feminine noun, -o becomes -a; with a plural noun, add -s. The describing word usually comes after the noun.

Portuguese Sounds like English
novo / nova NOH-voo / NAW-vah new
pequeno / pequena peh-KAY-noo / peh-KAY-nah small
grande GRAHN-djee big
bom / boa bohng / BOH-ah good
  • O livro é novo. The book is new.
  • A caneca é nova. The mug is new.
  • Os livros são novos. The books are new.
  • As chaves são pequenas. The keys are small.
  • É um computador novo. It's a new computer.

This is…

To show or introduce something, use este é with a masculine word and esta é with a feminine one. For more than one, it's estes são and estas são.

Portuguese Sounds like English
Este é o escritório. AYS-tchee eh oo ees-kree-TAW-ree-oo This is the office.
Esta é a mesa. EHS-tah eh ah MAY-zah This is the desk.
Estes são os livros. AYS-tchees sowng oos LEE-vroos These are the books.
Estas são as chaves. EHS-tahs sowng ahs SHAH-vees These are the keys.

It works for people too. That's how Lucas introduced Emma yesterday: Carol, esta é a Emma. For a man: Este é o Lucas.

Why isso in the question? When you ask O que é isso? you don't know what the thing is yet, so you can't know its gender. Isso is the word for a thing you haven't named, and it never changes. Brazilians use it for "this" and for "that". Once you name the thing, switch to este or esta. (You'll also hear esse and essa a lot. Day 24 sorts all of these out.)
