By the end of today you can:
- Say who you are, where you're from and what you do
- Use the words for I, you, he, she, we and they
- Use all four present forms of ser (to be)
- Ask someone their name and where they're from
It's Emma's first morning at the agency. Lucas introduces her to their boss, Carol.
Warm-up: do you remember?
Before anything new, pull these out of memory. They come from earlier days, some from yesterday and some from weeks ago. Getting one wrong is useful: it shows you what to look at again.
- Good morning!______
- You need to get past someone on the bus.Com licença. Tudo bem. Tchau.

Listen and read
Listen to the whole conversation once without looking at the English. How many times do you hear sou or é?
Lucas Carol, esta é a Emma. Carol, this is Emma.
Carol Oi, Emma! Eu sou a Carol. Prazer! Hi, Emma! I’m Carol. Nice to meet you!
Emma Prazer, Carol! Nice to meet you, Carol!
Carol Você é americana? Are you American?
Emma Não, eu sou canadense. Eu sou de Toronto. No, I’m Canadian. I’m from Toronto.
Carol Que legal! Eu sou de Curitiba. E o Lucas é de São Paulo. How cool! I’m from Curitiba. And Lucas is from São Paulo.
Emma Vocês são programadores? Are you programmers?
Lucas Eu sou programador. A Carol é a chefe! I’m a programmer. Carol is the boss!
Carol E você é designer, né? And you’re a designer, right?
Emma Sou, sim. Yes, I am.
Carol Ótimo. Nós somos uma equipe pequena, mas muito boa. Bem-vinda! Great. We’re a small team, but a very good one. Welcome!

Who's who
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| eu | EH-oo | I |
| você | voh-SAY | you |
| ele | AY-lee | he |
| ela | EH-lah | she |
| nós | naws | we |
| vocês | voh-SAYS | you (two or more people) |
| eles | AY-lees | they (men, or a mixed group) |
| elas | EH-lahs | they (women only) |
What about tu? You may have seen tu for "you" in other courses. In most of Brazil people say você, and it's understood everywhere, so that's what this course teaches. It makes verbs easier too: você uses the same verb form as ele and ela.
Ser: to be
Ser is the verb for who or what someone is: name, nationality, origin and job. It has just four forms in the present.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| eu sou | EH-oo soh | I am |
| você é | voh-SAY eh | you are |
| ele é / ela é | AY-lee eh / EH-lah eh | he is / she is |
| nós somos | naws SOH-moos | we are |
| vocês são | voh-SAYS sowng | you (all) are |
| eles são / elas são | AY-lees sowng / EH-lahs sowng | they are |
- Eu sou a Emma. I'm Emma.
- Ele é o Lucas. He's Lucas.
- Nós somos amigos. We're friends.
- Elas são brasileiras. They're Brazilian.
Two things English speakers find odd, and both are normal:
- Brazilians put o or a ("the") before a first name: o Lucas, a Emma. It sounds friendly, not strange.
- You can drop eu and nós, because the verb already shows who it is: Sou de Toronto. means the same as Eu sou de Toronto.
Questions and "not"
A question uses exactly the same words as a statement. Just let your voice rise at the end.
- Você é brasileiro. You're Brazilian.
- Você é brasileiro? Are you Brazilian?
To say "not", put não right before the verb.
- Eu não sou americana. I'm not American.
- Ele não é de São Paulo. He isn't from São Paulo.
To answer "yes", Brazilians usually repeat the verb instead of just saying sim: Você é designer? — Sou. or Sou, sim.
Where are you from?
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| De onde você é? | djee OHN-djee voh-SAY eh | Where are you from? |
| Eu sou de Toronto. | EH-oo soh djee toh-ROHN-too | I'm from Toronto. |
| Eu sou do Brasil. | EH-oo soh doo brah-ZEEW | I'm from Brazil. |
| Eu sou do Canadá. | EH-oo soh doo kah-nah-DAH | I'm from Canada. |
| Eu sou dos Estados Unidos. | EH-oo soh dooz ees-TAH-dooz oo-NEE-doos | I'm from the United States. |
| Eu sou da Inglaterra. | EH-oo soh dah een-glah-TEH-hah | I'm from England. |
| Qual é o seu nome? | kwow eh oo SEH-oo NOH-mee | What's your name? |
| Meu nome é Emma. | MEH-oo NOH-mee eh EH-mah | My name is Emma. |
Use plain de with cities: de Toronto, de São Paulo. Most countries need "the", and de joins up with it: do Brasil, da Inglaterra, dos Estados Unidos. For now, learn your own country as a whole phrase. Day 10 explains how these combinations work.
Nationalities and jobs
Words that describe a person change their ending. As a rule, -o is for a man and -a for a woman. Words ending in -e stay the same.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| brasileiro / brasileira | brah-zee-LAY-roo / brah-zee-LAY-rah | Brazilian |
| americano / americana | ah-meh-ree-KAH-noo / ah-meh-ree-KAH-nah | American |
| canadense | kah-nah-DEN-see | Canadian |
| inglês / inglesa | een-GLAYS / een-GLAY-zah | English |
| professor / professora | proh-feh-SOHR / proh-feh-SOH-rah | teacher |
| programador / programadora | proh-grah-mah-DOHR / proh-grah-mah-DOH-rah | programmer |
| estudante | ees-too-DAHN-tchee | student |
| médico / médica | MEH-djee-koo / MEH-djee-kah | doctor |
Notice there's no "a" or "an" before a job: Eu sou professora. is "I'm a teacher."
