Remember that em joins the article to say "in the": na sala, no quarto, na cozinha, no banheiro. "At home" has no article at all: em casa.
Tem: there is, there are
To say that something exists somewhere, Brazilians use tem. It's the ele form of ter, used with no subject, and it never changes: one thing or twenty, it's always tem.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Tem um sofá na sala. | tayng oong soh-FAH nah SAH-lah | There's a sofa in the living room. |
| Tem duas cadeiras. | tayng DOO-ahs kah-DAY-rahs | There are two chairs. |
| Não tem televisão. | nowng tayng teh-leh-vee-ZOWNG | There's no television. |
| Tem um mercado aqui perto? | tayng oong mehr-KAH-doo ah-KEE PEHR-too | Is there a market near here? |
You answer the usual way, with the verb: Tem café? Is there any coffee? — Tem. Yes, there is. — Não tem. No, there isn't.
The same word still means "has". The difference is whether there's someone doing the having:
- A Emma tem um sofá. Emma has a sofa.
- Tem um sofá na sala. There's a sofa in the living room.
The formal version is há. In newspapers, books and signs you'll read Há um mercado no bairro. It means exactly the same as Tem um mercado no bairro. In conversation, tem is what everyone says, so that's the one to use when you speak.
Tem or está? Use tem to say that something exists, usually with um or uma: Tem uma padaria na esquina. There's a bakery on the corner. Use está or fica to say where a thing you both already know about is, with o or a: A padaria fica na esquina. The bakery is on the corner.
Where exactly?
These phrases say where one thing is compared with another.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| em cima de | ayng SEE-mah djee | on, on top of |
| embaixo de | em-BY-shoo djee | under |
| ao lado de | ow LAH-doo djee | next to |
| na frente de | nah FREN-tchee djee | in front of, across from |
| atrás de | ah-TRAHS djee | behind |
| dentro de | DEN-troo djee | in, inside |
| perto de | PEHR-too djee | near |
| longe de | LOHN-zhee djee | far from |
| entre | EN-tree | between |
Almost all of them end in de, and de joins the article that follows, exactly as on day 10: do, da, dos, das.
- O café está em cima da mesa. The coffee is on the table.
- A bolsa está embaixo da cadeira. The bag is under the chair.
- A cozinha fica ao lado do quarto. The kitchen is next to the bedroom.
- O carro está na frente do prédio. The car is in front of the building.
- As xícaras estão dentro do armário. The cups are in the cupboard.
- Eu moro perto dos meus pais. I live near my parents.
Two details:
- Entre has no de: O banheiro fica entre a cozinha e o quarto.
- When nothing comes after, the de disappears: O metrô fica perto. The metro is close. Eles moram longe. They live far away.
The mistake English speakers make: leaving out the de, or forgetting to join it. It's em cima da mesa, never em cima a mesa or em cima de a mesa. Say the whole chunk together: em-cima-da, ao-lado-do, perto-da.
Ficar, and here and there
Ficar is a regular -ar verb: eu fico, você fica, nós ficamos, eles ficam. It has two everyday meanings.
For places that don't move (a room, a building, a street, a city), ficar means to be located. You already know it from the question Onde fica…?
- Onde fica o banheiro? Where's the bathroom?
- A padaria fica na esquina. The bakery is on the corner.
- Os quartos ficam ao lado da sala. The bedrooms are next to the living room.
For things and people that move around (keys, a phone, your sister), use estar: As chaves estão em cima da mesa. A Emma está na cozinha.
With people, ficar means to stay: No domingo eu fico em casa. On Sunday I stay home. O Seu Zé fica na portaria. Seu Zé stays at the front desk.
English has "here" and "there". Portuguese has four words, and the choice depends on who the place is close to.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| aqui | ah-KEE | here (where I am) |
| aí | ah-EE | there (where you are) |
| ali | ah-LEE | over there (close enough to point at) |
| lá | lah | there (far away, or out of sight) |
- As suas chaves estão aqui. Your keys are here.
- Tem café aí? Is there coffee there (where you are)?
- O banheiro fica ali. The bathroom is over there.
- Os meus pais moram lá no Canadá. My parents live over there in Canada.
They combine with other place words: aqui perto near here, ali na frente over there in front, lá embaixo down there.
