Good to know

  • Perguntar or pedir? Perguntar is to ask a question; pedir is to ask for something: Perguntei o preço. (I asked the price.) / Pedi um café. (I asked for a coffee.)
  • Fazer uma pergunta is "to ask a question": Posso fazer uma pergunta? (Can I ask a question?)
  • Perguntar por alguém means "to ask about someone": Meus pais perguntaram por você. (My parents asked about you.)
  • The person you ask takes a, or para in everyday speech: Preciso perguntar para o meu chefe. (I need to ask my boss.)
