Good to know

  • No preposition: tentar goes straight to the next verb: Ela tentou te ligar. (She tried to call you.)
  • Tentar or experimentar? To try food or try on clothes, use experimentar: Posso experimentar? (Can I try it on? / Can I taste it?)
  • Não custa tentar means "It doesn't hurt to try": Não sei se vai dar certo, mas não custa tentar. (I don't know if it'll work, but it doesn't hurt to try.)
