Good to know

  • Murmurar or sussurrar? Murmurar is speaking low and not clearly, often to yourself or to complain. Sussurrar is whispering on purpose so that others don't hear: Ele murmurou alguma coisa. (He muttered something.) Ela sussurrou um segredo. (She whispered a secret.)
  • Complaining: for someone who grumbles all the time, the everyday verb is resmungar: Ele vive resmungando. (He's always grumbling.)
  • O murmúrio is the noun, a murmur: the low sound of voices, or of water and wind.
