Good to know

  • Assobiar or assoviar? Both spellings are correct and mean the same thing; you will see and hear both in Brazil.
  • With your mouth only: blowing a whistle (um apito) is apitar: O juiz apitou o fim do jogo. (The referee blew the whistle for the end of the game.)
  • Assobiar uma música is "to whistle a tune", with no preposition. O assobio is the noun: Eu ouvi um assobio. (I heard a whistle.)
