  • Two uses: something can sink by itself, or you can sink it: O barco afundou. (The boat sank.) A tempestade afundou o barco. (The storm sank the boat.)
  • Figurative: people and companies can afundar too: Ele afundou em dívidas. (He sank into debt.)
  • Related words: afundar comes from fundo (deep; the bottom). The opposite is boiar (to float).
