  • React like a good listener: Nossa! Sério? Que absurdo! Ainda bem! Não acredito!
  • Say what almost happened, what was about to happen and how it all ended up

Listen and read

Listen to the whole story first. Notice how Emma and Rafa keep it going with short reactions, and listen for the moments when Lucas jumps from the past into the present.

Lucas Gente, vocês não vão acreditar no que me aconteceu no sábado. Guys, you won’t believe what happened to me on Saturday.

Rafa Ih, lá vem história. Conta! Uh-oh, here comes a story. Tell us!

Lucas Eu tinha comprado ingresso para um show e, claro, estava atrasado. Aí eu pego um táxi, chego lá correndo, vou pegar a carteira e… cadê? Sumiu! I had bought a ticket for a concert and, of course, I was late. So I grab a taxi, I get there in a rush, I go to take out my wallet and… where is it? Gone!

Emma Nossa! Sério? Wow! Seriously?

Lucas Sério. Eu tinha deixado a carteira no táxi, com o ingresso dentro. Quase chorei. Seriously. I had left my wallet in the taxi, with the ticket inside. I almost cried.

Rafa Que azar! E daí, o que você fez? What bad luck! And then, what did you do?

Lucas Eu estava para ir embora quando o meu celular tocou. Era o motorista! Ele tinha encontrado a carteira, com o meu cartão da agência dentro. I was about to leave when my phone rang. It was the driver! He had found the wallet, with my business card from the agency inside.

Emma Não acredito! Ainda bem! I don’t believe it! Thank goodness!

Lucas Dez minutos depois ele voltou e me entregou tudo. Eu quis dar um dinheiro para ele, mas ele não aceitou. Só sorriu e disse: "Hoje foi você, amanhã posso ser eu." Ten minutes later he came back and handed me everything. I tried to give him some money, but he wouldn’t take it. He just smiled and said, "Today it was you; tomorrow it could be me."

Rafa Que cara legal! E o show, foi bom? What a nice guy! And the concert, was it good?

Lucas Calma. Aí eu chego na porta, todo feliz, mostro o ingresso, e o segurança começa a rir. O show era no domingo! Hold on. So I get to the door, all happy, I show the ticket, and the security guard starts laughing. The concert was on Sunday!

Emma Mentira! No way!

Rafa Que absurdo! Só você mesmo, Lucas. That’s ridiculous! Only you, Lucas.

Lucas Pois é. Eu ri tanto que quase caí. No final, acabei jantando sozinho num bar ali perto. I know. I laughed so hard I almost fell over. In the end, I ended up having dinner alone at a bar nearby.

Emma E no domingo, você conseguiu chegar na hora? And on Sunday, did you manage to get there on time?

Lucas Claro que não. Mas dessa vez eu não perdi nada! Of course not. But this time I didn’t lose anything!

Você entendeu?

  1. O que sumiu?O violão do Lucas. O celular do Lucas. A carteira do Lucas.
  2. Onde estava a carteira?Na agência. No táxi. No bar.
  3. Quem ligou para o Lucas?O motorista do táxi. O Rafa. O segurança do show.
  4. Por que o segurança riu?Porque o Lucas não tinha dinheiro. Porque o Lucas caiu na porta. Porque o show era no dia seguinte.

Each past tense has a job

Since week 7 you've known the pieces. A good story uses all of them, and each one does something different.

The job The tense From Lucas's story
Set the scene: what was going on, how things were imperfect Eu estava atrasado. O show era no domingo.
Say what happened next simple past O meu celular tocou. Ele voltou e me entregou tudo.
Go back to something earlier tinha + participle Eu tinha deixado a carteira no táxi.
An action in progress, cut by an event estava + gerund, then simple past Eu estava saindo quando o celular tocou.

When you quote someone's exact words, as Lucas does with the driver, nothing changes inside the quotation marks: Ele disse: "Hoje foi você, amanhã posso ser eu." If you report it instead, the tenses shift as on day 68: Ele disse que naquele dia tinha sido eu… In a story told out loud, the direct quote is nearly always livelier.

Aí, daí and the present that tells the past

Aí is the spoken "and then" or "so". You met it on days 47 and 74, and in a story it is the glue between events: Aí eu peguei um táxi. Aí o celular tocou. Daí does the same job and is especially common in the South and in São Paulo.

As a question, E daí? asks for the next part of the story: "And then?" Said flatly, the same two words mean "So what?", so let your voice show that you're curious. E aí? works the same way, and you also know it as the greeting "What's up?"

Now look at what Lucas does at the two most exciting moments:

  • Aí eu pego um táxi, chego lá correndo…
  • Aí eu chego na porta, mostro o ingresso, e o segurança começa a rir.

These are present-tense verbs for things that happened last Saturday. It puts the listener inside the scene, and English speakers do it too ("So I walk in, and this guy says…"). The background stays in the past (estava atrasado, era no domingo), and Lucas returns to the past whenever he likes.

For speaking, not for writing. Aí, daí and the storytelling present belong to conversation and to messages between friends. In a written account (an email to your landlord, a report at work) use então, depois, em seguida and keep the verbs in the past.

A story needs a listener

In Brazil, listening in silence can look like a lack of interest. Short reactions tell the speaker to keep going.

Portuguese English
Nossa! Wow!
Sério? Seriously?
Mentira! No way! (literally "a lie!")
Não acredito! I don't believe it!
Que absurdo! That's outrageous! / That's ridiculous!
Ainda bem! Thank goodness!
Que sorte! / Que azar! What luck! / What bad luck!
Que horror! How awful!
Coitado! / Coitada! Poor thing!
Conta! Tell me!
E daí? / E aí? And then?
Pois é. Yeah, I know. / That's how it is.

Mentira! doesn't accuse anyone of lying. It only means the news is hard to believe. Coitado agrees with the person you feel sorry for: Coitado do Lucas! Coitada da Emma!

Almost, about to, ended up

Portuguese English
Quase caí. I almost fell.
Quase perdemos o voo. We almost missed the flight.

A gente acabou ficando em casa. We ended up staying home.
  • Quase + simple past: something nearly happened and didn't. The word order is like English: quase goes before the verb.
  • Estar para + infinitive: on the point of doing something. In a story it is usually estava para… quando…
  • Acabar + gerund (day 75): how things turned out, often not as planned. Don't mix it up with acabar de + infinitive, "to have just": Acabei de jantar. I've just had dinner. Acabei jantando sozinho. I ended up having dinner alone.

Rir, sorrir, sumir

Three verbs for a night out and the story about it afterwards: rir (to laugh), sorrir (to smile) and sumir (to disappear, to vanish).
