Course › Week 12: Portuguese in the real world
By the end of today you can:
- Make and answer a phone call, and deal with a call that drops
- Explain what's wrong: não está funcionando, veio errado, fui cobrada duas vezes
- Ask for a solution, from the friendly Tem como…? to the firm Eu gostaria que vocês resolvessem…
- Name the documents and bills that every bank, landlord and company asks about
Staying in Brazil means paperwork: a bank account, a one-year rental contract with Dona Marta, a CPF number on everything. And on the very evening Emma sits down to deal with it all, her internet stops working. The next afternoon she calls the company.
Warm-up: do you remember?

Listen and read
Listen first without reading. What are Emma's two problems, and what does she get the company to do about each one?
Atendente Central de atendimento, boa tarde. Com quem eu falo? Customer service, good afternoon. Who am I speaking with?
Emma Boa tarde. Aqui é a Emma Clarke. Estou ligando porque a minha internet não está funcionando desde ontem. Good afternoon. This is Emma Clarke. I’m calling because my internet hasn’t been working since yesterday.
Atendente Sinto muito, senhora. Pode me informar o número do seu CPF, por favor? I’m very sorry, ma’am. Can you give me your CPF number, please?
Emma Só um momento, vou pegar o documento. Alô? O senhor está me ouvindo? Just a moment, I’ll get the document. Hello? Can you hear me?
A ligação caiu. Emma liga de novo e espera dez minutos até alguém atender. The call dropped. Emma calls again and waits ten minutes until someone answers.
Atendente Obrigado por aguardar. Já encontrei o seu cadastro. A senhora já tentou desligar e ligar o aparelho? Thank you for holding. I’ve found your account. Have you tried turning the device off and on?
Emma Já tentei três vezes e não consegui nada. E tem outro problema: fui cobrada duas vezes este mês. I’ve tried three times and got nowhere. And there’s another problem: I was charged twice this month.
Atendente Vou verificar. É verdade, a senhora recebeu duas cobranças. Foi um erro do sistema. Let me check. That’s right, you received two charges. It was a system error.
Emma Eu gostaria que vocês resolvessem isso hoje e devolvessem o valor que eu paguei a mais. I would like you to sort this out today and refund the amount I overpaid.
Atendente O valor vai ser devolvido na próxima fatura. E um técnico pode ir à sua casa amanhã de manhã. The amount will be refunded on your next bill. And a technician can go to your home tomorrow morning.
Emma De manhã eu estou no trabalho. Tem como ele vir depois das seis? In the morning I’m at work. Is there any way he can come after six?

Emma Pode falar. Pronto, já anotei. Obrigada pela ajuda. Go ahead. There, I’ve written it down. Thank you for your help.

On the phone
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Alô? | Hello? (only on the phone) |
| Quem fala? / Com quem eu falo? | Who's speaking? / Who am I speaking with? |
| Aqui é a Emma. | This is Emma. |
| Eu gostaria de falar com o gerente. | I would like to speak to the manager. |
| Só um momento. / Um momentinho. | Just a moment. |
| Pode aguardar na linha? | Can you hold? |
| Vou transferir a sua ligação. | I'll transfer your call. |
| A ligação caiu. | The call dropped. |
| A ligação está ruim. | It's a bad line. |
| Não estou ouvindo bem. | I can't hear you well. |
| Quer deixar um recado? | Would you like to leave a message? |
| Eu ligo de novo mais tarde. | I'll call again later. |
The verbs to remember are ligar para (to call someone), atender (to answer the phone, and also to serve a customer) and desligar (to hang up; also to turn something off). The call itself is a ligação.
In Portuguese, calls, connections and systems "fall": A ligação caiu. A internet caiu. O sistema caiu. You will hear that last one at banks and government offices as the reason nothing can be done right now.
Always ask for the protocolo. Every call to a phone company, a bank or a utility produces a reference number, o número do protocolo. Write it down. If the problem isn't solved, it proves that you called, and the next person you speak to can look up what was promised.
Explaining a problem
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Não está funcionando. | It isn't working. |
| Parou de funcionar. | It stopped working. |
| Está quebrado. / Está quebrada. | It's broken. |
| Veio errado. / Veio quebrado. | It arrived wrong. / It arrived broken. |
| Ainda não chegou. | It hasn't arrived yet. |
| Está atrasado. | It's late. |
| Fui cobrado duas vezes. / Fui cobrada duas vezes. | I was charged twice. |
| O valor está errado. | The amount is wrong. |
| Não recebi o boleto. | I didn't receive the payment slip. |
| Está vazando água. | Water is leaking. |
| Não consigo entrar na minha conta. | I can't get into my account. |
Two patterns from earlier days do most of the work.
Vir + a description says what state something arrived in. Both words agree with the thing: O pedido veio errado. A fatura veio errada. As cadeiras vieram quebradas.
The passive of day 72 says what was done to you, and the participle agrees with you: Lucas says Fui cobrado duas vezes. and Emma says Fui cobrada duas vezes.
For "I can't" when you have tried and failed, use conseguir (day 38), not poder: Não consegui falar com ninguém. I couldn't get through to anyone. Você conseguiu resolver? Did you manage to sort it out?
Asking for a solution
Here are five ways to ask, from the lightest to the firmest.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Tem como trocar o horário? | Is there a way to change the time? |
| Seria possível mandar um técnico hoje? | Would it be possible to send a technician today? |
| Eu gostaria que vocês resolvessem isso hoje. | I would like you to sort this out today. |
| Preciso que vocês devolvam o dinheiro. | I need you to refund the money. |
| Quero fazer uma reclamação. | I want to make a complaint. |
Tem como…? (literally "does it have how…?") is the everyday way to ask whether something can be done. It is followed by an infinitive, and the answers are Tem, sim. and Não tem como. When the infinitive has its own subject, it is the personal infinitive of day 71: Tem como vocês mandarem outro? Is there a way for you to send another one?
Look at the verbs after que. Eu gostaria que is in the conditional, so it takes the past subjunctive (day 65): resolvessem. Preciso que and peço que are in the present, so they take the present subjunctive (day 57): devolvam, anote. In very polite or official Portuguese, Peço que… is a courteous way to give an instruction: Peço que a senhora aguarde um momento.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| resolver | to solve, to sort out |
| consertar | to fix, to repair |
| trocar | to exchange, to replace |
| devolver | to return, to refund |
| cancelar | to cancel |
| cobrar | to charge |
| reclamar de | to complain about |
| o reembolso | the refund |
| a reclamação | the complaint |
Firm and polite at the same time. A complaint in Brazil goes better when it stays courteous: o senhor / a senhora, por favor, gostaria. The person on the phone almost never caused the problem. Being firm means being specific about what you want and by when: Eu gostaria que o valor fosse devolvido até sexta-feira.
The bank, the rent and the paperwork
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| o CPF | the personal taxpayer number, asked for everywhere |
| o RG / a identidade | the ID card |
| o comprovante de residência | proof of address (a recent bill in your name) |
| o contrato de aluguel | the rental contract |
| o aluguel | the rent |
| o inquilino / a inquilina | the tenant |
| o proprietário / a proprietária | the owner, the landlord |
| o boleto | a payment slip with a barcode |
| a fatura | the bill, the statement (card, phone, internet) |
| a conta | the bill; the account |
| abrir uma conta | to open an account |
| a agência | the (bank) branch |
| o vencimento / vencer | the due date / to be due |
| a taxa / a multa | the fee / the fine |
| a senha | the password, the PIN; also your number in a waiting line |
| assinar / a assinatura | to sign / the signature (also: a subscription) |
- O aluguel vence no dia dez. The rent is due on the tenth.
- Quais documentos são necessários para abrir uma conta? Which documents are needed to open an account?
- A senhora precisa assinar aqui, por favor. You need to sign here, please.
CPF, boleto, Pix. The CPF is an eleven-digit number that identifies you to the tax office, and in practice to everyone else: banks, phone companies, online stores, even the pharmacy. Foreigners can get one too. At a cash register you may hear CPF na nota? ("CPF on the receipt?"); Não, obrigado is a fine answer. A boleto is a bill with a barcode that you pay in your banking app or at a bank. Rent, school fees and many online purchases come as boletos, though Pix, the instant transfer you met on day 11, has taken over much of everyday paying.
