Day 78: At work, formally

Course › Week 12: Portuguese in the real world

Day 78 of 90 · about 60 minutes

By the end of today you can:

  • Choose between você and o senhor / a senhora, and say the same thing formally or informally
  • Write a work email with the right opening, body and closing
  • Ask for something very politely: Gostaria de saber se…, Seria possível…?, Se o senhor pudesse…
  • Use manter (to keep, to maintain) and propor (to propose) in the present

Carol's job offer was a phone call. To make it real, it has to be approved by Henrique Bastos, the agency's managing partner, who works from the Curitiba office and has never met Emma. So tonight Emma writes the most formal email of her three months in Brazil.

Listen and read

Listen to the whole email once before you read it. It sounds different from everything Lucas says: listen for o senhor, for gostaria and for the fixed phrases that open and close the message.

Prezado Sr. Henrique, Dear Mr. Henrique,

Meu nome é Emma Clarke e trabalho como designer na agência de São Paulo há quase três meses. My name is Emma Clarke, and I have been working as a designer at the São Paulo agency for almost three months.

Escrevo a respeito da proposta de trabalho que a Carolina Mendes me fez recentemente. I am writing regarding the job offer that Carolina Mendes recently made me.

Em primeiro lugar, gostaria de agradecer a confiança. First of all, I would like to thank you for your trust.

Tenho muito interesse na vaga e mantenho o que disse à Carolina: quero continuar na equipe. I am very interested in the position, and I stand by what I told Carolina: I want to stay on the team.

Gostaria de saber se seria possível marcar uma reunião com o senhor nesta semana. I would like to know whether it would be possible to schedule a meeting with you this week.

Proponho quinta-feira, às dez horas, mas posso mudar a minha agenda caso o senhor prefira outro horário. I propose Thursday at ten o’clock, but I can change my schedule in case you prefer another time.

Gostaria também de esclarecer algumas dúvidas sobre o contrato e o visto de trabalho. I would also like to clear up a few questions about the contract and the work visa.

Se o senhor pudesse me enviar a proposta por escrito antes da reunião, eu ficaria muito grata. If you could send me the offer in writing before the meeting, I would be very grateful.

Segue em anexo o meu currículo atualizado. Please find attached my updated résumé.

Fico à disposição para qualquer esclarecimento. I remain at your disposal for any clarification.

Desde já, agradeço a atenção. Thank you in advance for your attention.

Atenciosamente, Sincerely,

O senhor, a senhora

You already know a senhora: it's what Emma has called Dona Marta since day 1. O senhor (to a man) and a senhora (to a woman) are the respectful "you". They take the same verb form as você, so there is nothing new to conjugate.

Portuguese English
O senhor é o diretor? Are you the director, sir?
A senhora quer um café? Would you like a coffee, ma'am?
Posso ajudar o senhor? May I help you, sir?
Isto é para a senhora. This is for you, ma'am.
Os senhores já pediram? Have you (all) ordered yet?
Qual é o nome da senhora? What is your name, ma'am?

Two things are different from English. First, Portuguese repeats o senhor every time English says "you": O senhor quer que eu ligue para o senhor amanhã? Second, "your" is either seu / sua or, to be completely clear, do senhor / da senhora: Este é o casaco da senhora?

Who gets o senhor or a senhora?

  • People clearly older than you, especially if you don't know them well: a friend's grandparents, an older neighbor.
  • Customers. Staff in a bank, a hotel or a call center will call you "senhor" or "senhora", whatever your age.
  • Someone senior whom you don't know, in a formal setting: an interviewer, a judge, a police officer.

Brazilian workplaces are informal. Colleagues say você, and so do most people to their boss: Emma has never called Carol a senhora. When you aren't sure, start with o senhor / a senhora. The usual answer is Pode me chamar de você. (You can call me você), and then you switch.

Titles go with first names. Brazilians put Sr. (senhor) and Sra. (senhora) before a first name much more than English does: Sr. Henrique, Sra. Carolina. Seu and Dona do the same job in speech, with more warmth: Seu Zé, Dona Marta. Doctors and, by custom, lawyers are Dr. (doutor) and Dra. (doutora).

The same message, twice

Formal Portuguese doesn't use different grammar. It uses more of the forms you learned on days 52 and 65 (the conditional and the past subjunctive), whole words where speech shortens them (para, está, você), and a set of fixed phrases.

To a friend or colleague To someone you write formally English
Oi, Henrique, tudo bem? Prezado Sr. Henrique, Hi, Henrique / Dear Mr. Henrique
Quero saber se… Gostaria de saber se… I want to know if / I would like to know whether
Dá pra marcar uma reunião? Seria possível marcar uma reunião? Can we set up a meeting? / Would it be possible to schedule a meeting?
Me manda o contrato? O senhor poderia me enviar o contrato? Send me the contract? / Could you send me the contract?
Se você puder me ligar, eu agradeço. Se o senhor pudesse me ligar, eu ficaria muito grato. If you can call me, thanks. / If you could call me, I would be very grateful.
Tô te mandando o arquivo. Segue em anexo o arquivo. I'm sending you the file. / Please find the file attached.
Qualquer coisa, me avisa. Fico à disposição. Anything, let me know. / I remain at your disposal.
Valeu! Abraço! Atenciosamente, Thanks! Hugs! / Sincerely,

Look at the fifth row. Se você puder (future subjunctive, day 64) is a real, likely condition. Se o senhor pudesse (past subjunctive, day 65) with ficaria (conditional) turns the same request into a what-if, which is why it sounds so polite. English does the same thing: "if you can" becomes "if you could".

Grato or grata? Obrigado or obrigada? Grato (grateful) works like obrigado: it agrees with the person who is writing. Emma writes eu ficaria muito grata; Lucas would write eu ficaria muito grato.

A work email from top to bottom

Portuguese English
o assunto the subject (line)
Prezado Sr. Henrique, / Prezada Sra. Carolina, Dear Mr. Henrique, / Dear Ms. Carolina, (formal)
Olá, Carolina, Hello, Carolina, (neutral, very common)
Bom dia, Henrique, Good morning, Henrique, (neutral, very common)
Escrevo a respeito de… I am writing regarding…
Gostaria de saber se… I would like to know whether…
Segue em anexo… Please find attached…
Fico à disposição. I remain at your disposal.
Aguardo a sua resposta. I look forward to your reply.
Desde já, agradeço. Thank you in advance.
Atenciosamente, Sincerely, (formal)
Abraços, / Um abraço, Best, (literally "hugs": friendly, and normal between colleagues)

Prezado agrees with the person you're writing to: Prezado Henrique, Prezada Carolina, Prezados senhores. When you don't know who will read it, people write Prezado(a), which is the form you will see on websites and forms.

The verb in Segue em anexo agrees with what is attached: Segue em anexo o contrato. but Seguem em anexo os documentos.

Most work email is in the middle. Between Prezado Sr. and E aí? there is a neutral style that Brazilians use every day at work: Olá or Bom dia plus the first name, você, full sentences without slang, and Abraços or Obrigada at the end. Save the fully formal style for a first message to someone senior, for a complaint, or for a company you don't know. And keep the spoken forms of day 74 (tô, pra, cê, né) out of both.

Meetings and interviews: manter and propor

Portuguese English
a reunião the meeting
a entrevista the interview
a vaga the position, the job opening
o currículo the résumé
a proposta the offer, the proposal
o prazo the deadline
a agenda the schedule, the calendar
disponível available
marcar / adiar / cancelar uma reunião to schedule / postpone / cancel a meeting
esclarecer uma dúvida to clear up a question
manter contato to keep in touch
por escrito in writing

Two verbs that work hard in an office are built on verbs you already know. Manter (to keep, to maintain) is ter with man- in front, and propor (to propose) is pôr with pro- in front. They copy ter and pôr in every tense.

manter propor
eu mantenho proponho
você, ele, ela mantém propõe
nós mantemos propomos
vocês, eles, elas mantêm propõem
  • Eu mantenho contato com todos os clientes. I keep in touch with all the clients.
  • A empresa mantém a proposta. The company stands by the offer.
  • Proponho uma reunião na sexta-feira. I propose a meeting on Friday.
  • O que vocês propõem? What do you propose?

In writing, only the accent separates ele mantém from eles mantêm. They sound the same.

Propor que is followed by the subjunctive, like querer que and pedir que on day 57, because it is something wanted and not yet a fact: Proponho que a gente comece às nove.

Useful in a meeting or an interview:

  • O senhor poderia repetir a pergunta, por favor? Could you repeat the question, please?
  • Posso fazer uma pergunta? May I ask a question?
  • Gostaria de acrescentar uma coisa. I would like to add one thing.
  • Quais seriam as minhas responsabilidades? What would my responsibilities be?
