Listen and read

Listen to the whole conversation first. Every time somebody says quando, se, assim que or enquanto, notice the verb that comes right after it.

Emma Rafa, o embarque é daqui a quarenta minutos e o Lucas ainda não chegou! Rafa, boarding is in forty minutes and Lucas still isn’t here!

Rafa Calma. Relax. When he gets here, we’ll check the bags. If he doesn’t come in ten minutes, I’ll call him.

Lucas Cheguei! Desculpa, gente. O trânsito estava horrível. I’m here! Sorry, guys. The traffic was terrible.

Emma Lucas! Lucas! If you’re this late on the way back, I’m boarding without you.

Rafa Olhem o painel. O nosso voo está atrasado. A nova previsão é para as nove. Look at the board. Our flight is delayed. The new estimate is nine o’clock.

Oh, no! What do we do if they cancel the flight?

If they cancel, the airline has to rebook our tickets. But nothing’s going to happen.

Lucas Enquanto a gente estiver esperando, vamos tomar um café? Eu pago. While we’re waiting, shall we get a coffee? I’m paying.

Emma Tá bom. Assim que eu souber o portão, eu aviso vocês. OK. As soon as I know the gate, I’ll tell you.

Rafa Minha mãe vai buscar a gente no aeroporto. My mom is going to pick us up at the airport. When we have the right time, I’ll send her a message.

Emma E amanhã? O que a gente vai fazer? And tomorrow? What are we going to do?

Rafa Depende do tempo. Se fizer sol, a gente vai à praia. Se chover, eu levo vocês ao Pelourinho. It depends on the weather. If it’s sunny, we’ll go to the beach. If it rains, I’ll take you to the Pelourinho.

And in the evening we eat acarajé, sun or rain!

Emma Como vocês quiserem. Eu só quero chegar! Whatever you guys want. I only want to get there!

Rafa Vamos chegar, se Deus quiser. Olha, já apareceu o portão. É o doze. We’ll get there, God willing. Look, the gate is up. It’s twelve.

Você entendeu? (Did you understand?)

  1. Por que o Lucas chegou atrasado?Porque ele estava tomando café. Porque ele perdeu a mala. Porque o trânsito estava horrível.
Remarcar as passagens. Despachar as malas.
Vão ficar no hotel. Vão ao Pelourinho.
A Carol. A irmã do Lucas. A mãe do Rafa.

A future that hasn't happened yet

Look at what English does in "When he gets here, we'll check the bags." The getting here is in the future, but English uses a plain present, gets. Portuguese doesn't. After quando, se and a few other words, when you're talking about something that hasn't happened yet and may or may not happen, Portuguese uses a form of its own, the future subjunctive.

  • Quando ele chegar, a gente despacha as malas. When he gets here, we'll check the bags.
  • Se chover, eu levo vocês ao Pelourinho. If it rains, I'll take you to the Pelourinho.
  • Assim que eu souber o portão, eu aviso vocês. As soon as I know the gate, I'll tell you.

The good news is that for regular verbs this form looks exactly like the infinitive for eu, você, ele, ela and a gente, so chegar and chover above are nothing new to your eyes. The work is in the irregular verbs, like souber (from saber).

The other half of the sentence, the part that says what will happen, is ordinary: the present (eu aviso vocês), vou + infinitive (vou avisar vocês) or a command (me avise).

Compare a habit with a future event. Only the second one takes the new form:

Portuguese English
When I get home, I take a shower. (every day: a habit)
When I get home, I'm going to take a shower. (later today: it hasn't happened yet)

The mistakes English speakers make. Don't copy the English present (Quando ele chega, a gente vai despachar as malas is wrong for a future event), and don't put a future there either: Quando ele vai chegar, … and Se vai chover, … are both wrong. A question is different, because there quando isn't joining two halves: Quando ele vai chegar? When is he going to arrive?

How to build it

There is one rule, and it has no exceptions. Take the eles form of the simple past, the one you learned in week 5, and remove -am.

  • eles falar·am → falar
  • eles comer·am → comer
  • eles tiver·am → tiver
  • eles for·am → for

What's left is the form for eu, você, ele, ela and a gente. Add -mos for nós and -em for vocês, eles and elas.

chegar ter ir and ser
eu chegar tiver for
você, ele, ela, a gente chegar tiver for
nós chegarmos tivermos formos
vocês, eles, elas chegarem tiverem forem
  • Quando nós chegarmos, eu te ligo. When we arrive, I'll call you.
  • Se vocês tiverem tempo, venham jantar. If you have time, come to dinner.
  • Quando eu for a Salvador, vou visitar a mãe do Rafa. When I go to Salvador, I'm going to visit Rafa's mother.

Because the rule starts from the past, every verb with an irregular past has an irregular future subjunctive. These are the ones you need. Say each one out loud.

Verb They did (eles) Portuguese English
ser, ir foram se eu for if I am, if I go
ter tiveram se eu tiver if I have
estar estiveram se eu estiver if I am
fazer fizeram se eu fizer if I do, if I make
poder puderam se eu puder if I can
querer quiseram se eu quiser if I want
vir vieram se eu vier if I come
ver viram se eu vir if I see
dar deram se eu der if I give
saber souberam se eu souber if I know, if I find out
dizer disseram se eu disser if I say
trazer trouxeram se eu trouxer if I bring

Vir and ver swap clothes. The future subjunctive of vir (to come) is vier, and the future subjunctive of ver (to see) is vir. So Quando você vier a São Paulo, me ligue. is "When you come to São Paulo, call me", and Quando você vir o Lucas, me ligue. is "When you see Lucas, call me." Plenty of Brazilians say quando você ver in relaxed speech, but in writing it's vir.

The mistake to watch for with these verbs is reaching for the infinitive: it's se eu tiver tempo, never se eu ter tempo, and quando você puder, never quando você poder.

The words that ask for it

Portuguese English
quando when
se if
assim que, logo que as soon as
enquanto while, as long as
depois que after
sempre que whenever
  • Me liga quando você puder. Call me when you can.
  • Se você quiser, eu vou com você. If you want, I'll go with you.
  • Logo que o avião sair, eu vou dormir. As soon as the plane leaves, I'm going to sleep.
As long as I'm in Salvador, I'm not going to read emails.
After we check the bags, let's get a coffee.
Whenever you need help, let me know.

With se, you'll also hear the plain present when the "if" is about right now, not about later: Se você está cansada, vá dormir. If you're tired (and I can see you are), go to bed. For something that may or may not happen later, use the future subjunctive.

The same form gives you the Portuguese for "whatever, wherever, whoever": a question word plus quiser or another verb.

Portuguese English
como você quiser however you like, whatever you want
onde você quiser wherever you like
quando você quiser whenever you like
quem quiser whoever wants to, anyone who wants to
o que você quiser whatever you want
  • Pode sentar onde quiser. You can sit wherever you like.
  • Quem chegar primeiro pede uma mesa. Whoever gets there first asks for a table.

You already knew one of these by heart: Se Deus quiser. from day 59 is literally "if God wants".

Not every joining word takes this form. On day 60 you learned antes que, até que and caso with the present subjunctive, and that doesn't change: Caso chova, a gente fica em casa. but Se chover, a gente fica em casa. Both mean "If it rains, we'll stay home." In the same way, it's antes que o voo saia but depois que o voo sair.

When travel goes wrong

Portuguese English
o voo atrasado the delayed flight
atrasar to be delayed, to run late
o atraso the delay
cancelar to cancel
remarcar to rebook
a companhia aérea the airline
o embarque boarding
embarcar to board
o portão the gate
o painel the departures board
despachar a mala to check a bag
perder o voo to miss the flight
perder a conexão to miss the connection
o imprevisto the unexpected problem
  • O voo atrasou duas horas. The flight was two hours late.
If I miss my connection, I'm going to have to rebook the flight.
