Emma Gente, alguém viu a minha carteira? Eu não encontro em lugar nenhum. Folks, has anyone seen my wallet? I can’t find it anywhere.

Lucas Eu não vi nada. Você procurou na sua bolsa? I haven’t seen anything. Did you look in your bag?

Emma Procurei em todos os lugares! Na bolsa não tem nada, e na mesa também não. I looked everywhere! There’s nothing in my bag, and nothing on my desk either.

Carol Você esqueceu em algum lugar? No restaurante do Rafa? Did you leave it somewhere? At Rafa’s restaurant?

Emma Não sei. Eu almocei lá, mas paguei com o celular. I don’t know. I had lunch there, but I paid with my phone.

Lucas Tinha algum documento dentro? Was there any ID in it?

Emma Tinha tudo! Todos os meus cartões, algum dinheiro e o meu documento canadense. There was everything! All my cards, some money and my Canadian ID.

Carol Calma. Ninguém entrou aqui hoje. Ela está em algum lugar. Stay calm. Nobody came in here today. It’s somewhere.

Lucas Eu vou ligar para o Rafa. I’m going to call Rafa.

Dois minutos depois, o Lucas volta com uma boa notícia. Two minutes later, Lucas comes back with good news.

Lucas Emma, ele encontrou uma carteira embaixo de uma mesa. É a sua! Emma, he found a wallet under a table. It’s yours!

Emma Ai, que bom! Eu não lembrava de nada. Oh, thank goodness! I didn’t remember a thing.

Carol Você tem trabalhado demais. Qualquer pessoa esquece as coisas quando está cansada. You’ve been working too much. Anyone forgets things when they’re tired.

Some and none

These words come in pairs, one positive and one negative.

Portuguese English
alguém somebody, anybody
ninguém nobody
alguma coisa something, anything
nada nothing
algum, alguma, alguns, algumas some, any (+ noun)
nenhum, nenhuma no, not any, none (+ noun)
em algum lugar somewhere
em lugar nenhum nowhere, not anywhere

Alguém, ninguém and nada never change. Algum and nenhum go with a noun and agree with it, and nenhum is nearly always singular:

  • Você tem alguma pergunta? Do you have any questions?
  • Eu tenho alguns amigos em Salvador. I have some friends in Salvador.
  • Nenhum aluno chegou tarde. No student arrived late.
  • Não tenho nenhuma ideia. I have no idea.

For "something", everyday speech prefers alguma coisa. Algo means the same and is a little more formal: Você quer beber algo?

The double negative

In English, two negatives cancel out, so you say "I don't want anything". In Portuguese, the two negatives go together, and you need both: não before the verb and the negative word after it.

  • Eu não quero nada. I don't want anything. (literally "I don't want nothing")
  • Não tem ninguém em casa. There's nobody home.
  • Eu não vi nenhum filme esta semana. I didn't see any movies this week.
  • Ela não vai nunca à praia. She never goes to the beach.

When the negative word comes before the verb, it does the job alone and there's no não:

  • Ninguém ligou. Nobody called.
  • Nada funciona aqui. Nothing works here.
  • Ela nunca vai à praia. She never goes to the beach.

"Any" is three different words. Ask yourself what kind of sentence it is.

  • In a question, it's algum: Você tem algum problema? Do you have any problem?
  • After não, it's nenhum: Não tenho nenhum problema. I don't have any problem.
  • When it means "it doesn't matter which", it's qualquer: Pode vir qualquer dia. You can come any day.

Me neither, not even, neither … nor

Portuguese English
também não not … either, neither
nem not even; nor
nem … nem neither … nor
  • Eu não gosto de frio. — Eu também não. "I don't like the cold." — "Me neither."
  • Nem eu. Me neither. (shorter, and very common)
  • Eu nem sei o nome dele. I don't even know his name.
  • Eu não bebo nem café nem chá. I drink neither coffee nor tea.

Remember eu também and eu também não from day 10? Nem … nem follows the double-negative rule too: there's a não before the verb.

Everything, every, each, any, other

Portuguese English
tudo everything
todo, toda, todos, todas all, every (+ noun)
todo mundo everybody
cada each
qualquer any (at all)
outro, outra, outros, outras other, another
vários, várias several

Tudo or todo? Tudo stands alone and never changes: it means "everything". Todo goes with a noun and agrees with it.

  • Eu esqueci tudo. I forgot everything.
  • Tudo bem? (literally "everything well?")
  • Eu trabalho todos os dias. I work every day.
  • Ela comeu toda a pizza. She ate the whole pizza.
  • Todo mundo gosta de música. Everybody likes music.

Todo mundo takes a singular verb, like "everybody" in English. So does a gente, as you know.

  • Cada pessoa paga a sua conta. Each person pays their own bill. (cada never changes)
  • Qualquer pessoa pode entrar. Anyone can come in.
  • Eu queria outro café, por favor. I'd like another coffee, please.
  • Ele já visitou vários países. He has visited several countries.

No um before outro. English says "an-other"; Portuguese says just outro: outro café, outra vez (another time, again), outro dia (another day, the other day).

Words from today's story

Portuguese English
a carteira wallet
o documento document, ID
o lugar place
procurar to look for
encontrar to find; to meet
esquecer to forget; to leave behind
Calma! Stay calm! / Relax!
demais too much
