Course › Week 8: Plans, requests and advice
By the end of today you can:
- Form the past participle of any verb (falado, comido) and the ten common irregular ones (feito, dito, visto…)
- Say what you've been doing lately: Eu tenho trabalhado muito
- Avoid the big trap: "I have done" is the simple past with já, not tenho feito
- Say what had already happened: Ela já tinha saído
It's Thursday night. The presentation is close, and Emma has come home late again. Dona Marta is waiting at her door.
Warm-up: do you remember?

Listen and read
Listen for tenho / tem + a word ending in -ado or -ido. What has Emma been doing all week?
Dona Marta Emma, minha filha, você está com uma cara cansada! Emma, my dear, you look tired!
Emma Estou mesmo, Dona Marta. Eu tenho trabalhado muito. I really am, Dona Marta. I’ve been working a lot.
Dona Marta Eu tenho visto. Você tem chegado tarde toda noite. I’ve noticed. You’ve been getting home late every night.
Emma É a apresentação para a cliente. Hoje, quando eu saí, o Lucas ainda não tinha terminado a parte dele. It’s the presentation for the client. Today, when I left, Lucas still hadn’t finished his part.
Dona Marta E você já jantou? And have you had dinner yet?
Emma Ainda não. Eu não tenho cozinhado. Só tenho comido sanduíche. Not yet. I haven’t been cooking. I’ve only been eating sandwiches.
Dona Marta Sanduíche não é jantar! Entre. A mesa está posta e o feijão está feito. A sandwich isn’t dinner! Come in. The table is set and the beans are done.
Emma A senhora já tinha feito o jantar? You had already made dinner?
Dona Marta Tinha, sim. E fiz pão de queijo também. Yes, I had. And I made pão de queijo too.
Emma Que delícia! A senhora tem sido uma mãe para mim. How delicious! You’ve been a mother to me.
Dona Marta E as passagens para Salvador? Você já comprou? And the tickets to Salvador? Have you bought them yet?
Emma Já comprei, e já estão pagas! I’ve bought them, and they’re already paid for!

- Quem tinha feito o jantar?A Dona Marta. A Emma. O Lucas.

The past participle: -ado, -ido
The past participle is the form that goes with "have" or "is" in English: worked, eaten, done, open(ed). In Portuguese:
- -ar verbs: take off -ar, add -ado: falar → falado, trabalhar → trabalhado
- -er and -ir verbs: take off the ending, add -ido: comer → comido, dormir → dormido
Ser, estar, ter and ir are regular here: sido, estado, tido, ido. These ten are not:
| Verb | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|
| fazer | feito | done, made |
| dizer | dito | said |
| ver | visto | seen |
| escrever | escrito | written |
| abrir | aberto | opened, open |
| pôr | posto | put |
| vir | vindo | come |
| pagar | pago | paid |
| ganhar | ganho | won, earned |
| gastar | gasto | spent |
Pago, ganho, gasto. These three verbs also have regular participles (pagado, ganhado, gastado), which you may see after ter in older or more formal writing. The short forms work everywhere, so they're the ones to learn.
A participle can also work as an adjective, usually after estar. Then it agrees with the noun, like any adjective:
- A porta está aberta. The door is open.
- O jantar está feito. Dinner is made.
- As passagens estão pagas. The tickets are paid for.
- Os e-mails estão escritos. The emails are written.
After ter, it never changes. It always ends in -o.
Tenho trabalhado: what you've been doing lately
Present of ter + participle describes something that has been happening again and again, or continuously, over a recent period up to now. The natural English is "have been …ing".
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu tenho trabalhado | I have been working |
| você tem trabalhado | you have been working |
| ele tem trabalhado / ela tem trabalhado | he / she has been working |
| nós temos trabalhado | we have been working |
| vocês têm trabalhado | you (all) have been working |
| eles têm trabalhado / elas têm trabalhado | they have been working |
- Eu tenho dormido mal ultimamente. I've been sleeping badly lately.
- Tem chovido muito. It's been raining a lot.
- O que você tem feito? What have you been up to?
- A gente não tem saído muito. We haven't been going out much.
It often comes with ultimamente (lately), esta semana or nos últimos dias (in the last few days).
The trap: "I have done" is not tenho feito. English uses "have" + participle for a finished action too: "I've bought the tickets." Portuguese doesn't. For one finished action, use the simple past, usually with já (already, ever), ainda não (not yet) or nunca (never), just as you learned on day 33.
- I've bought the tickets. → Eu já comprei as passagens.
- Have you had dinner yet? → Você já jantou?
- I've never been to Salvador. → Eu nunca fui a Salvador.
- I haven't finished yet. → Eu ainda não terminei.
Eu tenho comprado passagens would mean "I've been buying tickets (again and again) lately".
And for something that started in the past and is still true, Portuguese uses the present with há or faz (day 33): Eu moro aqui há dois meses. I've lived here for two months.
Tinha feito: what had already happened
Imperfect of ter + participle is "had done": an action that was already finished before another moment in the past. This one matches English exactly.
- Quando eu cheguei, ela já tinha saído. When I arrived, she had already left.
- O Lucas ainda não tinha terminado. Lucas hadn't finished yet.
- Eu nunca tinha visto o mar. I had never seen the sea.
- Nós já tínhamos jantado. We had already had dinner.
In books and newspapers you'll also see havia in place of tinha (ela já havia saído). It means the same thing.
Words for a busy week
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| ultimamente | lately |
| nos últimos dias | in the last few days |
| o projeto | project |
| o relatório | report |
| o prazo | deadline |
| entregar | to hand in, to deliver |
| a parte | part |
| estar com uma cara cansada | to look tired |
| pôr a mesa | to set the table |
