- Ask for a table, the menu and the check
- Order food and drinks politely, with or without something
- Say you're hungry or thirsty, and how you like your meat

Ordering
You already have the most important word: eu queria, "I'd like". Brazilians have two more everyday ways to order, and you can mix all three in one meal.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Uma mesa para dois, por favor. | OO-mah MAY-zah PAH-rah doys, poor fah-VOHR | A table for two, please. |
| O cardápio, por favor. | oo kar-DAH-pyoo, poor fah-VOHR | The menu, please. |
| Eu queria… | EH-oo keh-REE-ah | I'd like… |
| Eu vou querer… | EH-oo voh keh-REHR | I'll have… |
| Para mim, … | PAH-rah meeng | For me, … |
| O que vocês querem beber? | oo kee voh-SAYS KEH-rayng beh-BEHR | What do you want to drink? |
| Mais alguma coisa? | mice ow-GOO-mah KOY-zah | Anything else? |
| Só isso, obrigado. / Só isso, obrigada. | saw EE-soo, oh-bree-GAH-doo / oh-bree-GAH-dah | That's all, thanks. |
| A conta, por favor. | ah KOHN-tah, poor fah-VOHR | The check, please. |
| a gorjeta | ah gohr-ZHAY-tah | the tip |
| o garçom / a garçonete | oo gar-SOHNG / ah gar-soh-NEH-tchee | the waiter / the waitress |
Eu vou querer is ir + infinitive from day 19: literally "I'm going to want". It sounds odd in English and completely normal in a Brazilian restaurant.
- Eu vou querer o peixe. I'll have the fish.
- Para mim, o frango com salada. For me, the chicken with salad.
- Eu queria uma água, por favor. I'd like a water, please.
About the tip. Most Brazilian restaurants add a 10% service charge to the check, so people don't usually leave extra money on the table. You can ask O serviço está incluído? ("Is the service included?"). Paying it is expected, but by law it's optional.
Food and drinks
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| o café da manhã | oo kah-FEH dah mah-NYAHNG | breakfast |
| o almoço | oo ow-MOH-soo | lunch |
| o jantar | oo zhahn-TAR | dinner |
| o prato | oo PRAH-too | plate, dish |
| o prato do dia | oo PRAH-too doo DJEE-ah | the daily special |
| o arroz | oo ah-HOHS | rice |
| o feijão | oo fay-ZHOWNG | beans |
| a carne | ah KAR-nee | meat, beef |
| o frango | oo FRAHN-goo | chicken |
| o peixe | oo PAY-shee | fish |
| a salada | ah sah-LAH-dah | salad |
| a batata frita | ah bah-TAH-tah FREE-tah | French fries |
| a sobremesa | ah soh-bree-MAY-zah | dessert |
| a água com gás / sem gás | ah AH-gwah kohng gahs / sayng gahs | sparkling / still water |
| o suco | oo SOO-koo | juice |
| a cerveja | ah sehr-VAY-zhah | beer |
| o refrigerante | oo heh-free-zheh-RAHN-tchee | soda |
For "to have" a drink, Brazilians mostly say tomar (a regular -ar verb: tomo, toma, tomamos, tomam). It's also the verb for breakfast.
- Eu tomo café de manhã. I have coffee in the morning.
- Vamos tomar uma cerveja? Shall we have a beer?
- A gente toma café da manhã às sete. We have breakfast at seven.
Beber (to drink) is correct too. Tomar is what you'll hear most.
With, without, more
Three small words let you change any order: com (with), sem (without) and mais (more, or "another").
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| com | kohng | with |
| sem | sayng | without |
| mais | mice | more |
| um café com leite | oong kah-FEH kohng LAY-tchee | a coffee with milk |
| um suco sem açúcar | oong SOO-koo sayng ah-SOO-kar | a juice without sugar |
| mais uma cerveja | mice OO-mah sehr-VAY-zhah | one more beer, another beer |
| mais arroz | mice ah-HOHS | more rice |
| gelado / gelada | zheh-LAH-doo / zheh-LAH-dah | ice-cold |
| bem passado / bem passada | bayng pah-SAH-doo / pah-SAH-dah | well done |
| ao ponto | ow POHN-too | medium |
| mal passado / mal passada | mow pah-SAH-doo / pah-SAH-dah | rare |
Bem passado and mal passado describe the meat, so they agree with it: um bife bem passado (a well-done steak), but a carne bem passada. Ao ponto never changes.
Hungry and thirsty use estar com. You met these on day 5: Eu estou com fome. is "I'm hungry" (literally "I'm with hunger") and Eu estou com sede. is "I'm thirsty". To make them stronger, use muita, because fome and sede are feminine nouns: Eu estou com muita fome. Don't say muito fome, and don't say eu sou fome.
Fazer: to do, to make
One verb covers both English "do" and "make". The eu form is irregular, with a ç: eu faço. And the você form is short, like quer: faz.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| eu faço | EH-oo FAH-soo | I do, I make |
| você faz | voh-SAY fahs | you do, you make |
| ele faz / ela faz | AY-lee fahs / EH-lah fahs | he does / she does |
| nós fazemos | naws fah-ZAY-moos | we do, we make |
| vocês fazem | voh-SAYS FAH-zayng | you (all) do, make |
| eles fazem / elas fazem | AY-lees FAH-zayng / EH-lahs FAH-zayng | they do, they make |
- O que você faz à noite? What do you do in the evening?
- O Rafa faz uma moqueca muito boa. Rafa makes a very good moqueca.
- O que você vai fazer amanhã? What are you going to do tomorrow?
O que você faz? on its own usually means "What do you do for a living?"
Fazer is also part of many set phrases. Learn these as wholes:
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| fazer o jantar | fah-ZEHR oo zhahn-TAR | to make dinner |
| fazer um bolo | fah-ZEHR oong BOH-loo | to make a cake |
| fazer compras | fah-ZEHR KOHN-prahs | to go shopping |
| fazer uma reserva | fah-ZEHR OO-mah heh-ZEHR-vah | to make a reservation |
| fazer uma pergunta | fah-ZEHR OO-mah pehr-GOON-tah | to ask a question |
| fazer exercício | fah-ZEHR eh-zehr-SEE-syoo | to exercise |
"Do" in questions is not fazer. English uses "do" to build questions and negatives: "Do you eat meat?", "I don't eat meat." Portuguese doesn't: Você come carne? and Eu não como carne. Use fazer only when "do" is the real action: "What do you do?"
