Listen and read

Listen for three small words: esta, essa and aquela. Each time, where is the blouse?

Vendedora Bom dia! Posso ajudar? Good morning! Can I help you?

Emma Bom dia! Quanto custa esta blusa aqui? Good morning! How much is this blouse here?

Vendedora Essa custa cento e vinte reais. That one is a hundred and twenty reais.

Dona Marta Emma, e aquela azul lá? Eu prefiro a azul. Emma, what about that blue one over there? I prefer the blue one.

Emma Aquela é linda! Posso experimentar? That one is beautiful! Can I try it on?

Vendedora Claro! Qual é o seu tamanho? Of course! What’s your size?

Emma Eu uso P. I wear a small.

Vendedora Aqui está. O provador fica ali, ao lado do caixa. Here you go. The fitting room is over there, next to the register.

Emma Esta está um pouco pequena. Tem no tamanho M? This one is a little small. Do you have it in a medium?

Vendedora Tem, sim. E tem em outra cor também: vermelha. Yes, we do. And we have it in another color too: red.

Dona Marta A azul é perfeita para você! The blue one is perfect for you!

Emma Então vou levar a azul. Quanto é? Then I’ll take the blue one. How much is it?

Vendedora Cento e cinquenta e nove reais. A hundred and fifty-nine reais.

Emma Dá para pagar com cartão? Can I pay by card?

This, that and that over there

English has two words for pointing, "this" and "that". Portuguese has three, and the choice depends on who the thing is near. Each one has a masculine and a feminine form, and matches its noun like o and a do.

Portuguese Sounds like English
este / esta AYS-tchee / EHS-tah this (near me)
esse / essa AY-see / EH-sah that (near you)
aquele / aquela ah-KAY-lee / ah-KEH-lah that over there (far from both of us)
estes / estas AYS-tchees / EHS-tahs these (near me)
esses / essas AY-sees / EH-sahs those (near you)
aqueles / aquelas ah-KAY-lees / ah-KEH-lahs those over there

The place words from day 18 go with them naturally: aqui (here, near me), aí (there, near you), ali and lá (over there).

  • Esta blusa aqui é bonita. This blouse here is pretty.
  • Essa camisa aí é nova? Is that shirt (the one you have) new?
  • Aquele vestido lá é caro. That dress over there is expensive.
  • Eu quero estes sapatos. I want these shoes.

You can drop the noun when it's clear what you mean. English adds "one"; Portuguese adds nothing: Eu prefiro aquela. I prefer that one.

What Brazilians really say. In everyday speech, most Brazilians use esse / essa for both "this" and "that near you", and keep este / esta for writing and careful speech. So you'll hear essa blusa aqui for a blouse the speaker is holding. Both are fine for "this". The difference that always matters is between esse (close to one of us) and aquele (far from both of us).

When you don't name the thing at all, because you don't know what it is or you mean a whole situation, use the three forms that never change:

Portuguese Sounds like English
isto EES-too this (thing)
isso EE-soo that (thing), and in speech also "this"
aquilo ah-KEE-loo that (thing) over there
  • O que é isso? What's that? / What's this?
  • O que é aquilo lá? What's that over there?
  • Só isso, obrigada. That's all, thanks.

Clothes and sizes

Portuguese Sounds like English
a roupa ah HOH-pah clothes
a camisa ah kah-MEE-zah shirt
a camiseta ah kah-mee-ZAY-tah T-shirt
a blusa ah BLOO-zah blouse, top
a calça ah KOW-sah pants
o vestido oo vehs-TCHEE-doo dress
a saia ah SY-ah skirt
o casaco oo kah-ZAH-koo coat
a jaqueta ah zhah-KAY-tah jacket
o sapato oo sah-PAH-too shoe
o tênis oo TAY-nees sneaker, sneakers
o tamanho oo tah-MAH-nyoo size
o provador oo proh-vah-DOHR fitting room
a loja ah LAW-zhah store

Two things to notice. A calça is singular in Portuguese: one pair of pants is uma calça. And o tênis looks the same in the singular and the plural: um tênis, dois tênis.

"To wear" is usar, a regular -ar verb that also means "to use": Eu uso calça e camiseta no trabalho. Sizes are letters: P (pequeno, small), M (médio, medium) and G (grande, large). You say the letter: Eu uso M.

In the store

Portuguese Sounds like English
Posso ajudar? PAW-soo ah-zhoo-DAR Can I help you?
Só estou olhando, obrigado. / obrigada. saw ees-TOH oh-LYAHN-doo I'm just looking, thanks.
Posso experimentar? PAW-soo ees-peh-ree-men-TAR Can I try it on?
Qual é o seu tamanho? kwow eh oo SEH-oo tah-MAH-nyoo What's your size?
Tem no tamanho M? tayng noo tah-MAH-nyoo EH-mee Do you have it in a medium?
Tem em outra cor? tayng ayng OH-trah kohr Do you have it in another color?
Está grande. / Está pequeno. ees-TAH GRAHN-djee / ees-TAH peh-KAY-noo It's too big. / It's too small.
Vou levar. voh leh-VAR I'll take it.
o caixa oo KY-shah the register, the checkout

Notice what's missing: the word "it". Portuguese leaves it out in all of these. Posso experimentar? is literally "Can I try?", and Vou levar is "I'm going to take". You'll learn the words for "it" on day 40, and you'll find Brazilians rarely use them.

Está grande uses estar because it's about how the piece fits you right now, not what it is. The adjective still agrees with the thing: a blusa está pequena, but o vestido está pequeno.

Só estou olhando uses a form you haven't studied yet (estou olhando, "I am looking"; day 36). Learn the sentence as one piece for now. It's the polite way to tell a salesperson you don't need help.

Numbers from 100 to 1,000,000

Clothes and rent cost hundreds of reais, so you need the hundreds.

Portuguese Sounds like English
cem sayng 100
cento e um SEN-too ee oong 101
duzentos / duzentas doo-ZEN-toos / doo-ZEN-tahs 200
trezentos / trezentas treh-ZEN-toos / treh-ZEN-tahs 300
quatrocentos / quatrocentas kwah-troo-SEN-toos / kwah-troo-SEN-tahs 400
quinhentos / quinhentas kee-NYEN-toos / kee-NYEN-tahs 500
seiscentos / seiscentas says-SEN-toos / says-SEN-tahs 600
setecentos / setecentas seh-tchee-SEN-toos / seh-tchee-SEN-tahs 700
oitocentos / oitocentas oy-too-SEN-toos / oy-too-SEN-tahs 800
novecentos / novecentas naw-vee-SEN-toos / naw-vee-SEN-tahs 900
mil meew 1,000
dois mil / duas mil doys meew / DOO-ahs meew 2,000
um milhão oong mee-LYOWNG 1,000,000

The rules:

  • Cem is exactly 100. From 101 to 199 it becomes cento: cento e vinte (120), cento e cinquenta e nove (159).
  • Join hundreds, tens and ones with e: duzentos e trinta e cinco (235).
  • The hundreds from 200 to 900 are adjectives, so they have a feminine form: duzentos reais, but duzentas pessoas.
  • 1,000 is mil, never um mil. After mil, say e only when what follows is a round hundred or a number under a hundred: mil e quinhentos (1,500), mil e vinte (1,020), but mil duzentos e cinquenta (1,250).
  • Um milhão needs de before a noun: um milhão de reais. The plural is milhões: dois milhões.

Periods and commas swap places. Brazilians write a period where English writes a comma in big numbers, and a comma for the decimals: R$ 1.250,90 is mil duzentos e cinquenta reais e noventa centavos.
