Listen and read

Listen for foi, foram and está followed by a word ending in -do or -da. Who did the action? Often the sentence doesn't say.

Emma Bom dia, Seu Zé! O que o senhor está lendo? Good morning, Seu Zé! What are you reading?

Seu Zé Bom dia, Emma! O jornal do bairro. Olha esta manchete: "Cinema da esquina será reaberto em dezembro". Good morning, Emma! The neighborhood paper. Look at this headline: "Corner movie theater to be reopened in December".

Emma Aquele cinema antigo que está fechado? That old movie theater that’s closed?

Seu Zé Esse mesmo. Ele foi construído em 1952 e foi destruído por um incêndio há dez anos. That very one. It was built in 1952 and was destroyed by a fire ten years ago.

Emma Que pena! E agora? What a shame! And now?

Seu Zé Agora está sendo reformado. A reforma está sendo paga pela prefeitura. Now it’s being renovated. The renovation is being paid for by the city government.

Emma E este prédio, quando foi construído? And this building, when was it built?

Seu Zé Em 1968. O projeto foi feito por um arquiteto italiano. E as janelas foram trocadas no ano passado. In 1968. The design was done by an Italian architect. And the windows were replaced last year.

Emma Eu vi uma placa lá fora: "Aluga-se apartamento". É aqui no prédio? I saw a sign outside: "Apartment for rent". Is it here in the building?

Seu Zé É o 52. Neste bairro se aluga tudo muito rápido. E na casa da frente tem outra placa: "Vende-se". It’s number 52. In this neighborhood everything gets rented very fast. And the house across the street has another sign: "For sale".

Emma E na padaria está escrito "Precisa-se de atendente". And at the bakery it says "Counter clerk wanted".

Seu Zé Pois é. Ah, Emma, uma notícia boa: o bolo já foi encomendado. A Carol passou aqui ontem. That’s right. Oh, Emma, some good news: the cake has already been ordered. Carol came by yesterday.

Emma Psiu! Fala baixo, Seu Zé! A Dona Marta não pode saber de nada. Shh! Keep your voice down, Seu Zé! Dona Marta can’t know anything.

Seu Zé Fica tranquila. Aqui na portaria se ouve tudo, mas não se conta nada! Don’t worry. Here at the front desk you hear everything, but you don’t tell anything!

Você entendeu?

  1. O que aconteceu com o cinema há dez anos?Foi vendido para a prefeitura. Foi construído por um arquiteto italiano. Foi destruído por um incêndio.
  2. Quem está pagando a reforma do cinema?O Seu Zé. Um arquiteto italiano. A prefeitura.
  3. O que foi trocado no prédio da Emma no ano passado? As portas. As janelas. As placas.
  4. O que está escrito na placa da padaria?Aluga-se apartamento. Vende-se. Precisa-se de atendente.

Ser + participle: the passive

In an active sentence, the subject does the action: Um arquiteto italiano fez o projeto. In a passive sentence (a voz passiva), the thing that receives the action becomes the subject: O projeto foi feito por um arquiteto italiano. English builds it with "to be" plus a participle (was built, is paid, will be opened), and Portuguese does exactly the same with ser plus the participle you learned on day 53.

There is one difference from English, and it's the thing to watch all day: the participle agrees with the subject, like an adjective.

Portuguese English
O prédio foi construído em 1968. The building was built in 1968.
A ponte foi construída em 1968. The bridge was built in 1968.
Os prédios foram construídos em 1968. The buildings were built in 1968.
As pontes foram construídas em 1968. The bridges were built in 1968.

The tense lives in ser, so you can make any passive you need from forms you already know:

Portuguese English
O jornal é publicado toda semana. The newspaper is published every week.
O jornal foi publicado ontem. The newspaper was published yesterday.
O jornal era publicado todo dia. The newspaper used to be published every day.
O jornal vai ser publicado amanhã. The newspaper is going to be published tomorrow.
O jornal será publicado amanhã. The newspaper will be published tomorrow. (formal)
O jornal está sendo publicado agora. The newspaper is being published now.

To say who did it, add por, which joins the article as it always does: pelo, pela, pelos, pelas.

  • O bolo foi encomendado pela Carol. The cake was ordered by Carol.
  • A reforma está sendo paga pela prefeitura. The renovation is being paid for by the city government.
  • As fotos foram tiradas por um repórter. The photos were taken by a reporter.

The irregular participles come back here. The ones from day 53 all agree too: feito, feita · escrito, escrita · aberto, aberta · visto, vista · dito, dita · posto, posta · pago, paga · gasto, gasta. Three more are very common in the news: preso (from prender, to arrest), entregue (from entregar, to deliver; same form for masculine and feminine) and aceito (from aceitar, to accept).

  • O ladrão foi preso ontem à noite. The thief was arrested last night.
  • As cartas foram entregues hoje. The letters were delivered today.

Foi aberto or está aberto?

English uses "was closed" or "is closed" for two different ideas, and Portuguese separates them with the two verbs you've been telling apart since day 5.

  • ser + participle is the event: somebody did something.
  • estar + participle is the state that results: how things are afterwards.
Event (ser) State (estar)
A loja foi aberta em 1990. A loja está aberta.
The store was opened in 1990. The store is open.
A janela foi quebrada ontem. A janela está quebrada.
The window was broken yesterday. The window is broken.
O cinema foi fechado depois do incêndio. O cinema está fechado.
The movie theater was closed down after the fire. The movie theater is closed.
  • O jantar está feito. Dinner is made. (It's ready now.)
  • O jantar foi feito pelo Rafa. Dinner was made by Rafa. (That's what happened.)
  • Na placa está escrito "Vende-se". On the sign it says "For sale". (literally "is written")

A quick test: if you can add "by someone" and it still makes sense, you want ser. If you're describing what you see when you look at the thing, you want estar.

Vende-se, aluga-se: sentences with se

Signs, ads and notices in Brazil are full of a third pattern: the verb plus se, with nobody named as the doer.

Portuguese English
Vende-se. For sale.
Aluga-se apartamento. Apartment for rent.
Fala-se inglês. English spoken.
Conserta-se celular. Cell phones repaired.
Precisa-se de atendente. Counter clerk wanted.
Procura-se cozinheiro. Cook wanted.

The same se makes general statements about what "people" or "one" does. This is where English says "you", "they" or "people":

  • Aqui se come muito bem. The food is very good here. (literally "here one eats very well")
  • Como se diz "sign" em português? How do you say "sign" in Portuguese?
  • Como se escreve o seu nome? How do you spell your name?
  • No Brasil se janta tarde. In Brazil people have dinner late.
  • Aqui não se pode fumar. You can't smoke here.

Where does se go? At the very start of a sentence it follows the verb with a hyphen: Vende-se, Fala-se. After a word such as aqui, não, como, onde or que, it goes before the verb: Aqui se fala português. Não se sabe.

Vende-se casas or vendem-se casas? In careful writing the verb agrees with the thing: Vendem-se casas. Alugam-se quartos. On real signs you'll often see the singular, Vende-se casas, which grammar books call a mistake and most Brazilians don't notice. With a preposition the verb is always singular: Precisa-se de vendedores.

What people say instead

The passive with ser is the language of newspapers, reports and signs. In conversation Brazilians avoid it. They have three everyday ways to say the same thing, and you already know all the words.

In the news In conversation English
O prédio foi construído em 1968. Construíram o prédio em 1968. The building was built in 1968.
Meu celular foi roubado. Roubaram meu celular. My phone was stolen.
No Brasil se janta tarde. No Brasil a gente janta tarde. In Brazil people have dinner late.
Paga-se na saída. Você paga na saída. You pay on the way out.
  • Eles with no subject: put the verb in the eles form and don't say who. Roubaram meu celular. Vão reformar o cinema. Me disseram que você vai ficar no Brasil. Nobody in particular is "they".
  • A gente for "people in general, me included": Aqui a gente almoça ao meio-dia.
  • Você for "anyone": Você entra, pega uma senha e espera. You go in, take a number and wait.

So read foi construído, and say construíram.

Today's words come from the news:

Portuguese English
o jornal the newspaper; the news (on TV)
a notícia a piece of news
a manchete the headline
a reportagem the news story, the report
publicar to publish
entrevistar to interview
construir to build
destruir to destroy
reformar to renovate
inaugurar to open (officially, for the first time)
roubar to steal, to rob
prender to arrest
o incêndio the fire
o ladrão the thief
a prefeitura the city government, city hall
a placa the sign

Headlines love the passive, usually in the present even for something that has already happened: Novo parque é inaugurado na zona sul. Ladrão é preso no centro. You'll look at headlines again on day 80.
