Listen and read

Listen for the comparing words: mais, menos, melhor, pior, maior, menor. Which city does each person defend?

Lucas Emma, qual cidade você prefere: São Paulo ou o Rio? Emma, which city do you prefer: São Paulo or Rio?

Emma Que pergunta difícil! Eu acho que o Rio é mais bonito do que São Paulo. What a hard question! I think Rio is more beautiful than São Paulo.

Carol Mas São Paulo é maior e tem mais trabalho. But São Paulo is bigger and has more work.

Lucas E a comida aqui é melhor! Os restaurantes de São Paulo são os melhores do Brasil. And the food here is better! São Paulo’s restaurants are the best in Brazil.

Emma É verdade. Mas o trânsito aqui é pior do que no Rio. That’s true. But the traffic here is worse than in Rio.

Carol E Toronto? É tão grande quanto São Paulo? And Toronto? Is it as big as São Paulo?

Emma Não, é bem menor. Toronto tem menos gente e é mais tranquila. Mas é muito mais fria! No, it’s quite a bit smaller. Toronto has fewer people and it’s calmer. But it’s much colder!

Lucas Quantos graus faz lá no inverno? How many degrees is it there in winter?

Emma Menos vinte, às vezes. Minus twenty, sometimes.

Carol Nossa! Curitiba é a capital mais fria do Brasil, mas não é tão fria quanto Toronto. Wow! Curitiba is the coldest state capital in Brazil, but it isn’t as cold as Toronto.

Emma As três cidades são muito diferentes. Mas as pessoas daqui são as mais simpáticas! The three cities are very different. But the people from here are the nicest!

Lucas Claro! E o Corinthians é o melhor time do mundo. Of course! And Corinthians is the best team in the world.

Carol Não sei, não… Mas você é a pessoa mais atrasada da agência! I’m not so sure… But you’re the least punctual person at the agency!

  3. Como é o inverno em Toronto?Muito frio. Igual ao inverno de São Paulo. Muito quente.
  4. Quem é a pessoa mais atrasada da agência?O Lucas. A Emma. A Carol.

More than, less than

To compare two things, put mais (more) or menos (less) before the adjective and do que (than) after it. The adjective still agrees with the thing you're describing.

Portuguese English
O Rio é mais bonito do que São Paulo. Rio is more beautiful than São Paulo.
Toronto é mais fria do que Curitiba. Toronto is colder than Curitiba.
O ônibus é menos rápido do que o metrô. The bus is less fast than the subway.
Hoje está mais quente do que ontem. Today is hotter than yesterday.

English has two ways to compare ("colder", "more beautiful"). Portuguese has only one: always mais + adjective.

You can leave out the do and say only que: mais bonito que São Paulo. Both are correct; do que is more common in speech.

The same words compare nouns and actions:

  • São Paulo tem mais restaurantes do que o Rio. São Paulo has more restaurants than Rio.
  • Toronto tem menos gente do que São Paulo. Toronto has fewer people than São Paulo.
  • A Carol trabalha mais do que eu. Carol works more than I do.

To make the difference bigger or smaller, add muito or um pouco before mais or menos: Toronto é muito mais fria. Este é um pouco mais caro.

Two details. After do que, use eu, ele, ela, not mim: mais alto do que eu. And before a number, "more than" is mais de: Eu tenho mais de vinte primos. I have more than twenty cousins.

Four irregular words

Four very common adjectives have their own comparing form, as "good" becomes "better" in English. They never take mais.

Adjective Portuguese English
bom / boa (good) melhor better
ruim (bad) pior worse
grande (big) maior bigger
pequeno / pequena (small) menor smaller

They are the same for masculine and feminine, and they add -es in the plural: melhores, piores, maiores, menores.

  • Este café é melhor do que aquele. This coffee is better than that one.
  • O trânsito hoje está pior do que ontem. The traffic today is worse than yesterday.
  • São Paulo é maior do que Toronto. São Paulo is bigger than Toronto.
  • Meu apartamento é menor do que o seu. My apartment is smaller than yours.

Melhor and pior are also "better" and "worse" for how something is done: Ela fala português melhor do que eu.

Don't say mais bom or mais grande. They sound as wrong as "more good" and "more big" do in English. It's melhor and maior.

As … as

When two things are equal, use tão + adjective + quanto.

  • Curitiba não é tão fria quanto Toronto. Curitiba isn't as cold as Toronto.
  • A Emma é tão alta quanto a Bia. Emma is as tall as Bia.

With a noun, "as much" or "as many" is tanto, and it agrees with the noun like an adjective:

Portuguese English
tanto tempo quanto as much time as
tanta chuva quanto as much rain as
tantos carros quanto as many cars as
tantas pessoas quanto as many people as
  • Eu não tenho tanto tempo quanto você. I don't have as much time as you.
  • O Rio não tem tantos carros quanto São Paulo. Rio doesn't have as many cars as São Paulo.

With a verb, it's tanto quanto, and it doesn't change: O Lucas trabalha tanto quanto a Emma. Lucas works as much as Emma.

You'll also see como in place of quanto (tão alta como a Bia). It means the same thing.

The most, the best

For "the most …" or "the …est", add o, a, os or as before mais. The word for "in" after it is de (with its article), not em.

Portuguese English
a cidade mais bonita do Brasil the most beautiful city in Brazil
a pessoa mais atrasada da agência the least punctual person at the agency
o melhor restaurante da cidade the best restaurant in the city
a maior cidade do país the biggest city in the country
os piores dias do ano the worst days of the year

Notice the order: the noun usually comes first (a cidade mais bonita), but melhor, pior, maior and menor go before the noun (o melhor restaurante).

To say that something is extremely …, without comparing it to anything, Brazilians often swap the final vowel of an adjective for -íssimo (or -íssima):

Portuguese English
caro → caríssimo extremely expensive
lindo → lindíssimo absolutely beautiful
cansada → cansadíssima extremely tired
muito → muitíssimo very, very much
  • O Rio é lindíssimo! Rio is absolutely beautiful!
  • Esse restaurante é caríssimo. That restaurant is extremely expensive.

A few adjectives change their spelling on the way (rico → riquíssimo, fácil → facílimo). Learn those as you meet them. Muito caro is always correct too.

The same, alike, different

Portuguese English
o mesmo / a mesma the same
igual a the same as, just like
diferente de different from
parecido com / parecida com similar to, like
  • A gente trabalha na mesma agência. We work at the same agency.
  • O seu celular é igual ao meu. Your phone is the same as mine.
  • O Rio é muito diferente de São Paulo. Rio is very different from São Paulo.
  • A Bia é parecida com o Lucas. Bia looks like Lucas.

A, de and com join the article in the usual way: igual ao meu, igual à minha, diferente do meu, diferente da minha.

Some adjectives for comparing cities:

Portuguese English
tranquilo / tranquila calm, quiet
barulhento / barulhenta noisy
seguro / segura safe
perigoso / perigosa dangerous
limpo / limpa clean
sujo / suja dirty
moderno / moderna modern
antigo / antiga old (for things and places)

Giving your opinion. Comparisons are opinions, so today's other useful phrase is Eu acho que… (I think that…), from achar: Eu acho que o Rio é mais bonito. To ask, say O que você acha? (What do you think?) Short answers: Eu acho que sim. (I think so.) and Eu acho que não. (I don't think so.)
