Emma Lucas, você conhece o Seu Otávio, o cliente? Lucas, do you know Seu Otávio, the client?
Lucas Conheço. Ele é muito simpático. Por quê? Yes, I do. He’s very nice. Why?
Emma Preciso ligar para ele hoje, mas não sei o que dizer. Eu não consigo entender as pessoas no telefone. I need to call him today, but I don’t know what to say. I can’t understand people on the phone.
Lucas Claro que consegue! Você já sabe falar português muito bem. Of course you can! You already know how to speak Portuguese very well.
Emma Eu sei falar, mas não consigo falar rápido. E ele fala muito rápido! I know how to speak, but I can’t speak fast. And he speaks very fast!
Lucas Então você pode pedir: "O senhor pode falar mais devagar, por favor?" Then you can ask: "Can you speak more slowly, please?"
Emma Boa ideia. Você sabe o número dele? Good idea. Do you know his number?
Lucas Não sei de cabeça, mas a Carol sabe. I don’t know it by heart, but Carol does.

Saber and conhecer: two verbs for "to know"
English has one verb, "to know". Portuguese has two, and they are not interchangeable.
Saber is to know a fact or a piece of information: something you could say or write down. It is the verb to use before que, onde, quando, como, quem, por que and o que.
Conhecer is to be familiar with a person, a place or a thing, because you have met them, been there or tried it.
| Portuguese | English | |
|---|---|---|
| a fact | Eu sei o número dele. | I know his number. |
| a fact | Você sabe onde ela mora? | Do you know where she lives? |
| a person | Eu conheço a Bia. | I know Bia. |
| a place | Você conhece o Rio? | Do you know Rio? / Have you been to Rio? |
| a thing | Eu não conheço esse filme. | I don't know that movie. |
Both are irregular only in the eu form.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu sei | I know |
| você sabe / ele sabe / ela sabe | you know / he knows / she knows |
| nós sabemos | we know |
| vocês sabem / eles sabem / elas sabem | you (all) know / they know |
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu conheço | I know |
| você conhece / ele conhece / ela conhece | you know / he knows / she knows |
| nós conhecemos | we know |
| vocês conhecem / eles conhecem / elas conhecem | you (all) know / they know |
- Não sei. I don't know.
- Você sabe que horas são? Do you know what time it is?
- A gente conhece um restaurante ótimo aqui perto. We know a great restaurant near here.
- Eu conheço São Paulo, mas não sei onde fica essa rua. I know São Paulo, but I don't know where that street is.
A quick test. If what comes next is a person or a place, you want conhecer. If it's a question word (onde, quando, quem…), que, or a piece of information like a name, a number or an address, you want saber. "I don't know" on its own is always Não sei.
Saber + infinitive: knowing how
Put an infinitive straight after saber and it means "to know how to". There is no word for "how" here: don't add como.
- Eu sei cozinhar. I know how to cook. / I can cook.
- A Emma sabe falar francês. Emma can speak French.
- Você sabe dançar samba? Can you dance samba?
- O Lucas sabe tocar violão. Lucas can play the guitar.
Notice that English usually says "can" for a skill. Portuguese says saber.
Poder and conseguir: two more kinds of "can"
You met poder on day 22. It is "can" in the sense of being allowed to, or of something being possible.
Conseguir is "can" in the sense of managing to do something: you try, and you succeed (or you try, and you fail). It is the verb for anything that takes effort.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu consigo | I can, I manage |
| você consegue / ele consegue / ela consegue | you can / he can / she can |
| nós conseguimos | we can, we manage |
| vocês conseguem / eles conseguem / elas conseguem | you (all) can / they can |
Only the eu form is irregular: consigo. The past is regular: Eu consegui terminar! I managed to finish!
So one English "can" becomes three verbs:
| Verb | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|
| saber: you learned how | Eu não sei cozinhar. | I can't cook. (I never learned.) |
| poder: it's allowed or possible | Eu não posso cozinhar hoje. | I can't cook today. (I'm busy, or I'm not allowed.) |
| conseguir: you try and succeed | Eu não consigo abrir a porta. | I can't open the door. (I'm trying, and it won't open.) |
- Posso entrar? Can I come in? (permission)
- Você não pode usar o celular aqui. You can't use your phone here. (not allowed)
- Eu não consigo dormir com esse barulho. I can't sleep with this noise. (I try, and I fail)
- Você consegue ler isso? Can you read this? (are you able to make it out?)
The mistake English speakers make is to use poder for everything. Eu não posso entender sounds as if someone has forbidden you to understand. When you're trying and it isn't working, say não consigo: Desculpa, eu não consigo entender.
Words for learning a language
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| a palavra | the word |
| a frase | the sentence |
| a língua | the language |
| o sotaque | the accent |
| o erro | the mistake |
| rápido | fast |
| devagar | slowly |
| O que significa "prazo"? | What does "prazo" mean? |
| Como se diz "deadline" em português? | How do you say "deadline" in Portuguese? |
| Pode repetir, por favor? | Can you repeat that, please? |
| Pode falar mais devagar? | Can you speak more slowly? |
Learn the last four as whole phrases. With não sei, não conheço essa palavra and não consigo entender, they will get you through almost any conversation.
