Day 37 of 90 · about 60 minutes

By the end of today you can:

  • Use me, se and nos with verbs like se levantar, se sentir and se divertir
  • Put the pronoun in the right place, the Brazilian way
  • Say how you feel, what you remember and what you worry about
  • Describe your morning routine in more detail than on day 26

It's Tuesday, and it's still raining. Emma meets Dona Marta in the hallway on her way out, a little too early in the morning.

Listen and read

Listen for the little words me and se right before the verb. Who gets up earlier, Emma or Dona Marta?

Dona Marta Bom dia, Emma! Tudo bem? Como você está se sentindo hoje? Good morning, Emma! All good? How are you feeling today?

Emma Bom dia, Dona Marta. Eu me sinto um pouco cansada. Estou me levantando às cinco e meia esta semana. Good morning, Dona Marta. I feel a little tired. I’m getting up at five thirty this week.

Dona Marta Às cinco e meia? Por quê? At five thirty? Why?

Emma Porque a gente tem um prazo na sexta. Eu me levanto, tomo banho, me visto e saio. Às vezes eu me esqueço de tomar café da manhã. Because we have a deadline on Friday. I get up, shower, get dressed and leave. Sometimes I forget to have breakfast.

Dona Marta Ah, não! Você precisa se sentar e comer. Tenho pão de queijo e café. Oh, no! You need to sit down and eat. I have cheese bread and coffee.

Emma Obrigada! A senhora também se levanta cedo? Thank you! Do you get up early too?

Dona Marta Eu sempre me levanto às seis. Mas eu me deito às nove da noite! I always get up at six. But I go to bed at nine at night!

Emma Ontem eu me deitei à meia-noite. Eu me preocupo muito com o trabalho. Yesterday I went to bed at midnight. I worry a lot about work.

Dona Marta Você se preocupa demais, minha filha. E no fim de semana, você se diverte? You worry too much, my dear. And on the weekend, do you have fun?

Emma Sim! No sábado a gente vai a um show. O Lucas e eu sempre nos divertimos. Yes! On Saturday we’re going to a concert. Lucas and I always have fun.

Dona Marta Que bom. Como se chama a banda? That’s good. What’s the band called?

Emma Não me lembro do nome. Vou perguntar para o Lucas. I don’t remember the name. I’ll ask Lucas.

Dona Marta Você se esqueceu do nome, mas não se esquece do meu pão de queijo, né? You forgot the name, but you don’t forget my cheese bread, do you?

Emma Nunca! Never!

Você entendeu?

  2. Como a Emma se sente hoje?Um pouco cansada. Doente. Muito feliz.
  3. Com o que a Emma se preocupa muito?Com o show. Com o trabalho. Com a chuva.

Me, se, nos: verbs that point back

Some verbs come with a small extra word, a reflexive pronoun, that points back at the person doing the action. English sometimes does this with "myself": "I enjoy myself". Portuguese does it with many more verbs, including ones where English has nothing: Eu me levanto is literally "I get myself up".

There are only three pronouns to learn: me, se and nos.

Portuguese English
eu me levanto I get up
você se levanta you get up
ele se levanta / ela se levanta he gets up / she gets up
a gente se levanta we get up
nós nos levantamos we get up
vocês se levantam you (all) get up
eles se levantam / elas se levantam they get up

The verb itself is conjugated as usual. In the dictionary these verbs are listed with -se on the end (levantar-se), but in Brazil the pronoun goes before the verb when people speak, and that is how this course writes it: se levantar.

Where the pronoun goes:

  • right before the verb: Eu me levanto cedo. I get up early.
  • after não: Eu não me lembro. I don't remember.
  • with two verbs, before the second one: Eu vou me deitar. I'm going to go to bed. Você precisa se sentar. You need to sit down.
  • with estar + -ndo, in the middle: Como você está se sentindo? How are you feeling?

The pronoun follows the person, not the verb. With eu it is always me, even in the infinitive: Eu vou me levantar, never Eu vou se levantar. And remember that a gente takes the ele/ela form, so it takes se: A gente se diverte muito. (A gente nos divertimos is a very common learner mistake.)

Ten verbs to know

Portuguese English
se levantar to get up
se deitar to go to bed, to lie down
se sentar to sit down
se vestir to get dressed
se chamar to be called
se sentir to feel
se divertir to have fun
se lembrar de to remember
se esquecer de to forget
se preocupar com to worry about

Three of these have an eu form that changes e to i. The other forms are regular.

Portuguese English
eu me sinto I feel
eu me visto I get dressed
eu me divirto I have fun
  • Eu me chamo Emma. My name is Emma. (literally "I call myself Emma")
  • Ela se sente bem hoje. She feels well today.
  • Nós nos divertimos muito no Rio. We had a lot of fun in Rio.
  • Você se lembra da Bia? Do you remember Bia?
  • O Lucas não se preocupa com o horário. Lucas doesn't worry about the time.

Lembrar and esquecer take de, and preocupar takes com. As always, de joins the article: do nome, da Bia, dos amigos. Before another verb, use de + infinitive: Eu me esqueci de ligar. I forgot to call.

The past works exactly as you learned last week, with the pronoun in the same place: Ontem eu me deitei tarde. A gente se divertiu muito.

With or without the pronoun, the meaning can change.

  • Eu chamo o Lucas. I call Lucas. / Eu me chamo Lucas. My name is Lucas.
  • Eu sinto frio. I feel cold. (sentir + a thing) / Eu me sinto cansado. I feel tired. (se sentir + how you are)
  • Eu visto uma camisa. I put on a shirt. / Eu me visto. I get dressed.

What Brazilians actually say

In everyday speech, Brazilians often leave the pronoun out with verbs of movement. Both versions are correct, and you'll hear the short one a lot:

Portuguese English
Eu me levanto às seis. / Eu levanto às seis. I get up at six.
Eu me deito tarde. / Eu deito tarde. I go to bed late.
Posso me sentar aqui? / Posso sentar aqui? Can I sit here?

Esquecer is also very common without the pronoun, and then it has no de before a thing: Eu esqueci a chave. means the same as Eu me esqueci da chave.

But se sentir, se chamar, se divertir and se preocupar always keep their pronoun. When you aren't sure, use it: it is never wrong with the ten verbs above.

Nós nos… sounds a little formal. In conversation most people say a gente se… instead: A gente se divertiu muito. is what you'll hear after a good party.

Your morning, in more detail

On day 26 you described your routine with acordar, tomar banho, sair. Now you can add the reflexive verbs:

  • Eu acordo às seis e me levanto às seis e dez. I wake up at six and get up at ten past six.
  • Depois eu tomo banho e me visto. Then I shower and get dressed.
  • Eu me sento na cozinha e tomo café da manhã. I sit down in the kitchen and have breakfast.
  • À noite eu me deito às onze. At night I go to bed at eleven.

Acordar is to wake up (your eyes open); se levantar is to get out of bed.
