Listen and read
Listen once without reading. Every time someone says what is happening right now, you'll hear a form of estar followed by a word ending in -ndo. How many can you count?
Emma Alô, Lucas? Onde você está? A Carol está procurando você. Hello, Lucas? Where are you? Carol is looking for you.
Lucas Estou no ônibus, mas o ônibus não está andando. Está chovendo muito! I’m on the bus, but the bus isn’t moving. It’s raining a lot!
Emma Aqui também. O que você está fazendo? Here too. What are you doing?
Lucas Estou ouvindo música e lendo os e-mails no celular. E vocês? I’m listening to music and reading my emails on my phone. And you two?
Emma Eu estou terminando o desenho do site. A Carol está falando com o cliente no telefone. I’m finishing the design for the website. Carol is talking to the client on the phone.
Lucas Ela está brava? Is she angry?
Emma Não, mas está preocupada. O prazo é sexta-feira e a gente está trabalhando muito esta semana. No, but she’s worried. The deadline is Friday and we’re working a lot this week.
Lucas É verdade. Nossa, que tempo horrível! Aqui faz calor de manhã e chove à tarde. That’s true. Wow, what awful weather! Here it’s hot in the morning and it rains in the afternoon.
Emma Em Toronto está nevando agora. Eu prefiro a chuva! In Toronto it’s snowing now. I prefer the rain!
Lucas Opa, o ônibus está andando de novo! Chego em vinte minutos. Oh, the bus is moving again! I’ll be there in twenty minutes.
Emma Tá bom. Você tem guarda-chuva? OK. Do you have an umbrella?
Lucas Não tenho. Eu sempre esqueço o guarda-chuva em casa. No, I don’t. I always leave my umbrella at home.
Emma Então você vai chegar molhado! Then you’re going to arrive wet!
Você entendeu?
- Onde o Lucas está?Na agência. No ônibus. Em casa.
- O que a Carol está fazendo?Está ouvindo música. Está lendo os e-mails. Está falando com o cliente.
- Como está o tempo em São Paulo?Está chovendo muito. Tem sol. Está nevando.
- Quando é o prazo?Amanhã. Na segunda-feira. Na sexta-feira.

Estar + -ando, -endo, -indo
To say that something is happening right now, English uses "to be" plus a verb in -ing: "I am working". Portuguese does exactly the same thing with estar plus a verb form ending in -ndo. Grammar books call this form the gerund, and the whole thing the present continuous.
To make it, take the -r off the infinitive and add -ndo:
| Infinitive | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|
| falar | falando | speaking |
| comer | comendo | eating |
| abrir | abrindo | opening |
| fazer | fazendo | doing, making |
| ler | lendo | reading |
| ir | indo | going |
There are no surprises here: every verb follows the rule, even the ones that are irregular everywhere else (ser → sendo, ter → tendo, ver → vendo, vir → vindo).
Only estar changes with the person. The -ndo word never changes: it has no masculine, feminine or plural.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu estou trabalhando | I'm working |
| você está trabalhando | you're working |
| ele está / ela está trabalhando | he's / she's working |
| a gente está trabalhando | we're working |
| nós estamos trabalhando | we're working |
| vocês estão trabalhando | you (all) are working |
| eles estão / elas estão trabalhando | they're working |
- O que você está fazendo? What are you doing?
- Eu estou lendo um livro. I'm reading a book.
- A Emma não está dormindo. Emma isn't sleeping.
- Vocês estão entendendo? Are you (all) following?
In speech, estou and está get shorter. You learned tô and tá on day 5, and you'll hear them all the time here: Tô chegando! (I'm almost there!), Tá chovendo. (It's raining.) Write the full forms; say whichever you like.
Now, or usually?
Portuguese draws the same line as English between what is happening now and what happens usually.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Eu estou tomando café. | I'm having coffee. (right now) |
| Eu tomo café todo dia. | I have coffee every day. (a habit) |
| Está chovendo. | It's raining. (look outside) |
| Chove muito em janeiro. | It rains a lot in January. (in general) |
Use estar + -ndo for:
- something happening at this moment: A Carol está falando com o cliente.
- something temporary that is going on these days, even if not at this exact second: A gente está trabalhando muito esta semana.
Use the plain present for habits, facts and things that are always true: O Lucas sempre chega atrasado.
Three places where English "-ing" is not -ndo:
- Future plans. "I'm traveling tomorrow" is Eu vou viajar amanhã., with ir + infinitive (day 19).
- After gostar de and other verbs. "I like reading" is Eu gosto de ler., with the infinitive.
- Wanting, having, knowing. As in English, verbs like querer and ter usually stay in the plain present: Eu quero um café., not "I am wanting".
Words for "now"
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| agora | now |
| neste momento | at the moment, right now |
| hoje | today |
| esta semana | this week |
| este mês | this month |
| hoje em dia | these days, nowadays |
| ainda | still |
| de novo | again |
- Neste momento a Emma está desenhando. At the moment Emma is drawing.
- Ainda está chovendo? Is it still raining?
- Hoje em dia muita gente está trabalhando em casa. These days a lot of people are working at home.
The weather
O tempo means both "time" and "the weather". To ask about the weather, say Como está o tempo?
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Como está o tempo? | What's the weather like? |
| Está chovendo. | It's raining. |
| Está nevando. | It's snowing. |
| Está ventando. | It's windy. |
| Está nublado. | It's cloudy. |
| Está frio. / Faz frio. | It's cold. |
| Está calor. / Faz calor. | It's hot. |
| Tem sol. / Está fazendo sol. | It's sunny. |
| Está fazendo trinta graus. | It's thirty degrees. |
| a chuva | the rain |
| a neve | the snow |
| o vento | the wind |
| o guarda-chuva | the umbrella |
| a previsão do tempo | the weather forecast |
Portuguese has no word for the "it" in "it's raining". The verb stands alone: Chove muito aqui., Nevou ontem.
Está describes the weather today. Faz is common for what the weather is usually like: Faz muito frio em Toronto no inverno. In everyday speech you'll hear both for today, and also está fazendo: Está fazendo calor hoje. Brazil uses Celsius, so trinta graus is a hot day.
The weather is hot; you have heat. Remember estar com fome from day 5? Feeling hot or cold works the same way: Eu estou com calor. (I'm hot.), Você está com frio? (Are you cold?) Don't say Eu estou frio: that means your body is cold to the touch.
