Listen and read
Listen without reading first. You'll hear foi many times. Sometimes it means "went" and sometimes "was". Can you tell which is which?
Bia Oi, gente! Cheguei! Onde vocês foram hoje? Hi, guys! I’m home! Where did you go today?
Lucas De manhã nós fomos ao Pão de Açúcar. In the morning we went to Sugarloaf Mountain.
Bia Que legal! Como foi? How cool! How was it?
Emma Foi lindo! A vista lá de cima é incrível. It was beautiful! The view from up there is incredible.
Bia Vocês foram de ônibus? Did you go by bus?
Lucas Não, fomos de táxi. À tarde a Emma foi à praia de Copacabana, e eu fui ao mercado. No, we went by taxi. In the afternoon Emma went to Copacabana beach, and I went to the market.
Bia Emma, você já esteve no Rio antes? Emma, have you been to Rio before?
Emma Não, é a minha primeira vez. E eu tive sorte: o dia foi perfeito! No, it’s my first time. And I was lucky: the day was perfect!
Lucas Eu estive aqui em janeiro, mas só fiquei um dia. I was here in January, but I only stayed one day.
Emma E você, Bia? Como foi o seu dia? And you, Bia? How was your day?
Bia Foi difícil. Eu tive muito trabalho e não tive tempo para almoçar. It was hard. I had a lot of work and didn’t have time for lunch.
Lucas Então hoje você vai descansar. Eu vou fazer o jantar! Then tonight you’re going to rest. I’m going to make dinner!
Bia Você foi ao mercado e vai cozinhar? Quem é você? You went to the market and you’re going to cook? Who are you?
Emma Hoje ele foi um ótimo guia também! He was a great guide today, too!
Você entendeu?

Ir and ser: one past for two verbs
The verbs ir (to go) and ser (to be) are irregular in the past, but there's a gift: they share exactly the same four forms. Learn them once and you have both verbs.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu fui | I went / I was |
| você foi | you went / you were |
| ele foi / ela foi | he went, he was / she went, she was |
| nós fomos | we went / we were |
| vocês foram | you (all) went / you (all) were |
| eles foram / elas foram | they went / they were |
How do you know which verb it is? Look at what comes next. A place (ao, à, para) or a way of traveling (de táxi, a pé) means "went". A description or a noun means "was".
- Eu fui ao mercado. I went to the market.
- Nós fomos de avião. We went by plane.
- O dia foi perfeito. The day was perfect.
- Ele foi um ótimo guia. He was a great guide.
Fui or foi? One letter separates "I" from "he, she, you": eu fui, ele foi. English speakers mix them up all the time, so drill the pair: Eu fui à praia, e o Lucas foi ao mercado.
To ask "where … go?", careful writing uses aonde or para onde: Para onde vocês foram? In conversation you'll mostly hear plain onde, as Bia says it: Onde vocês foram hoje?
Como foi? Foi ótimo!
The past of ser is how you give your verdict on something that's over: a trip, a day, a meal, a movie, a party.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Como foi a viagem? | How was the trip? |
| Foi ótimo! | It was great! |
| Foi lindo! | It was beautiful! |
| Foi muito legal. | It was really nice. |
| Foi rápido. | It was quick. |
| Foi difícil. | It was hard. |
| Foi chato. | It was boring. |
Foi ótimo! by itself works for anything. When you name the thing, the adjective agrees with it: A viagem foi ótima. O voo foi ótimo. Os passeios foram ótimos.
A limit to know about. Foi sums up an event that is finished. To paint the background of a story in the past ("the hotel was big", "I was tired"), Portuguese uses a second past tense, which starts on day 43. Until then, keep foi for your opinion of something that happened.
Ter and estar in the past
These two are irregular in the same way. In fact the past of estar is the past of ter with es- in front.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu tive | I had |
| você teve, ele teve, ela teve | you had, he had, she had |
| nós tivemos | we had |
| vocês tiveram, eles tiveram, elas tiveram | you (all) had, they had |
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| eu estive | I was |
| você esteve, ele esteve, ela esteve | you were, he was, she was |
| nós estivemos | we were |
| vocês estiveram, eles estiveram, elas estiveram | you (all) were, they were |
Listen for the vowel that separates "I" from "he, she, you": eu tive (TEE-vee), ele teve (TAY-vee).
Ter in the past is for something you had or got at a particular time:
- Eu tive sorte. I was lucky. (Portuguese says "I had luck".)
- Nós tivemos um problema com a mala. We had a problem with the suitcase.
- A Bia teve que trabalhar no sábado. Bia had to work on Saturday.
And since tem is "there is", teve is "there was" for an event: Teve uma festa ontem. There was a party yesterday.
Estar in the past says you were in a place for a time that's now over. With já it asks "have you ever been…?"
- Eu estive no Rio em janeiro. I was in Rio in January.
- Você já esteve no Brasil? Have you ever been to Brazil?
- Eles estiveram aqui ontem. They were here yesterday.
Words for a trip
| Portuguese | English |

| o aeroporto | airport |
| a passagem | ticket (plane, bus) |
| a mala | suitcase |
| o portão | gate |
