Ir: to go
Ir is the shortest verb in Portuguese and one of the most irregular: none of its present forms looks like the infinitive. There are only four, and you'll use them all day long.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| eu vou | EH-oo voh | I go, I'm going |
| você vai | voh-SAY vy | you go, you're going |
| ele vai / ela vai | AY-lee vy / EH-lah vy | he goes / she goes |
| nós vamos | naws VAH-moos | we go, we're going |
| vocês vão | voh-SAYS vowng | you (all) go |
| eles vão / elas vão | AY-lees vowng / EH-lahs vowng | they go |
- Eu vou ao trabalho. I'm going to work.
- A Emma vai ao mercado. Emma is going to the market.
- Nós vamos ao cinema. We're going to the movies.
- Eles vão para o Rio. They're going to Rio.
A gente takes vai, as always: A gente vai ao parque. We're going to the park. And vou covers both "I go" (every day) and "I'm going" (now, or later today).
Going to a place
After ir, the word for "to" is a or para. Both join up with what comes next.
A merges with the article, the way de and em do:
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| ao banco | ow BAHN-koo | to the bank (a + o) |
| à praia | ah PRY-ah | to the beach (a + a) |
| aos parques | ows PAR-kees | to the parks (a + os) |
| às lojas | ahs LAW-zhahs | to the stores (a + as) |
The accent on à only shows in writing that two a's have become one. It sounds like a plain a. You've seen it before in à tarde, à noite and às duas.
Para keeps the article separate in writing (para o centro, para a praia), but in conversation everyone shortens it:
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| pro centro | proo SEN-troo | to downtown (para o centro) |
| pra praia | prah PRY-ah | to the beach (para a praia) |
| pra casa | prah KAH-zah | home (para casa) |
Write para in an email to Carol. Say pra and pro with your friends, and expect to hear them all the time.
Which one? The textbook difference is that a is for a short visit and para is for a place where you'll stay a while: Vou ao banco. (and I'll be right back), Vou para o Canadá. (for a month, or for good). In everyday speech Brazilians don't worry much about it and use para for almost everything. In the exercises today, both are accepted unless the instruction asks for one of them.
- Aonde você vai? Where are you going? (aonde = a + onde, "to where")
- Eu vou para casa. I'm going home. (no article: your own home)
- Eu vou para a casa dos meus pais. I'm going to my parents' house.
You'll also hear em. Many Brazilians say Vou no mercado. or Vou na padaria., with em instead of a. It's very common in conversation and nobody will blink, but it isn't used in careful writing, so learn to say ao and à too.
Places in town, and how you get there
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| o centro | oo SEN-troo | downtown, the city center |
| o parque | oo PAR-kee | park |
| a praça | ah PRAH-sah | square |
| o cinema | oo see-NAY-mah | movie theater |
| o restaurante | oo hes-tow-RAHN-tchee | restaurant |
| o banco | oo BAHN-koo | bank |
| a farmácia | ah far-MAH-see-ah | pharmacy |
| a loja | ah LAW-zhah | store |
| o shopping | oo SHAW-peeng | shopping mall |
| a escola | ah ees-KAW-lah | school |
| o hospital | oo ohs-pee-TOW | hospital |
| a praia | ah PRY-ah | beach |
| o aeroporto | oo ah-eh-roh-POHR-too | airport |
To say how you travel, use de with no article:
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| de ônibus | djee OH-nee-boos | by bus |
| de metrô | djee meh-TROH | by metro |
| de carro | djee KAH-hoo | by car |
| de táxi | djee TAHK-see | by taxi |
| de trem | djee trayng | by train |
| de bicicleta | djee bee-see-KLEH-tah | by bike |
| de avião | djee ah-vee-OWNG | by plane |
| a pé | ah peh | on foot |
- Como você vai para o trabalho? How do you get to work?
- Eu vou de ônibus. I go by bus.
- A gente vai a pé. We walk. (literally "we go on foot")
One exception: every kind of transport takes de, but "on foot" is a pé. And where English says "I walk to work", Brazilians usually say Eu vou a pé para o trabalho.
Going to do something
Here is your first future, and it works just like English "going to": a form of ir, then the other verb in the infinitive, with nothing in between.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Eu vou viajar. | EH-oo voh vee-ah-ZHAR | I'm going to travel. |
| Você vai gostar. | voh-SAY vy gohs-TAR | You're going to like it. |
| Nós vamos comer. | naws VAH-moos koh-MEHR | We're going to eat. |
| Eles vão chegar às oito. | AY-lees vowng sheh-GAR ahs OY-too | They're going to arrive at eight. |
- Amanhã eu vou trabalhar em casa. Tomorrow I'm going to work from home.
- A minha mãe vai cozinhar. My mom is going to cook.
- Eu não vou chegar atrasado. I'm not going to be late.
- O que você vai comer? What are you going to eat?
This is the future Brazilians use in conversation nearly all the time, so it also covers English "will": Você vai gostar! You'll like it! Useful words to go with it: amanhã (tomorrow), hoje à noite (tonight), no sábado (on Saturday).
The mistakes English speakers make:
- Changing the second verb. Only ir changes: Eu vou comprar, never eu vou compro.
- Adding a word for "to". English says "going to buy"; Portuguese says vou comprar, with nothing in between.
- Saying vou ir for "I'm going to go". You'll hear it sometimes, but most people just say vou: Amanhã eu vou à praia. Tomorrow I'm going (to go) to the beach.
Vamos has one more job. On its own, or before an infinitive, it means "let's":
- Vamos! Let's go!
- Vamos comer! Let's eat!
- Vamos ao cinema? Shall we go to the movies?
- Vamos? Shall we? — Vamos! Let's!
