Good to know

  • Spelling: the c becomes qu before e to keep the hard sound: eu tranquei, tranque, tranquem.
  • Fechar or trancar? Fechar is just to close; trancar is to lock, with a key or a bolt: Fechei a porta, mas não tranquei. (I closed the door, but I didn't lock it.)
  • Trancar a faculdade (or trancar a matrícula) means to put your studies on hold for a while: Ele trancou a faculdade para trabalhar. (He put college on hold to work.)
  • Trancar-se is to lock yourself in: Ela se trancou no banheiro. (She locked herself in the bathroom.)
