Good to know

  • A tampa is the lid or cap, and tampar is to put it on: Tampe a panela. (Put the lid on the pot.) The opposite is destampar.
  • Tampar or tapar? Tapar means to cover or block something in general. In everyday Brazilian speech the two are mixed freely, so you'll hear both tampar o nariz and tapar o nariz (to hold your nose).
  • Tampar um buraco means to cover or fill a hole: Eles tamparam o buraco da rua. (They filled the hole in the street.)
