Good to know

  • Evitar + infinitive, with no preposition: Evito dirigir à noite. (I avoid driving at night.) English uses "-ing"; Portuguese uses the infinitive.
  • Evitar que takes the subjunctive and means "to prevent": Feche a janela para evitar que entre água. (Close the window to keep water from coming in.)
  • You'll see it on signs and labels: Evite acidentes. (Avoid accidents.) Evite o desperdício. (Avoid waste.)
  • Não consegui evitar. means "I couldn't help it." Something that can't be avoided is inevitável.
