Good to know

  • Sofrer de or sofrer com? Use sofrer de for an illness or a lasting condition and sofrer com for what causes the suffering: Ele sofre de asma. (He suffers from asthma.) Eu sofro com o calor. (I suffer in the heat.)
  • Sofrer um acidente is the usual way to say "to have an accident": Ela sofreu um acidente de moto. (She had a motorcycle accident.)
  • It also means "to undergo": O horário sofreu uma mudança. (The schedule underwent a change.)
