Good to know

  • Who roars? Lions, tigers and jaguars, and also engines, crowds and the sea: O motor rugiu. (The engine roared.) The noun is rugido: o rugido do leão (the lion's roar).
  • Spelling: the g becomes j before o and a: eu rujo, que ele ruja. You'll rarely need these forms.
  • A hungry stomach doesn't roar in Portuguese. It snores: Minha barriga está roncando. (My stomach is growling.)
