Good to know

  • Two uses: physically moving back, and backing down from a decision or a fight: Ele não recua nunca. (He never backs down.)
  • The opposite is avançar (to move forward).
  • In soccer, recuar a bola is to pass the ball back, and a team that recua drops back to defend.
  • The u is always pronounced, as its own syllable: eu recuo, ele recua, que ele recue.
